WCG Quake 4 Preview (158 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 09:14 UTC, 28 August 2006 - iMsg
The World Cyber Games welcomes Quake back into its arms this year, however it didn't have time to get the game into the qualifiers. The next best thing is a community led decision as to who goes to the Grand Finals in Monza, Italy in October.

That is where YOU come in.

To help you decide which of the eight players you think should attend, we have compiled a small dossier on each of the 20 players in the vote. Some you will no doubt heard about before, indeed you may even have decided before you read who you think should go, however we would urge you to read through, even if it is just to look through each players achievement, which are all listed since Quake 4 was released late last year.

There is one thing to bear in mind and I am sure you will spot it early, however with such limited time and a sizeable set of player's to review, the preview was written before the Kode 5 finals. The news report and finishing order of that event are also here on ESR.

Vote for your WCG2006 Quake4 All Stars

ESR Interviews arQon (626 comments)
Posted by Demiurge @ 18:04 UTC, 14 August 2006 - iMsg
As most of you know the past few weeks have been very controversial for everyone on the border between the competitive gaming world and the Quake gaming community. In the middle of it all there is an impartial entity reaching down into your game fusing the overtures of the fragmentary code fragments.....err. Anyway, here's a sample of the interview with the man behind the very popular competitive mods, CPMA and Q4Max.
Do you consider CPMA VQ3 physics still an open question in light of the recent vows from some members of the OSP community?

No, and I never have. Do you really think I should make decisions based on the mewling of a handful of clueless halfwits just because they spam ESR with the same post a hundred times? If I did, what would happen when the next two handfuls both wanted something that conflicted with each other?
In it he talks about Quake3, Quake4, tells us what is happening with CPMA and sheds light on many confusing (for some) subjects.

You might also be interested in our older interview with him.

QPAD CT Review (46 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 15:11 UTC, 5 June 2006 - iMsg
If, like me, you love mousepads that have cloth rather than plastic, metal, glass or even wood, then you might well be interested in the CT pad, recently released by Swedish manufacturers QPAD.

The Swedes seem to be building on their long standing relationship with gamers around the world and I cant remember attending a major tournament where I have not seen these pads being used and abused by the top players. Released in March this year, the CT pad is the replacement for the older gamer series of pads and looks to enhance precision and feel even further, so let’s put it to the test.

ESR Exclusive - Thresh Interview (233 comments)
Posted by scoop @ 03:20 UTC, 4 February 2006 - iMsg
He is without a doubt the first real legend since online gaming started. Dennis "Thresh" Fong influenced the electronic sport more than almost every other player in the world. He was the first real "pro-gamer" and even after years of retirement, he is one of the biggest stars in the Quake and eSports scene. Not only as a gamer, but as a businessman aswell he started making real money with competitive gaming long before clans were sponsored and Fatal1ty sold his first mousepad.
I had the chance to talk with Dennis about his gaming career, his experiences with other players aswell as his views on eSports as it is today and of course his Ferrari.

Here is a snippet:
Is it true, that id Software came up to you and asked for your input when developing Quake 3?

Yes, I helped with the multiplayer aspects of Quake 2 and Quake 3. In fact, as a way to thank me for my input on Quake 2, John Carmack built my config into the game. You can type “Exec thresh.cfg” on any Quake 2 machine and it would work. :)
Check out the full interview and learn what Thresh thinks about who should be the real CPL World Tour champion...

The Quake Tournament History Timeline (297 comments)
Posted by niceguy @ 00:50 UTC, 12 December 2005 - iMsg
I've made a Quake Tournament History Timeline. I've included every significant Doom2, Quake, Quakeworld, Quake 2, and Quake 3 tournament that I could find information about. Information in the timeline includes tournament results, winnings, dates, locations, notes, and website links.

If you have any suggestions for changing or adding to the list, please I'm me, add a comment, or email me at [email protected]. I appreciate any suggestions, because this is a very long and complicated list, and I'm sure that there are many important things that have been left out.

Being a Pro Gamer 3: Mouse Pads for 2005 (52 comments)
Posted by [deleted] @ 13:03 UTC, 3 September 2005 - iMsg
It's been a while since the last article in the "Being a Pro Gamer" series. Almost three years to be exact. In the meantime a lot has happened, and the ever-changing gaming equipment market grew and expanded considerably. Some of the equipment that I described back then has become outdated so I decided to make a new article about the current state in the industry. This article will be about mouse pads that appeared in the meantime. It wouldn’t be possible without our friends at IndiWEB to whom we are grateful for providing all the mouse pads tested in this review.

Now, onto the pads!

Wanted to help you people out who are interested in vq3 mode of CPMA. Most of you will see and feel that there are a lot of differences in CPMA compared to OSP.

Here's a small guide to make the change in your config a bit easier.

Pickup: 2005 Edition (80 comments)
Posted by amarc @ 22:15 UTC, 30 March 2005 - iMsg
Pickup (sometimes called gather) channels are places where gamers meet to play more organised games together away from the hassle of public servers, usually using league/competition settings and tactics that would normally be found in clan matches. Over the years the number & variety of pickup channels available has increased considerably, from small beginnings when the concept was mainly used for Quake up to the present day where gamers of practically any discipline can find a channel where they can enjoy serious, competitive play. Although rules & practices differ from channel to channel, they're generally free from the dregs of online gaming - aliasers, newbies, cheats & exploiters. Channels are mostly run by volunteer individuals for the benefit of their scene, though some are run by gather organisations, hosting companies or clans. All channels covered in this guide are on the QuakeNet IRC network & some require you to auth with the network's Q service bot to join (channel mode +r), see this page for details on how to do so if you're unfamiliar with the procedure. Here's the 2005 rundown of popular & active pickup channels sorted by game, gametype & region.

[/hide]
This list has been made as conclusive & accurate as possible, however if there are any errors, omissions or an update needed please inform me so that this can be the definitive list.

Many thanks to james, whose original concept I've updated.

QuadQuakers, The History (35 comments)
Posted by Marius`` @ 11:34 UTC, 30 March 2004 - iMsg
July 1st, 1999: *Sound of baby crying*: Or around that time, 3 people decided to form a Netquake team, they dubbed it QuadQuakers..
These people named Shadow(USA), Bludgener(USA) and Björn(Holland) started a team that lives until now, one of the older teams still around.
Let's look at what happened shall we..

June 1st 2000: Blastoff: The first recorded match, we may have had some matches before that, but this is the first on the match page, QQ got their asses handed to them by clan Neptune, but the match report promises that it will get better, haw haw :P.

October 4th 2001: Megawar: A tradition was started, having 3/4 teams at the same time play 2v2v2v2, a nice initiative, 4 of those were eventually held, with QQ winning 2 I think :) wp gg lads :D

January 24th 2002: Quake 3 Arena, TDM: Yes you've read it right, the true calling of clan QuadQuakers took a hold of us that day, with our very first Quake 3 team game.
QuadQuakers vs Team Fire, lineup: Cr0zz, Geds, Mop and Systemkrash got beaten by ONE frag on pro-q3dm6, 126-127 (losing close games is a QQ tradition we've kept in honour until this very day), and getting beaten 77-117 on q3dm7, But it was a nice start for our first team game :)

A while after our start at Quake 3 we got accepted in the barrysworld TDM league, division 5.
I'll leave the dates from here on.

Not having too good a start to the league, we didnt really have high hopes on winning anything that season, but it turned out differently.
The breaking moment in the season was our greatest result ever, with us taking our first ever, and only map off No Visible Remorse.

We got promoted, Division 4, here we come!

May 2nd 2002: Yours truly vs QQ: At that time I was captain of a small and rather unsuccessfull TDM clan called Intoxicated Flesh (hello lads!), looking for practice games we stumbled into QQ, and decided we'd give them a go.

QQ Lineup: Cr0zz, Geds, Mop, Psyco(Zion Merc), Dan-_- (over 2 maps)
IxF Lineup: Kikster, R3wd, LaZyDoG, Kikster, Lunx (over 2 maps).

We got well beaten, but yet had a fun time vs QQ, and from that moment on I was furniture in their channel :)

After that QQ took up freezetag, we played one season in the BWFT league, which turned out shite cuz we got placed in a division about 372371371237123 times our strength!
But, FT would certainly later prove to be a big influence for us, more on that when it matters :)

July 2nd 2002: IxF vs QQ, the last IxF game ever: This was supposed to be just a practice game, and it was..Apart from the fact my little child IxF folded soon after this game, which was a shame..and left me clanless.
A good game none the less :)

July 11th 2002: QuadQuakers goes CTF, The legacy begins!: QuadQuakers starts off with CTF, our first game vs Clan UK is a fact, and a win right away, happy joy!

In the mean time, yours truly had joined the friendly lads over at Clan Zion, nowadays known for the great movie, and we played QuadQuakers in the BW TDM league, and basically kicked their asses, which was nice :D
Still, after some time Zion fell apart, and I was yet again orphaned :(

November 5th 2002: Yours truly (DeXteR) Makes his debut: After skillfully bluffing my way into QuadQuakers and lying about my skills I was finally accepted to join their ranks, my official QQ tagged debut was a fact vs Unknown Quantity or uQu as they call themselves, from this moment on I called #quadquakers on quakenet my home \o/

This was one of our strongest periods in the QQ History, Our clanlist in this period and a bit after sported big names such as: aRnz, KaZ, Para, Viol, Beetle and the rest of the gang was basically hidden behind these, we went on to win Barrysworld division 4a TDM and nearly promote from CTF division 3, things were looking good until 'The Icelandic Connection' was cut, and Para, KaZ and Arnz left us :(

Next TDM season was one big defeat, without our top class players we got blown out of the water, and quickly routed to the bottom of the division and back down to division 4, after which we played 2 more seasons of BW TDM division 5, and quit TDM shortly after

February 19th 2003: Freezetag CB division 2, go!:
This was the kickoff to our finest season ever in any league, we won 2-1 in maps vs ERZ, the map we lost vs ERZ was the only we lost in this division, and we went on to beat Clan Dirty Rotten Imbeciles in the final by 3-0, wp by us.
A short while later we also won BW division 3 freezetag, and quit this mod forgood soon after :)

June 9th 2003: Cloud 9 Connected, The American friendship: A tradition started this day as Mark (cl0ck) Joined QuadQuakers to play some european leagues for us besides his regular schedule for Cloud 9, doing quite well indeed, He didnt stay for long, only 6 months or so, but he sure made an impression on how we play CTF today :)

This is the last piece of QuadQuakers history, At this moment we are active in Jolt and Clanbase Q3 CTF leagues, we have members from 7 different countries.

From Poland there's Martin aka Metoda
From Sweden there's Chris aka Manglarn
From Holland there are: Björn aka Björn, Marius aka DeXteR and Ruben aka Jehuty
From the USA there's Bryan aka Dynomite
From England there are: Richard aka Quicksilver, Michael aka Tapley, Ollie aka Breeze, Andrew aka Light and Matt aka Monk
From Scotland we have Chris aka Nikon
And last, but certainly not least from Germany, Mathias aka muRdoc

This is our current team.

Finally I'd like to thank some of our influential members from the past, some of which i've had the pleasure of playing with, others I know only from the site, big props to:

Bludgener, Shadow and Magnum for starting things up :)

From England I'd like to thank: Katteh, Beetle, Mop, LiFe, Morphy, Ballast, Alienated and cr0ssfire
From Iceland I'd like to thank: Para, KaZ, aRnz and Reyn1r
From the USA I'd like to thank: cl0ck

Also a big shoutout to all the clans we've played in the past, you know who you are!!!

Peace!

CXG: Behind closed doors (by cl0ck) (251 comments)
Posted by cl0ck @ 15:44 UTC, 12 January 2004 - iMsg
High hopes and aspirations for potentially one of the best tournaments of our time were floating in the air of a small apartment in Boston, Massachusetts where I and cha0ticz prepared for the Cyber X-Games.

How wrong we were…

Game after game we played, practicing hard, playing the maps we haven’t played in so long with admiration to soar to the top of the event we were about to attend. Our games were on; we were playing really good, close games on all maps with full strategic knowledge banks.

But would this help us any at CXG? Nope, infact we should have been practicing playing on 3-4 hours sleep at 8am in the morning rather then the maps themselves.

Read on to see how the days progressed.

Please note this guide was originally tailored for 1.1 and since the newer release has changed some of the gameplay ideas of it, not everything will be relevant anymore.
