He had everything going for him at the start of the year, with good placings at CPL Winter and Dreamhack Winter behind him, a successful career in Quake 3 and a newly inked contract with the Free Players Organisation in his pocket. How then, did Fox fail to win a single Quake 4 event so far?

There have been some good tournaments for Magnus this year, but there was also the farcical Quakecon incident where he was sent home having arrived in the USA without the right paperwork. How can a team or organisation let a player down so badly? Isnt this exactly the kind of thing they should be looking after for him? Or was it just American bureaucracy gone mad? We may never know, but we he was deprived of a chance to shine at Quakecon.

It all started brightly enough at Dreamhack Winter in 2005, where only a 7am final stopped him from outright victory and a 3rd place in the highly competitive field at CPL winter. After that however, things haven’t gone as well as I am sure he or the FPO would have hoped.

He did find time to claim the Rendezvous lan in late December 2005, but that is his only credited tournament victory in Quake 4 so far and with all due respect, it is hardly a major tournament on the gaming calendar.

He was 6th at Intel Summer, failed to qualify for the ESWC finals (having lost out to OoZe and fooki) and was third again at WSVG Dreamhack (again behind both Toxic and Cooller).

Its not like it’s a terrible set of results of course, but his early form and play style in Quake 4 promised so much more, perhaps one of the reasons why the FPO picked him up in the first place.

He does however remain one of the friendliest players in the business, but he knows that won’t win him a tournament any time soon. He has the aim, he has the brain (despite what Cooller might tell you) but somehow he needs to just change up another gear and claim a tournament for himself. There are a lot of players around him who HAVE won something this year and then there are loads more just behind him who are knocking rather hard on the door, so fojji has to be careful or he will be swallowed up and spat out by the ever growing hoard of young stars.

If there is one thing Fox does have, its resilience and despite the setbacks he has had, he will be philosophical and move on from them, learn and get better. Let’s not forget, he has all the credentials, the history, the support and an organisation of players (Stermy and Fatal1ty) to practice with, of the highest calibre. There is NO reason why Fox cannot win a major tournament in Quake 4.

He has to compete with Four other Swedes (as well as another 15 talented players) in this vote for just 8 players to attend WCG, so it’s a tough ask considering his form of late, but maybe he has already done enough in the past? Either way, you decide.
