Monsters of War is a 2D sky camera view game, but it rotates like a FPS'er. Twin-Sticks "TWISTED"

In other words it's a pathetic version of Zelda/Diablo, but has the rotation system of FPS'ers, which if you've been playing FPS'ers for a while, you probably prefer that movement/aiming/attacking system over Zelda/Diablo/Alien Swarm.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare coming to Ste (No comments)

Torn Banner Studios, makers of Age of Chivalry, a free game modification on Valve's Source engine(Half-Life 2), is set to release Chivalry: Medieval Warfare this month on the 16th. Chivalry uses Epic Games' Unreal Development Kit and looks stunning.

There really isn't much to say, as far as I'm concerned, this is the only game that matters.

Defense of the AdvertisementZ: Free to Watch and Money for the Players

While I don't really see DotA II being free, I think being free to watch should be and feel it would be a major community boost.

Two of the biggest problems with E-SportZ(Video games played for money) is gaining a userbase to play and then gaining a userbase to watch the game. Often times the best way to watch a game is right in the game itself. E-SportZ has a very large market and is highly untapped by almost all developers.

Current game or demo watching will also increase the amount of movies made, which has a massive userbase and following.

AdvertisementZ are highly untapped by the gaming industry and for ads to work you normally want as many eyes as possible. The only way ads will work for Valve and not YouTube or any other company is by forcing you to watch from the game.

The next biggest step in the history of gaming and E-SportZ would be to allow the gamers themselves to make money. Imagine your favorite player, IceIYIaN or GabeN or whoevever, to gain 1-5% of the profit from these ads. So, for example it's me(blue) vs GabeN(red). His team has red ads and mine blue ads. However Valve wants to do it really, but I'm hoping they at least look into it.

Finally, allowing modifications to make money via ads would hopefully allow their creators to "Enter Commerce". Under United States law you have no right to a trademark unless you enter commerce. This is why myself, who's worked on something for eight years lost everything. My name, my community, my future. Sure, I have all my useless copyrights, but the trademark is lost forever. A major part of any business.

Valve announces DotA II (Defense of the (2 comments)

DotA is a free mod based off of WarCraft III. Guess this means it's gonna be some kind of third person sky camera game, like Alien Swarm(Valve's free sky camera game).

The Elements of War camera system, available in ALL Source/Gold Source games/mods is perfect for a sky camera game. Unlike Zelda/Nox/Diablo/Alien Swarm and any of the others, my system allows the player to always look to the north of the screen. When you turn left or right, the screen rotates clockwise or counter-clockwise with you. Making it the perfect upgrade to any FPS'er player looking to play a sky camera game.

ASDF "Touch Typing"
(or JKL; for left handers)
A = Back
S = Forwards
D = Strafe Left
F = Strafe Right
Space = Duck
Right Click = Jump

Reasons for picking ASDF over say, WASD, ESDF, QWES, control sticks, or anything else:
1. ASDF Touch Typing has been around for YEARS. Long before computers.
2. ASDF Touch Typing is tought in countless schools, almost everyone knows it.
3. ASDF Touch Typing grants you nearly unlimited hotkeys
4. QWERT/ZXCVB is insanly easy to grasp/access and highly n00b friendly (12345/678910)
5. You will never have to move your left hand(or right if you use JKL; )
6. ASDF "HULK SMASH" - Press all four buttons at once, just a different method for "stopping". Not quite as useful, depends on the game engine.

7. Your pinky is your weakest finger and since you rarely move backwards in video games, this grants you extra hotkeys over WASD.
8. Running forward is almost always used. With using your second weakest finger, this allows all other fingers to use other hotkeys while still running forward.
9. DF for strafing is super easy because you're using your most powerful fingers. You don't have that odd feeling of strafing left with WASD

10. If you're using a control stick, you're unable to do important First Person moves. Dodging, strafe jumping, and beyond
11. If you're using a control to move, you probably do it to aim too. Unless you controller/mouse... Mouse >>> Control sticks EVERYTIME. I'm sorry, this is simply a fact. Way more control, faster and accurate. You will be defeated in non-slow/auto aiming games.

What hotkeys are most available/powerful while using ASDF?
ERT / Secondary/Primary/Melee
45 / Other weapons / Nades
Z / Useful for "Show Scores", as you can run forward and see how many enemies are still alive(Counter-Strike)

What do you consider cons of using ASDF?
I consider A=Backwards a small con, as it can be difficult to move backwards until you fully grasp ASDF, which takes a bit of time. Even then, it can be still difficult. Also, Shift(Walk/Run) and A(Backwards) can be difficult.

I got a strange message from Steam today, telling me I bought a game and could then give a gift or something like that(I don't remember I rushed through the news). Sadly the game didn't appear and I couldn't gift it, however, it brought up the gift page and it seems whoever I gave Half-Life 2 and Half-Life: Opposing Force to never accepted. I know OF is to my cousin and the other person I don't have the slightest idea.

ChiLL NighT is a massive warblade wielded by Belinda Frostmourne. Commander of the most powerful army on the planet. Fearing for the safety of their niece, as they lost their daughter Zelda long ago hearing the same stories thought once as myth, but knowing now that these monters are real and must be put an end to, they send Belinda on the quest.

Word has spread that giant crystals are falling from the sky smashing the planet. Devouring humans and changing them into demons. Once changed, those monters are attracted to the crystals. With this information Belinda and her army marches in the direction of the falling crystals. Along the path they encounter crystalkin or dragonkin. The name given for how they appear. Like humans, but don't wield any weapons or wear armor. Powerful, but killable.

Eventually they cross paths with Curtis Turner <Death>. Being one of the first few crystalkin and in dragonform for quite some time, he is a lot larger than normal and far more formidable. The army fought, unleashing everything they had, chipping away at Death piece by piece. However, one by one the army quickly fell to the ground. At this point much of the army lay dying or dead, with a number fleeing from battle. Only Belinda and her best warriors stand with her. As an ooze like substance and crystals are leaking from this monster, she thinks he is finished. Fearless, she raises her warblade skyward and charges.

Far more powerful than she could possibly imagine, the entire army is slaughtered and only she remains. Not to give up, she lunges one last time at Death, smashing her warblade into his neck. Deep, almost reaching his human body, as he stumbles to the ground. Belinda drops to her knees, exhausted from battle, mind shaken from the horror witnessed. She begins to shed tears, as the overflow of constant battle over the years has caught up to her. Finally opening her eyes to reveal that he isn't dead. Instead, standing tall, ripping the sword from himself.

Her foolish act of compassion and sadness for past mistakes on this very battlefield will finally be the death of her. Knowing this to be the end, she spreads her arms, bows her head, and says, "You are truely a great warrior!"

However, deep in the background is none other than Morgan Black <Life>. Chillin, relaxing under a tree the entire time. She had been keeping track of Death for a while now and was amazed an entire army appeared to attempt killing him. She was more amazed by the fact that he survived. Debating what to do during the battle, she finally decided. Perhaps too late, but worth a shot, she screamed with the loudest of her lungs something Curtis would do. An odd sounding noise, but surely he would know it or at least look in her direction.

About to raise his new blade, now dripping with ooze and crystals, forming around the blade gripping it as if the object was flesh, instead he twists his face and eyes. Gazing at Morgan from afar. Intervened, he steps towards her.

"ChillNight...", Morgan said at last. As he wielded it. Gripped tightly, anger flowing. She stopped herself from further thought. "How at once the hunter, I've now become the hunted."

12 Months(Two Years) with Valve Corp. (9 comments)

I E-Mail'ed our boy Gabe. I told him he'd have to tell me his plan over "the next 12 months" or I'd stop developing Elements of War for the Source engine. In his best interest, he spilled the beans!

Just playing. :d Instead, I'mma go ahead and ponder about what's going to happen at Valve or what I think should happen.

1. Localization:
100% free, Valve should create something for Steam that allows users to learn English. Among other languages. Including sign language, cause they did hire those one people after all, right? With every hot chick in the world speaking the only language I know, well, you get the idea. Valve's own Source engine is pretty much English I assume, giving them a greater developer pool. Pirates don't always speak English. Just ask Russians, Gabe did. With education values present, schools would be more willing to install Steam. Valve brings a greater world peace, as more people are talking to each other. Finally, as Blizzard would say, "The battle against spelling continues!" Although I could care less and use Google to spell :D

2. Musicalization:
Music should be one of Valve's top goals. Unlike books, movies, whatever, music can be used while playing video games. I'm sure you've heard these n00bZ before, "I hate video games, go away. oh, I like music... Wait, video game music? I don't compute." Being able to pick your music while in the game and bringing in millions of users who don't play video games is simply a no-brainer.

Did I mention MySpace/YouTube/Whatever is totally ripping off all video game music and doesn't give one penny to Valve or any of you? Ever heard video game music? That's some sweet tunes!

3. Movies, books, whatever:
See above. oh yeah, while everyone else is making a Gaming Platform, Valve beats everyone to the next jump: The service of be all end all.

4. Valve will control your destiny:
What's one of the most common questions asked all over the InterwebZ about video games? How do I use a controller? It was asked so much, I added it in my own mod:

WindowZ XP/Vista/7/8910 allow users to hook up their X-BoX 360 Controller to their computer. Among other X-BoX related devices. Not everybody knows this or can figure out how to use it.

When Valve makes a controller(We know they're doing something), it'll come with the install for Steam. Plus, who has a crappy keyboard and mouse? Who wants a great one handed keyboard/controller thing?

5. Valve is in a battle with Blizzard:
If anyone besides say, Microsoft bringing Halo: Reach and beyond to Games for WindowZ(Same day platform), it's none other than Blizzard's Battle.net that poses the most threat to Steam. (Desura.net aka ModDB.com coming in just behind IMO).
They gotta stop World of WarCraft, StarCraft, and Diablo. I think Alien Swarm was a direct hit to not only the UDK(Epic), but StarCraft and Diablo. As we all know, Valve's next big IP isn't going to be First Person. That just doesn't seem like a good option at all. Instead, I think they'll go with three major views/controls:
Diablo / Zelda / Alien Swarm

Or some other type, such as World of WarCraft

Picking the Elements of War style camera or WoW's makes perfect sense. A crap load of skill and just makes D/Z/AS n00biE and boring. Besides, it's a perfect evolution from the First Person View. Not only that, but Elements of War has been in Gold Source since Valve added the few commands to make the view and they created the rest with Alien Swarm.

Finally, what happens when you visit your friend's MySpace/FaceBooK? Bet you'll find a lot of World of WarCraft photos. Why's that? It's all in that armor! Look maw, I gotz new helmetz!!!111

6. Females, the 50% no-brainer:
World of WarCraft is whiping the floor with your game, how do they have such sales compared to everyone else? Not only did they create one of the most epic games in our time, but they also filled the world with women. What does every gamer guy really want? A super hot freaking blood elf gamer chick. DOH! They say we evolved thanks to women. All that chit chat while we went out hunting or fielding the crops. What's the next big evolution? Let's all hunt and chit chat together. Think of all the super powered brains!

7. E-SportZ:
Put some form of Steam TV(aka HLTV) when you load Steam or SteamPowered.com and all of a sudden E-SportZ hits the majors. Counter-Strike, World of WarCraft, StarCraft, Halo, Call of Duty, Street Fighter, you name some of the biggest games of today and what do they all have in common? Multi-Player and nearly every one of them can be played for insane amounts of cash. Fatal1ty.com

8: That one dude from that one event that had tattoos of ads, shirts with ads, advertisements EVERYWHERE ON EVERYTHING. Ads ads adS!
Ads have been around for quite a long time now, seems missing in action from video games. What's up with that? Valve already has Counter-Strike pumping out the ads(Last I played forever ago). SuperBowL ads anyone? Holy poopie think of the money! We could even put them in modifications! You might even be able to cut the price of your game down to ZERO! Whoah!

9: The PC retail strikes back!
When's the last time you *bought a game from a game store(If you play pc only and found Steam)? No counting WoW game cards either. I wouldn't even consider it, unless it came with a Steam version. With controllers and the boxes, Valve could invade retail and put their Steam service ahead of the others. Sometimes having that DVD is really helpful...

First, I'd just like to state I use ASDF (Back/Forward/Strafe Left/Strafe Right) and right click to jump, spacebar to duck.

How much control does a client(Player) or server(Host) have over the players physics in your game? If you(Developer) have complete control, why? Allowing settings that the server controls brings greater joy to everyone involved.

Before you start, know what type of view you'll be using and the controls to go along with it. FPS'er, Sky View(Classic Zelda, Diablo, Alien Swarm, or Elements of War( http://www.moddb.com/mods/elements-of-war/vid...era-system )), Side View, whatever.

Next step is to determine what type of input methods players will have available. Mouse/Keyboard, xController, whatever.

I'd like to state that hitboxes, sounds, weapons, and other factors will come into play.


Walking
Walking allows players to stealth(aka no footsteps). This allows for less spam attacks at times. The players has more control, as they're moving slower.

Normal Movement(Jogging)

Running/Sprinting:
This allows the player to run at max speed, perhaps causing louder footsteps. Some games won't allow attacking, some games have stamina systems. The reason I'm not into running/sprinting is because a player is forced to use this hotkey. While walking isn't used as much.

Forward Strafing: (Golden Eye / Perfect Dark)
This was a move that allowed you to move faster than running straight, which doesn't make sense. I could be wrong, I haven't played either games in a long time.

Backwards/Forwards/Move Left/Move Right Speeds:
Sometimes a slight move backwards and left/right speed reduction is ok. 5/25%, but let's not push it too far...

Jump
Does a player make a sound when jumping or landing? How much of a distance causes the sound?

Duck

JumpDuck/DuckJump (Valve - Source Engine - Half-Life/2)
This move is ducking in the air after jumping. It allows you to jump higher. A few issues come into play with this: I use right click as jump and space to duck, aka easy. Others use space as jump and ctrl as duck, aka hard. PS: ASDF > WASD :d


This move probably causes hitbox issues along with animation issues. Also noting that depending on how you code it, jumping or ducking first may grant a higher jump.


Bunny-Hopping
Simply jumping, over and over. Some games try to nerf this, by slowing you down after each jump or crushing your stamina, and giving you insane recoil. The biggest complaint is that it's highly unrealistic. On the other side of the coin, it's one of gaming's most popular moves (Super Mario). Think about that.

Speed Jumping
Same as bunny-hopping, except you gain speed.

Dodge (Unreal Tournament)
Not as high as a jump, but faster and usually you'll leap in that direction. Unreal uses the double tap system(There was a post on Gamasutra about the double tap, being bad for control sticks).
Skilled players usually run forward, turn right, double tap left, turn in air.
Other games you hold a button down and then press the direction.

Wall Dodge
Same as above, except you dodge off of a wall

High Jump (Super Mario / Halo)
Who needs to DuckJump when you jump HIGH?

Double Jump (Unreal Tournament)
Counter to the DuckJump, as you press jump jump. Easier than jump then duck. Not very realistic, but many side view video games can use it without worry.

Air Control:
Movement based (Unreal Tournament)
Moving right will have you curve to the right while in the air.

Aiming Based (PainKiller)
Aiming/Turning in a direction will have you curve while in the air.

"The Strafe Jump" (Quake I, all Valve titles, the untold secret move keeping Valve at the top)
What is strafe jumping? It's not an easy move. Run forward, jump, while in the air, let go of forward, turn left or right and move left or right at the same time. If you've done the move correctly, you curved in the air and you'll also be moving faster.

In Valve games I like sv_airaccelerate 999, which makes it whatever Valve has as the max value(Unknown).


It's hard to explain why this move is so powerful. It's difficult, meaning n00bZ won't be able to do it over and over. It just feels great. Once you've done it for a long period of time, as millions of Valve gamers have, when you go to other movement based systems they just feel bland. At least IMO. The speed gain is also amusing (:


Foward Roll (Zelda)

Not to be confused with jump height. This is how fast you fall and how much damage you take. Falling damage gives melee a heavy disadvantage and lessens your ability to do crazy moves if the time is right for such a move.

Does this command exsist? id nerfed this with Quake II and it's been dog shit ever since. This is the biggest reason I, along with countless others, stick with Valve's Gold Source/Source engine.

Even Valve has the setting rather low(5/10?), I like 999(It defaults to the highest setting, unknown atm). They've got it locked, but their highest setting is fine for me (:

This confused me for the longest time, but after looking at the code it all makes sense now.

m_pitch is linked to sv_cheats 1.

With cheats off, you're only allowed a value of .022 or -.022 and IF you set m_pitch to 0 then it'll always go to -.022

Two major reasons this needs to be cut from cheats:
1. Players aren't allowed their own pitch value(See: Quake community)
2. This really hurts my camera system.

If you know how to fix this, plz post.

Theme:

EoW theme for those who didn't know:
Crystals fall from the sky turning humans into creatures of two different colors(Perhaps more later, but let's keep it simple for now). The colors hate each other and well, war.

Now, I've got a lot of issues with colors. The idea was simple at first, traditional(?) red vs blue. Time passed and I was getting more into maybe male vs female thoughts. And finally a life vs death concept where the female becomes somewhat mixed and has more control over her mind.

I remember reading a long while back about a study of red vs blue. It turned out over 50% of the time the red team usually won. I also heard a few things about monkies evolving into humans and being able to see the color red was a major bonus. Eating their veggies, better veggies... Go figure. Anyways, one theory is that red is the color of your blood and you'll put forth greater passion into winning.

Some stats I would personally <3 to see is World of WarCraft's Horde vs Alliance. But that has far greater depth than just two colors. I glanced at TF2's stats and they seem kind of even.

Moving on like I said I wanted a male vs female'ish concept. I really enjoyed this idea as I thought it could make a lot of sense in the theme. The problem in this case is the game can be single player or multi-player. I didn't want to force a gender lock on the multi-player and I don't wanna do any extra work between the single/multi. Also by adding more than two core colors it would throw off the balance of 1vs1/TeaMvsTeaM. This needs to be rooted IMHO at least for a great while.

ok before I get way ahead of myself let's hault at male vs female. From what I've heard, ages ago, way, way back in time the powers that be decided to pick colors for being male or female. By this time the monkey brains had more thoughts flowing than just eat, drink, poop, sleep, try to avoid death, and yes, get their animal on.

They built on morals, right vs wrong, good and evil, stuff of that nature. Blue was chosen for males I assume. At that time period we didn't really have too many colors to pick from. It seemed accepted that red was evil while white was holy. Perhaps a bit blinded by the light, from the sun. On the other side we had red, fire... Destruction. A bit ironic...

Anyways, red was way too evil for a woman and white far too holy. Now you have to remember at this time males usually had the upper hand on females. This must be around the time the Bible/GoD appeared too. The little I know of the Bible it's kind of all based on males(I think). GoD, Satan, angels all males(?), HeII even a rib ripped from a male to form a female(eh... Just plz no). Which created Adam/Eve, and I never looked into how that other woman came to be(Not to turn this into a Bible story, but was she the "Apple").

Moving along using white made females too close to GoD(Lose male power) and red too close to the Devil(Too much male power). Somehow white/red mixed and all of a sudden pink was revealed. Perhaps one of the strongest, if not the strongest colors to humans because it's so connected with being female'ish and because it contains red(We can see it, it's blood. Although I'm pretty sure orange is the most visible to humans).

At that time I really thought about the male vs female of being green vs pink. Two very cool and epic colors, but I felt pink too incredible for its own good. Somehow locking the theme/game into once again a gender issue. Also pink was close to red, one of the base colors decided on the theme from the early days. Besides pink I was always interested in orange and it went well with green(I guess I'm gonna say HL:Opposing Force, but I didn't even touch the multi-player except a few times). Yellow/Green is ok too, but yellow is bright...

Yadda Yadda Yadda somebody smack IceIYIaN already and tell him about Age of Empires/RTS games :P Let's take a step away from the colors and go into other aspects of Elements of War:
At first we got humans.
Team One(Blue) --- Team Two(Red)
Too much crystal and you turn into a zombie. I guess I'mma say pure evil, kill anything, ANYTHING.
You live long enough to control the crystals. Your mind decent enough... You're pretty much a super buffed level 87 boss type, {SKULL}! MA MA MA MONSTER KiLLeR!!!111

Somewhere between all that two other colors come into play. Turning you into more of a Male(Green) and Female(Orange) being. Now it makes sense if the colors merge to just form purple(Not crystal based, but I could care less for purple, sorry my fav turtle) or two other crystals fall at a later time. I'm more for the merge except male/female-green/orange. I'm also getting more and more into the blood sucking/vampire'ish idea for some reason. But zomfg we don't need healing in EoW. I'm liking this idea only because the two main TooNz of EoW are vegetarians.

So after typing all this I think I really like the idea of being blue/green, blue/orange mixed on the creature or red/green, red/orange...

So, I was watching the MLG this weekend(Well, I had no idea the event was going on, but caught some of the replays). WoW wasn't showing atm so I switched to Halo III. Yeah yeah, auto-aim + controller is horribad, but it's still slightly ok to watch.

Anyways, during one match an X-BoX froze. The game was like two seconds from being over... The rulebook had them play the match over.

Well, I gotta admit I'm pretty disappointed with E-SportZ(or video games played for money). I've played video games for years now and got into competitive gaming a number of years back. I assumed as years went bye, things would just keep growing and get bigger. I could be wrong, but this just doesn't seem to be the case. At least for the two games I've played the most, Counter-Strike and for almost three years now World of WarCraft.


Everything else in video games are mainstream now. Yet if you mention E-SportZ, most people /boggle and say something along the lines of a sports game(football/basketball/etc). What's the deal, how can this be? While there have been a number of success stories, there are even more failures.

The idea of E-SportZ is four things to me. The act of playing the video game is fun. It has some kind of competitive value(beating somebody's score/time, playing against others). The act of watching that game is fun. It has a large enough audience/user base that it's worth spending money on. Some video games, not all, meet that requirement.

The first issue we must overcome is assuming the fewer, the better. We haven't really seen anything over 5vs5 take off and usually it's less than that(I haven't really seen any single player games hit the big time in E-SportZ, the only I can think of is the movie "The Wizard" with Super Mario Bros). Mainly we haven't pushed over 5vs5 cause of room space/money paid out/time to play games/computers/etc required. 5vs5 or less is a good starting point, but in a number of years the amount of players won't matter.

The second issue is we separate males from females. There's a few reason we do this IRL. Babies, we don't wanna kill em. Body parts, we don't allow touching em. Females are usually smaller than males. Then throughout the ages females just got held back in a few cases. In terms of video games, the main problem is we don't see male/female character models/sounds/etc... With the user base of World of WarCraft, yeah, include both if you want cash, developers. Also, if we're gonna separate something, maybe age groups. But this is way into the future when we have some user bases and audiences.

It's all based on LAN and even then, companies want you to travel the world. LAN I can understand, not quite possible to cheat, Internet connections/etc don't matter, everyone has the same hardware, yadda yadda. In reality none of that poopie matters. I'm probably watching your event from my house many states away. But sure, LAN is the best. However, what's the point of having your event in Texas one month, few months later Florida, few months later New England? Why not base your company around one major gaming city and stay put? The same people will keep coming back and invite their friends. You and your company won't have to travel, pro gamers will move around this state, gamers interested in this will move to the state, after so long you'll probably get deals on locations around this area.

Picking games that haven't even sold one million copies(or even released for two months), lack a multi-player user base(modern day we consider this online play), lack online communities(websites), isn't even made by a well known publisher/developer or well known period, or have too much of a high tech requirement(pc hardware). If there isn't even 1,000 people playing the game online at any give time, how in the world do you expect to get 10,000 people to view your event? Are stats always known about a game? No. Can you sometimes use common sense? Yes. With sites like this: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/ and I dunno where the GameSpy.com one went, we can get pure numbers and facts. Judging by the Steam page alone we know Counter-Strike has the user base and it appears Call of Duty V does too(I don't recall CoD series, but I don't believe they had such a user base before?). World of WarCraft tauts millions of users so this is by far the most obvious choice. As for console games last I recall Halo had massive numbers(1/2 sold a lot, but 3 has the online user base to back it up now).

Picking games that don't even have good software. The ability to record demos, make movies, allows some kind of tv mode that people with the game can watch from inside the game, allows you to separate players, spectators, commentators from each other(we're looking at you, n00b console games), allows modders to make char models for your sponsors, maps with all your sponsor items in them, etc(we're looking at you, n00b console games), have some kind of "spectator mode" with different camera angles, HUD's, you name it.

Limiting your viewers. Using only demos, only tv mode, only one tv station, only one websites, not backing your files up so you can later have people dl and watch them YEARS later, yadda yadda. Only basing your event around one time period. Adding all kinds of neat features weeks later would be great. Cool frag movies, interviews, stats, etc.

Picking horribad developers and their games. If a company released a sequel to their game every year or two, that's a major split in the user base(X-PackZ also split their multi-player, unless it's a MMORPG, well, slightly, but still). If that company doesn't even release patches for at least a year and beyond you drop that game right this instant. Then even after all that, the company asks you for way more than you should give them. You're giving them everything, they don't need much in return.


At the end of the day, the passion is there, but the money is required. Then finally E-SportZ will be where it should be.

This goes for all Quake games so if you have the answer give it, also, make sure you list what game the command is for:

What's the command to turn on/off the HUD
on/off weapon
Right/Left/Center weapon
FoV command
Crosshair on/off

Quake 1 had a config file called Quake.rc, did every other Quake game have this file and if so what did they name it? For example any game on the GS/Source engine use Valve.rc

So, as I'm sure you know that working out keeps your mind and body in shape. For the time being and in the probable future, we mainly use our eyes, arms, wrists and fingers. With things like the Wii, new control schemes are coming. But this is ESReality and we play first person shooters. IMHO nothing can compare with the mouse and keyboard...

With that in mind, what kind of workouts would help us, as gamers?

For eyes I seen a tv show a long time ago about reading. While yes, games(fps'ers the most :P) help eyes, the thing about reading made sense. While I didn't buy the program myself, every now and then I'll use my eyes and look at random points. While trying to be speedy and accurate.

I think jogging and the like help the bloodflow of the heart. Sometimes while gaming you can get your blood pumping pretty hard. This seems pretty useful all around.

So anyways, what do you guys think would help? Have any interesting stretches?

I make a mod called Elements of War: 1337 Board.

Which is:
A new keyboard menu(aka your hotkeys) in the options menu for Gold Source and Source engines.
Countless config files for any game that looks like a Quake.cfg file.

What I'm looking for today:
As many mouse commands as you know.
Weaponslot commands.
Camera commands.
Etc.

Plz look at the following posts and see what I've got, then feel free to add anything.

Remember, this is for QUAKE config.cfg
So, Quake/Half-Life. Also any games using those configs, such as Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Call of Duty, and as many as you know. Thanks in advance.

Even though I own Quake I-IV+Live :p, I was thinking about picking up Q3+Team Arena on Steam. Simply put I make game mods and I've been interested in push id software for some time.

Anyways, player count for Q3-Team Arena?
Do I have to switch between versions or can I just load TA and play with Q3A players?

It's in Quake II, III, never tested on IV, and Quake Live.

Run forward and hold duck. Now hold jump. Let go of duck and you jump. Does ducking = jumping make sense to anyone except a CS small jump?

At least it isn't Unreal. Hey guys if you duck you cannot fall off the edge :p l2suicide :p

As always, player physics bring out the best and worst of us. Any Counter-Strike 1.3 to 1.4++ player or Quake/UT'er will agree. Nothing makes us want to slam the keyboard or kick the designers privates harder!

Player physics are summed up by player movement. Also note worthy is sound(footsteps, etc), how you control the game(controllers blow, fact :p), weapons, and/or other variables.

I find it highly amusing that there are so many different player physics out there. I could make this post epic by listing some of the greater details, but instead you either know what you're talking about or you don't!

So, I'll list some noteworthy games, but by all means this isn't a full list.

Simply spam your weapon sheath hotkey(Default Z I believe) and switch weapons.

You can:

Show yourself using a 2h'er and have a 2h'er on your back.

Show yourself using a 2h'er and shield with a 1'her on your side (Even though you're actually using a 1h'er and shield)

Etc.

I played on Shattered Hand - Ruin BG since WoW:BC came out. Found out about a few players that live around me on Eredar... I was going to roll Horde, but something happened and I just x-ferred over (:

At level 30-40 I became a "CareBear". Still was a "Griefer" in Battle Grounds though. When I came to Eredar I went straight griefer... However, I'm leaning more towards my old style of play, but this time with a griefer attitude(they want to start anything, they die).

If you already made some, you'll have to change the numbers...

Note, you should change your camera from scroll up/down to ALT scroll up/down. That way you can use the Kill/Corruption macro as scroll up and Charge/Intercept/Curse of Agony as scroll down.

Why? Cause it /startattack - Giving you a target, start attacking, then casting an instant cast spell. It's rather important... But to each their own.

Realm - Shattered Hand (Now Eredar)

I'm a somewhat known player from Shattered Hand and the BG Ruin. Mainly because I wielded the Grand Marhsal's Warblade and used an enchant called Icy Chill, which made the sword perhaps the biggest in the game. Not only that, but I played Alterac Valley a lot(I World PvsP CareBear, so, most of my kills came from AV)

So, a little more info about what happend to the Grand Marshal Warblade:

At 60 (WoW:BC), I got the Grand Marshal 1h'er. I had no cash, so, I got Icy Chill as the enchant for giggles. The glow turned out to be massive. I then went on to get another 1h'er and the Grand Marshal 2h'er. For months I used these weapons in Alterac Valley.

The weapons, my /cast !Battle Stance, /point /say KiLL, and when raid leader/assistant I used the moon icon made my toon really stand out in Alterac Valley.

Then I found out about the warrior mount trick. You could pull your weapons and then mount. Once on the mount, you could do /cast !Battle Stance. I made a movie and probably not even a week later Blizzard nerfed Icy Chill hard. Amazingly, they didn't do it to the 2h'er.

I kept playing, til right before they added the new abilities pre-WoW:WotLK. I knew I should have stayed, but I waited for a while(I make a game mod called Elements of War, I was working on that). A week ago I played again and they nerfed me once again.

If you're a Grand Marshal that used two 2h'ers with Icy Chill, I would really love to see a screenshot or movie before they nerfed it(if they didn't nerf it for that patch).

So, everybody knows we play FPS'ers with a keyboard and mouse. However, it's nice to sometimes play with the controller too. Perhaps even controller and mouse... Then some other crazy ways, but I'm not getting into that here (:

While there have been plenty of controllers for GameZ for WindowZ, none have really stood out. Then X-Box gave the controller to the PC. Millions of people have the X-Box. So...

First, I'd just like to state I use ASDF hotkeys. What that means is a is back, s is forward, d is strafe left, and f is strafe right. Touch typing. So, I dunno about you default WoW players, but it's beyond easy for me to hit "Alt-Z". If you've never hit that key, that just means it removes the GUI/HUD from the game. I highly suggest you check it out if you've never used the hotkey before.

Alt - Z needs to change:
It should remove the World Map (Default M?)
If you hit "Esc" /escape and then hit Alt-Z to bring back the HUD you shouldn't see the Menu.
Why doesn't the advanced Floating Text appear, but the default one does?
They removed the bar life things above a player's head a few patches ago. This is good and bad in a number of ways. The biggest one I see is that I have no idea what the player might be casting at times.
When you hit Alt-Z a few times, why does it remove some of the floating text early? (I could just be seeing things, but it seems that way to me)

As of the current patch Alt-Z only shows names and floating text.

Colored names should be changed:
Once again back to Alt-Z, it's really hard to tell who you're attacking. While yes, you can turn off A.I., enemy player, and team names and only your target's name would appear, this just isn't fair. A player using an Orb of Deception(Rare), eat a fish(boo I'm a vegetarian AND Alliance), or become the SkuLL GoD/DeSS could easily crush you before you know what's up. This is not Red vs Blue. If anything change a red and or yellow name to something different when you've got them selected. Plz change your own color when you select yourself.

Speaking of which the bar life above a player's name could be changed in color too to make it easier to tell who you've got selected.

While Alt-Z is still highly useful, it does leave much room to be desired. Either make it so you can customize it or even better, make a third HUD which gives extreme control over it. The biggest complaints I've got is I cannot tell my life, the enemy life, or see their casting bar. Maybe even tell if they've got a target while you're at it.

When you have a target, maybe make it tell what the target is(Warrior, Warlock, etc)? Maybe show an icon or maybe even an option to remove their name and replace it with their class. Target of target could also be good :p

Shift, Control, Alt should be able to be put anywhere on the keyboard. It's just not fair hotkey placement AT ALL.

Why are names SO MASSIVE? You've got titles, guild, and some of the largest pet names I've ever seen. Oh well you'll only see Iceiyian on me :p

ICONS:
Alt-Z was changed to removed icons. Either some people complained when they got an icon above their head or more likely they wanted Alt-Z to remove pretty much everything like it is now. Some options I'd like to see if you've got an icon above yourself: The icon shows on your player's life bar maybe on your face or around it. Either you can see through the icon or remove it from the top of your head and only show it on the life bar. Icons shouldn't be allowed on enemy pets(warlock/hunter). I've never tested on their bunnies, dogs, frogs, whatever other pet they got(Interesting, I'll have to check that). It's just not fair to those classes to have this giant skull above their pet's head.

When you're not in a group, you should be allowed to use icons at will. This would just help in so many ways I don't see why it isn't default. This would boost leader/tanks IMHO. Then again I use hotkeys, but whatever.

Pretend I'm starting out with nothing. What would I need?

Starters: Need computers. Depending on game, but at least two for the players, then any number for the spectators.

A game. Easier than doing a few. I feel that WoW would gather the most players, but you'd be forced to play online which defeats the idea of the LAN. I was a long time Counter-Strike player, but I believe you have to get in contact with Valve on a lot of their stuff. Plus I'd have to amp the max players, I'd say at least 3vs3, but the choice would be 5vs5(impossible to get the players).

The graphics on UT3 are just too powerful for most computers. UT2004 or Quake III could be a good choice. I'd amp the player physics on UT2004 of course and have to use CPMA. I hate vQ3's player physics, they suck poopie. AIR CONTROL WTF. Halo II could be interesting, the location I want has a place that runs Halo stuff. I'd love to wtfpwn them with a keyboard and mouse.

Tables. Chairs.

How do I get the computers connected? I've never did even a two computer LAN, let alone a large one.

Any suggestions? Remember, think really low tech, lol! Then we'll work our way up to the top if possible ^^

Dear ESReality,

While my game is far from being an E-Sport, the basic idea of the game rather spawned from E-Sports. It's the struggle of Red vs Blue with a slight twist. Crystals fell from the sky spreading a virus. Humans are turned into red or blue "zombies". Infected, they hate the other color with extreme passion. As time passes, they become more humanish and after a bit, even learn special moves.

I'm not really a coder, so, I've already got one too many problems to start naming. However, I can do certain things to the game. I'd like you guys to take a look at the Half-Life 2 version and perhaps suggest me a few ideas that maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to add into the game.

Config Maker? (2 comments)

Configs. config.cfg. Hotkeys. Console commands. The list goes on. A problem I see right now is games only give so many options when you look in the options menu. One really, beyond weak, option 99% of all games give, is only one or two buttons for any hotkey in the game. I find this silly. While we've got a console(no, not a Nintendo), most consoles stink. Sometimes you don't even know if your commands will work. A lot of the time you just guess what a command might actually be. One other option we've got, is to exit said game, perhaps alt-tab if you're lucky, and create and edit the config in some kind of text editor.

What I'm asking is, where's the config maker? While we've got a number of text editors, why do none stand above the rest? Why do none have options to change colors of words(They do, I've seen them for coding, but not like this)? Say I load Counter-Strike's config and change the config maker into CS. All my graphics commands turn red, my movement commands go blue, my settings go green, so on and so forth?

Why do game makers not include their own config maker? Valve's Half-Life 2 and Source Engine is a prime example. You've got an amazing console. Why not just change the console into a config maker(and leave the console though)? Rather than seeing everything that's going on, like you just died or you did exec a new config or whatever, you would see a config. You could text edit it. Go anywhere in your config and change anything you wanted. You could make new configs, rename them, whatever. All your commands could be turned into colors. Below it you've got your normal console. You type a command and it'll be added to the bottom of your config. You type there and see if the command even exsists. This could also be shown in the normal text editor.

If something like this exsists, show me the path.

Elements of War was inspired by the Legend of Zelda, among other games. The Dungeon Levels are for the most part ripped straight from Zelda 1, however.

If you've ever played Nox, that's what those rocks are. LoL.

Half-Life 2 and E-Sports. (4 comments)

Hello ESReality. I'm a mod maker developing a game called Elements of War. I've decided to skip out on UT3's make something Unreal contest once again. These last few days I've been updating the Half-Life 2 version of the game. Mainly doing a lot of silly stuff, that doesn't really sound so silly. More than 22 camera views have been added(single player), options to switch configs with hotkeys, sensitivity, ability to remove first person view model(weapon/hand), remove hud, this list goes on and on.

The main problem with the mod atm is I don't know how to make models(I need at least two char models). Even though my UT2003/2004 version was coded, I'm not really that good at coding and don't wish to explore HL2's code anytime soon. I'm also lazy ^^.

Anyways, this really isn't the next big game or even an E-Sports. However, I want to expland on things that seem E-Sportish. I was just wondering if you could post some ideas or suggestions to a default Half-Life 2 single/multi-player game.

Also, I would like to check out sweet movies or demos of some people playing(I've been playing WoW for a long time and never got into the Half-Life 2 scene-I played CS).

Next question, I knew about some HL2 money tournaments when it first came out. I pretty much doubt they'll have any money for the game atm, but I'm sure leagues still exsist for it. I know CPL just died, are there any other good HL2 leagues?

"Flawed" Movement - The Bigger Problems in FPS'ers

I've been wanting to write a bunch of articles forever now, but always seem to get writers block. I figured I might as well share some of my ideas anyways... This is what I had so far...

This is not only a problem that Counter-Strike players have, but it has effected the gamers of Quake/2/3, UT/2003/4, PainKiller, CoD, and any number of titles from FPS games to other genres. Releasing a patch, x-pac, or second coming of the game can cause a public outcry if changes are made, however small or drastic. You still hear echos of 1.3 to this day from Counter-Strike players.

If you've been playing first person shooters as long as I have, you start to realize some of the bigger points in those types of games. Movement, is one of them. It's also worth noting that other sections of the game can effect movement as well. Sound and maps come to mind first and foremost, with how you control the game(keyboard/mouse, controller variant, etc) also being a huge factor.

For starters, basic movement would be forward, back, strafe left and strafe right. Going into more detail, we have walking and jumping. Now this is where it starts to get interesting, what other movements can we use? Certain games have added leaning and proning, some have added dodging, some combine two or more elements such as the duck/jump. It's really quite interesting to note that the "big" name FPS'ers all have different movements. Some by a programming error and others designed that way. Also, a lot of movement has been fairly explored and things will start to stale out in the coming generations.

Let's talk about some movements and learn how they manipulate the flow of said game, shall we?

Take Counter-Strike. For what should have been just a simple game, it has an incredible depth of movement. You can do the basics, directional movement, run/walk varients, ducking, jumping, small jump(tap duck), duck/jump(hold duck in the air), and possibly the greatest flaw ever found, the strafe jump. The strafe jump is really "curving" while in the air. Every weapon also has it's own movement speed as well. Making melee quite possible at times.

In Counter-Strike 1.3, you could also constantly jump with/out losing speed. Making for other movements as well. You could control how fast you went forward and jumped, so if you did it right you could "Bunny-Hop". As in CS, sound is beyond important. Bunny-Hopping is just jumping with/out making a noise. Now this is just the basics, I could go on and on trust me ;)

The small jump and duck add some tactics to the way you fight your battle. You could peak over objects with/out getting your head blown off and you could duck to avoid fire. The bunny-hopping changed the flow of the game. What normally seems slow, added a faster pace to those times when you didn't want to make noise and needed to move around. It also appears different as the constant jumping up and down seems more entertaining than the normally stale running.

Then came the dreaded 1.4 patch. Jumping now slows you down to a snails pace. Also of importance is that this patch made footsteps louder and heard at a greater distance(at least I think it was this one...?). The game now heavily relies on "Crosshair" Flow ((( http://www.mrfixitonline.com/readPosting.asp?PostingId=1671295 ))) and slow movement. As stated earlier, sound is of such a huge importance in Counter-Strike that it does basically come down to walking and quick peaking(letting go of walk and then peaking at camping spots then walking again).

Then take a game like UT or UT2003/4. A totally different move set. The huge factor in UT is the "dodge". A faster movement compared to running that is basically a leap in any direction. Of note you have to hit a direction two times in order to make the move. Mainly people run forward, look right or left, then hit strafe left or right in the opp direction they looked. While in the air they then look forward again. Repeat. Easier done than said perhaps ;)

UT2kX added a whole slew of other jumps as well. You could do a second jump while in the air. So you could jump onto a wall, then dodge off it. Dodge then do a jump. Jump and jump. Fall and dodge off of a wall. Etc. You really have a lot of crap you can do during and before/after combat. While in the air, you don't really have much control(aka strafe jumping/or curving) though. So, doing certain moves is a risk. Since UT is mainly DeathMatch, you want to get to certain places faster. You see a lot of dodge/jumping while not in combat.

The way you control the game changes it as well. Currently we use mouse/keyboard or a controller varient. Making certain movements easier or harder depending. Sometimes they even get removed. The pace of FPS'ers in console games is far slower than the keyboard/mouse PC games. You can try and change how you preform the move as well. In UT, you have to hit a direction twice to do a dodge. In say Zelda, you just hold "Z" then press any direction. In CS, you press strafe left and turn left to do a curve(or strafe) jump. In PK, however, you just hold forward and turn in the direction you want to curve to. Even a slight change like that can have unpredictable outcomes.

Finally, I'd like to talk about maps. Maps need to be made around the movements the game was designed with. Getting stuck all over the place is -NOT- fun. As I like to call them, "rocks in the field", shouldn't be tolerated. Make a slight invisible wall that is diagonal on courners so that players cannot get caught on them. A super fast game like say PK doesn't need off wall objects like say a very small door or something of that nature. The days of textures over polygons is shurly missed ;) Also, in say UT2003/4, have the layouts based around those movements.

In closing:
A lot of movement has been explored and many games have different movements. Things will get stale soon. However, not all movements, things like flying hasn't really been totally focused on yet and you never know with game exploits/errors. Maps should be based around the game's movements, not just random crap. There are many ways to control certain movements. Nothing is certain on the future either, something might replace a keyboard/mouse anyday now. We could also be doing some virtual games or something of that nature, totally changing the way we play games.

Oh yeah...

CS weapons with UT2004 movements would be virtually crap and Quake's rocket launcher wouldn't be as fun in 1.4 as it is in say 1.3. Food for thought.
