Showed some maps. No linux. Looking for an animation guy because they're lacking quite a few of them. Regarding specs, said they're taking so long to release it that everyone will have supercomputers then.

Doesn't matter much at this point of development.

Gameplay-wise the only thing that matters right now is that he is testing out what he wants, on the alpha state instead of doing that when the game has been already released years ago (Warsow, Reflex).

Yes. Gameplay takes way less time to develop than making the models and animating them. Plus for the most part gameplay can be done at the end because it doesn't rely on having completed previous parts of the game before, unlike gun animations that require the guns to be made.

Weren't you always critical of Warsow's art style? This looks almost the exact same, and in fact goes even further with the cartoonish look and feel. Gameplay wise it offers nothing new either like reflex - so what exactly do you like about this / dislike about wsw+reflex.

I have never criticized the art style of Warsow. I disliked that the devs started changing the gameplay, the maps and the overall concept after 0.12 or 0.2 (can't recall which). In actuality Warsow implemented the cartoonish gfx you are describing years after everyone had stopped playing it, so nobody cared by then.

What I dislike about Reflex are not the graphics and not even the gameplay or the game itself, but the project. I dislike what the devs did to falsely advertise the game as a Quake3 successor when in actuality they were trying to move away from QL, to then beginning to falsely advertise themselves as the CPMA developers (Arqoon is the only one that matters) and seasoned developers as well (without saying they only made 2D GBA games that received 6/10 scores), and the huge amount of unfulfilled promises for a game on development since 2012. Not that it matters anymore, since Reflex has practically no playerbase (irrelevant) and the project leader has long left (it's not even Reflex anymore).

I'm not positive or negative about Diabotical. Didn't say that on those two posts, didn't imply it. Just said that the gameplay is usually refined once the game is more developed on other aspects, which is true in game development. When devs don't do that and just begin with gameplay is that you end up with games such as Warsow and Reflex, that years down the line start having new versions of the gameplay, which of course drives people away.

Warsow's gameplay changed much more significantly than that before that - for instance it used to have unlimited wall jumps etc. The biggest change from 0.1 - > 0.2 was that they nerfed the rail hard because it was totally dominant. Hardly the sort of thing that would justify the level of vitriol you displayed over the years.

For reflex, I'm fairly sure they positioned themselves (within the afps community at least) as a successor to cpm. Perhaps to the wider gaming public, that would be interpreted as being a quake3 successor. Either way, hardly something justifying the level of hate you throw their way.

The reason that it's quite clear that you are fanboyishly positive about diabotical is because you seem to be willing to atleast try and make some kind of seemingly level headed arguments about it, even if they are totally wrong - art assets are usually the thing that comes last - first you refine the gameplay/features using placeholder assets etc and then once you know what you need you start finalising the art. Ideally you would do it more or less in parallel though. Think about how a map is made for example - the art pass come at the later stages, once the layout is more or less refined.

Either way this criticism of yours doesn't really apply to Warsow or reflex as these were made open to the public at a much earlier stage than diabotical. If you recall, when reflex went early access, all the maps were grey box etc

It was always a team effort. arQon was the code developer and very heavily involved in analyzing and signing off ideas but ideas came from the design team and the community as well and went through major phases of testing.

Totally agree. I remember when Reflex was just out of kickstarter I was quite passionate about its future, I argued against the HUD timers etc and asked for callvotable vq3 physics. These two simple changes would have made it far more popular, rather than targeting a niche of a niche (a specialised mode of an already small player base - arena shooter) All I got was abuse from Reflex fanatics. Well look how things turned out.

It's not that it's easy or difficult. It's just that without a solid foundation you shouldn't be immediately making final decisions; otherwise sooner or later that work will have to be redone. So many Quake clones have made that mistake.

The foundation here is to first have clear concepts and to have a game that works, no matter how it plays. For small companies those two processes are harder than making the gameplay. So, the priority is and should be to have a clear concept, to make a functioning engine and to hire artists. If not then the game would be another Warsow or another Reflex, in terms of them starting to re-make the whole concept, re-make the guns, re-make the gameplay and so on, with all the previous years long work being wasted because of not having a solid foundation.

TBH 99,9% of games are forgotten instantly. It's how the industry is. Look at how many one year old multiplayer PC games have more than merely 10,000 active players (have a healthy global playerbase): it's no more than only 30. Out of those games no more than 5 have over one million active players (have a healthy playerbase for esports).

Stuff like invisibility, personal teleporter to name a few, this was all a year or more before the kick starter when he was showing the first footage of the engine and game.

It's just something to want to see since literally all his showing for the past 6 months is Quake remake.

It doesn't help he's stopped the regular update streams, though. I don't know why you'd stop cause it gets people hyped for the game but now everyone is forgetting the game is even "still happening" now that QC has launched.

Even if he can't showcase huge leaps forward each stream, maybe he can play a duel or show off something cool they're planning to do? Surely there must be a lot happening behind the scenes. Those streams are basically free publicity!
