Quakecon/id have never been serious about professional gaming. I only go to the con for the free stuff. With nvidia gone, I can now go to Blizzcon instead.

Quakecon = id showcase = future of id products.

Without the hype machine Quakecon has traditionally generated (since their E3 and tradeshow prescence is laughable at best, especially with Microshaft and Sony going at each other this year and last) the media take almost zero interest in their release schedule, which is no surprise really given most of it is recycled garbage.

Quakecon pro-gaming hype = the future of id's sales base.

The illusion that 'pro-gaming' is sustainable and that their games are something special over everyone else's still (which in itself is a joke) comes from maintaining high prize pools and making it easy for everyone to buy into that dream. Streaming videos of live games at an event crammed with id fanatics and hundreds of PC's in the byoc is a huge part of that image.

This year was a massive fail, and the press coverage has been resultingly piss poor. 50k to 5m players John? You'll be lucky to get 5k if you carry on this way...

i owned #quakecon on qnet a few years ago and basically did coverage and stuff. just informing people. lol, we had all the news earlier than the official channel on etg. how i love disabled people trying to run big things. good times
