Same thing as in Q3 and to some extent in Q4 I think.

Good gameplay, fast movement that takes a bit of time to learn, balanced weapons. Good maps. No remakes!

And also out-of-the-box competitive features :P

Good support for movie making, like camera support, proper GUI for exporting footage at desired FPS. Ability to select what kind of items to show and how +++

Some of the old models. They're a big part of the feeling Quake has. Their sounds as well of course.

what is picmip?
edit: Ok, I've just learned what picmip is, and why on earth you'd ever want 5 of them is beyond me.

Also, for the record, forceambient in Q4 looks infinitely better for essentially the same result.

If this game runs well on machines with 64mb video cards and 1.3ghz single core processors, then ONLY the people with those computers would even WANT to play it. And for the most part, they're too poor to buy anything provided by the would-be advertisers that would fund the games distribution.

So it's lose/lose.

Ok, granted they do two different things. But are they different means to the same end?
As in, is it for visibility improvements? if so, then it serves the same purpose as forceambient does. Even if it's for an FPS improvement it's doing the same thing.

If it's solely for fps then... ewwwwww

If it's for visibility, there are better solutions.

Forceambient and picmip are nowhere near the same.

Forceambient creates a single ambient lightsource which does away with all the expensive FPS hogging lights which cast shadows and make it hard to see in a fps online game.
It has no impact on the detail of textures.
.
Picmip lowers the quality of the textures so they appear less detailed and allows an opponent to stand out more from the background.

It's one of the primary commands for visibility so I'm curious when you say they are better solutions, because one without the other are useless.

gamma <no impact on fps, good visibility gain>
picmip <small impact on fps, good visibility gain>
forceambient <huge impact on fps, good imapct on vis>
brightskins <no impact on fps, huge impact on visibility>

They're nowhere near the same in their own right, but again, you're still showing me that it's a different means to the same end.
What happened when i investigated was that i discovered that picmip essentially made the whole thing look smudged.
Why would you want this? Either for visibility purposes, FPS increase, or both.
Well, imo forceambient does both of those things. I don't notice any FPS increase, but that's probably because of my computer. But I do notice a big increase in visibility with the particular settings I use. Forceambient+Brightskins (which are a given, as far as I'm concerned), = Oodles of visibility.
So while yes, they are two completely different things, could you essentially substitute one for the other?
I think so.

Yeah i know, i use vertex in Q3 because it doesn't have the forceambient option, but if it did, I'd choose that.
Part of why I brought it up is in the hopes that the new game has forceambient.

from what i know they just tried to get the same thing with forceambient done what vertexlight did, meaning everything has the same brightness and no shadows and such stuff.

So why would you want forceambient in q3 when its already there...?

you can select either vertex or forceambient in Q4, and the washed out look that the vertex lighting gives is actually a hindrance in visibility in comparison to the forceambient.
Similar to my complaint about picmip.

I'm not at all suggesting that any options NOT be available. That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm just saying that they're a poor alternative to a superior configuration option. I'm not saying don't allow picmip, or don't allow vertex, but when I can't tell the depth from one wall to the next (when trying out picmip), then it's a damn good thing i already know the map, or else I'd be s.o.l.

From what I've seen, the only game that gets the -0 texture right without thoroughly compromising clarity of surface location (not the pretty little details and wall art, but actually how far from it my opponent is), is Quakeworld. I can play with the all pink walls and see where everything is just fine in that. In Q4 i have a similar setup.

Edit: Also, as for the difference between Vertex and Forceambient, is that Vertex lighting also affects the opponent, so that for all the lighting simplicity of the walls and floor and ceiling, the opponent is also *somewhat camouflaged into it. Whereas in Forceambient the opponent remains a VERY bright green against the much darker walls around them.
I'll update my posted config when i get off of work so that you can see what I'm talking about.
Also, is your Q3 config available? I may be getting completely different results than you are.

BTW, r_vertexlight in q4max isnt really vertex lighting - it was named that way because it was similar to it, to help q3'ers understand its purpose without having to explain to them what a global ambient light is.

Q4max r_vertexlight and r_forceAmbient are basically the same, apart from the fact that forceAmbient turns off all lights, where as r_vertexlight turns off only map lights, so leaves things like projectile + powerup lights alone.

Q3 vertex light uses the lighting information stored in each vertex (hence the name) when it was compiled. This gets rid of most shadow effects in the map (because they're not generally at vertices) although does not remove all lighting from the level, unlike the q4 ambient light solutions.

well its just another tool in the quest for better visibility.

Most people <on this site> who play this game online don't care about the graphics, they want smooth FPS and good visibility because it suits the level they play at. I.E. fairly high, reaction based. Every miliscond counts- especially with guns like railgun.

If you have high detail texture maps it makes it harder to see ,which costs reaction time which is basically ping/lag> that why most use higher picmip because it's givs more FPS and more visibility.

Also when q4 came out I doubt the average gaming rig was much more than an AMD 3400, with something like a 6600/6800 GT. the game bombed bigtime because of that, read ESR from 2005 and see for yourself..

So when you say that, what you're really saying to most people is why do you want to take longer to react to opponent, make less ipressive shots and lose frames.

That's the mindset of most quakers, it's little things like that, that's why its the hardest game to win at.

?? I play with forceambient on and no bumpmaps on a computer that scores over 13k in 3dmark06.
I play crysis smoothly at 1280x960 on very high settings

BUT, I play q4, and qw at 800x600 because my NEC Multisync fe992 gets 160hz at that resolution, so I have a higher screen-refresh than any LCD will ever be capable of (within the next decade at least)

And when i started playing Q4, I was on an AMD 4000+ and a 7900GT (came out around the same time as Q4 did)

So I fully understand the need for reaction times and visibility. I'm just saying that picmip is the ugliest way to get the job done, because the solutions to the same actual problems, (FPS/Visibility), has improved a lot since the late 90's.

edit: I actually play all of my competitive fps games at 800x600, not just q4 and qw, also d3, r1q2, q3, pk, etc.
I play UT3 at 1600x1200, and I play single player games like HL2 and Portal at 2048x1536.

2nd edit: That came off more defensively than i meant for it to. All I was really getting at was that i totally understand the desire for higher fps and better visibility, and my config does an exceptional job at both.

Picmip gives the game a nice look IMO, and I can't imagine playing Q3 without it. High picmip in Q3 gives a similar look to very low compressionsize for textures in Q4, so it is very different from forceambient. Most quake players want a clean look without too much details on the walls, models etc.

I disagree. It just needs an option to turn it off on a server.

For matches between teams and duels it's definately bettre when switched off. But for newbies who start out with ffa it won't work cause there will almost always be idiots who will use cheats on pubs. Especially if they can get them easily.

you need a browser to play it, thats a fact.

In windowed mode, it runs just as smooth as if you had alt-enter'd your Q3 but instead of being able to drag the window around, the game is be embeded to the QuakeZero website from which you launched the game (you may drag that window around if you wish).

Just because it can be launched from the website doesn't mean that it implicitly requires a webbrowser or that launching mechanism. The game is embedded to the website, when its launched from the site.

Everyone should wait for more details before throwing facts around.

Totally agree. But I think CPMA netcode is pushing the limits of our connections already. But yeah, everything can be improved. Syncerror, just get Carmack to look into CPMA's netcode and tell him to improve it, thats the solution.

he did write the whole networking part of (at least, but maybe all) most of his engines. So that at least means he knows something about it. I know he was one of the first to write a tcp/ip connection for gameing (q1).

I cannot stress enough how important that is. The movement tutorial. If there is no movement tutorial, or at least a defrag map included automatically, then it's gonna go the same route as everything else that requires skill, and it's gonna be left behind.

From what I understood from SyncError QuakeZero will use VQ3 movement.

I think we can expect a game very similar to VQ3 with perhaps some minor tweaks, most likely decreased railgun damage.

Personally I would like a bit faster circlejump en crouchsliding. Basically Quake 4 movement and of course octogonial hitboxes.

On the technical side of thing:

sv_fps 50 and com_max fps 150 instead of 30 - 125 and CPM netcode.

yes it makes sense, but so far almost every game has become better with mods.
The only real exception is warcraft / starcraft but that is because blizzards support is exceptional.

Not to take anything away from id but without mods their games would be not as good as they are today.

Actually arQ didn't change the physics, the fix used the correct 85 FPS physics that id intended. Players changed the physics by using the 125 FPS bug and then assume that that's correct and normal. It's not as you can see on the various jump pads that no longer send you to the right place with 125 FPS.

The question is whether players want the physics as they are at 85 FPS (but fixed, so that they can run at 125fps) or if like CPM, they want the physics fixed and then slightly adjusted to behave more like 125FPS physics do on the broken system.

I like the extra challenge in b2r and some other semi-difficult jumps. Q3 is easy as it is, some challenges are nice :)

Edit: And CPMA VQ3 feels very solid too me, don't miss OSP movement at all. If you want it faster, you can alyways increase player/jumpspeed by a couple percent.

imo the answer to that question depends on how you alter the player movement. if it stays as vq3 then increasing the jump height a little to compensate would be good (not all the way up to 125-style which is too floaty). in fact if you did this by increase jump velocity rather than decrease gravity, it would have the desired effect without making the whole game feel too floaty.

on the other hand if the movement is made faster then there is no need for any increase.

Yes. At this point, I can't care anymore about the difference between original VQ3 physics (OSP) or fixed ones on CPMA. Anyway, I must admit original VQ3 physics have that bit of "extra punch" that makes you feel go faster arround the map, specially in the first 2 jumps when you start strafejumping, but theres no point to play OSP only because of that, when you have all the countless features that make CPMA a superior mod.

The problem with this is that CPMA ones are the fixed ones, which means everyone can jump the same lenght at any FPS. At the same time you get rid of physic bugs like overbounces. Now, this is the "correct" thing to do, but you lose that "feel" original VQ3 physics have.

The perfect solution for this should be the "emulated 125 FPS physics", where you have the fixed, correct CPMA ones, but you force the game to go that bit faster CPMA VQ3 physics are lacking. I don't know how this can be reached technically, but I guess is possible.

If this is done, you have everyone happy: the ones that don't play CPMA VQ3 because of that, and the rest (the rest being the ones that doesn't care about the difference.)

i was referring to an alternative for r_picmip like picking a distinct solid colour (that doesn't look like shit and plastic smeared all over the map) that only affects walls & floors (not models like in Q3) making the game crisp without looking like it's a hacked version of it or played with screwy gfx drivers.

Those aren't curves though, they are built manually into a curved shape, and you can calculate each face easily there if its to be counted as a ceiling or a wall, a true bezier curve ala q3's would be a bit harder I would guess, although the game could possibly split the curve where it goes from a horizontal to vertical, but that might also require splitting up the bezier curve, which could lead to weird things when that part of the curve isn't on the grid, and needs a vertex right there in order to split it. Hmza, tough one, this :D.

because some like picmip 3 and some like a flat wall.

Yeah, I get what you are talking about. But you have to "hype" people to get them interested in the game, just to remember people the game is really coming out. Nothing since August is way too much. Just give us a bit of more details.

The thing that is A MUST to know before we start talking is mod support. 90% of success of QZ relies on that. Remember, if all kind of mods are supported, the idea of building a standard will just be never possible. CPMA vs OSP vs RA3 etc battles will go on forever, splitting the community, and now theres is a possibility to end that.

The perfect solution for this should be that QZ core had all of the CPMA features (netcode, MVD, hud customization, several bug fixes, support for arena type maps so we can have the RA3 players), plus all type of gameplays: CA, enhanced CTF experience ala ThreeWave, Freezetag, etc) with all the new stuff QZ will bring to make newbies start playing instantly *without looking for different mods*, specially the matchmaking feature, this will help alot keeping newbs on the game.

The idea is to have a core that has EVERYTHING to have the perfect VQ3 game experience. You must not need anything more, just going to the webpage, download, and start playing.

i can't wait for this game.. im trying not to get my hopes up too high but i cant help it. already got my brother waiting for this game and asking me for any new info about it every chance he gets too (and he's a halo2 player).

a good matchmaking system is the important feature. I want it to be done well, that's about it..

little gameplay changes would be appreciated too (like lower rail damage).

crouch sliding would probably be neat too but I wouldn't mind if it doesn't make it in quakezero (and I don't think it would)

and of course GOOD NEW MAPS.. i think we're due for another classic map to get overplayed like edge or campgrounds were/are.

I'd also like to hear some official information to hold me off and get my hopes up more :)

I'm not sold that crouchsliding is something that we want to carry on to future titles at all. I think its great in Q4, and as one of the only "new" things present, it makes all the difference in THAT product. But moving forward, I think there are a lot of better movement abilities we can embrace that may prove more enjoyable, balanced and conductive of exciting gameplay. Just look at the fact that most frag videos that attempt to highlight "the best of what is Quake" typically consist of air-rox, air-grenades, player pop-ups that lead to multiple combo hits... we like tossing our opponent around and beating the crap out of them before they can hit the ground. Crouchsliding is the complete opposite of what we find exciting in these movies. When someone is laminated to the floor its more difficult to hit them, more difficult to pop them up. I think in the movement department we still have a lot of room to explore, and we can do it in a way that feels like Quake. I <3 crouchsliding to death in Q4, but that doesn't mean that we should assume its the best game mechanic.

However, please, don't go to far with movement aspects. I mean nobody wants another warsow's dashing/wall jumping. Mastering strafe jumps is already really hard, since even now almost nobody can move as fast as Cooller and as smooth as Z4muZ in Q3.

Quake-ish feeling must remain the same.

Agree with #85 says. Don't add more gimmicks, VQ3 is art. Remember: "easy to learn, hard to master".

You have to think that almost no-one knows about strafejumping, just the hardcore players know about it. This is still a new feature to everyone outside ESR, you just need to explain strafejumping techniques, how the physics work with tutorials and demos etc so newbies don't think we are cheating.

I would disagree, mainly because I play q4 with buttsliding, and i knock people up in the air all of the time. Thats like saying you only pop people in the air when they strafe jump. Most of the pop up shots made in q3 are when they are just dodging left to right or whatever and you land it perfectly at their feet and knock them up. Granted you can send people flying in the air when they strafe jump to; which is the same in Quake 4.Another reason why its good, is because its more advanced movement adding me diversity to the game.. in a good way.

In Quake 4's defense, people still strafe jump te majority of the time they just crouch slide to use it as a sling shot effect to build more speed.. which is a GOOD thing in my opinion.

I want to add something _really_ important to your post:

The fact that these moments are in frag movies is because it isnt easy to accomplish them. Dont go for some uber vertically biased splash scheme where stuff like that is easy.

Crouch sliding IS a good addition and I definately think you should consider it for Quake Zero.

To more more importantly. I think QUake Zero should have a faster more agressive circlejump than VQ3. Quake 4 is about right, CPM circlejump is even better.

I honestly think movement could be simplified further. I love bunny hopping and am pretty fucking good at it but it offers a huge advantage over many people who can never get decent at it. Obviously QW/CPM/Warsow movement is a level beyond Q2/Q3/Q4. Back in the old days of Q1, and Q2 people played without it and had loads of fun. People still play Netquake, ZDaemon, etc without any bunny hopping going on. I'm not against skill based movement but I think the techniques required to utilize faster movement in Quake is too skill intensive. I think with simplified movement that is easy for anyone to do it would be better for the health of the community.

Q3 was played for much longer than the others at a pro level (for cash, I'm not knocking the players of other games, I just think playing for cash pushes technique development much harder than normal play), this means the gameplay is much more 'played out' and inaccessible to normal players. It also means that any non-cash event doesn't have the top players and therefore completely lacks legitimacy, this really kills the grass roots game.

It also doesn't help that the machine gun, both because of instahit constant fire and damage ruined TDM and CTF in Q3.

It has been played longer for cash because there was no other (id?) title to play. Quake II came out a year after QW.

Also, the no-cash issue may hold true for relatively small scenes like CPMA where you can still push the performance envelope but it isn't as evident in say, QW, where you've had multiple tournaments every year (going on for more than a decade and spanning more game modes than just 1v1) and a closely-knit community suppoting big lanparties and even a few international events.

Agreed. I'm of the opinion of the best representing Quake movement set is strafejumping + double + rampjumps.
BTW, on features I'd like to see in Quake zero: fast webdownloads, antilag, and some casual gamers gametype. FFA has become too boring for today's casual gamers, and we all want QuakeZero to capture a big player base. I'd also like other things, but are the same as what the other posters will repeat until satiety. :)

GFX wise, appart from "spicing up textures" (can you Syncerror tell us if that spicing up textures thing will include bump mapping? or just more res ones) models are a bit out dated in the polycount department. I mean, just keep the exactly same models from Q3, they are perfect, but add more polygons to make they more "rounded". This is obviously for spectating or videofrag use, (or to the newbs that like to play full GFX). There must be an option to change from new "high polycount ones" to "original Q3 polycount ones" for the ones that want full performance.

Anyway, more technical info from the whole "spicing up GFX" thing would be cool to know.

one of the most important things for me is fluidity, both in the technical sense (framerate/netcode) and in the movement and responsiveness .

in the 21st century a built in tutorial / training section is very important, especially for learning the movement features. since qz will be free, it will attract a whole load of newbs who will be discovering quake's depth for the first time. i.e. beyond the typical shooting enemies aspect that all fps games have.

i've spent a lot of time in the past introducing newbs to defrag and teaching them the movement. and even though many of them have been your typical casual "play for fun" gamer, they have all absolutely loved learning the movement once i had introduced it to them. initially i was surprised by this: i thought they would get turned off by the depth of it and just go back to newbing around on any old mod, but to my surprise they really love practising it and becoming good at strafing etc. all they need is an introduction to it to ignite it all.

the game has evolved to a state where the player movements are unavoidable features, inseparable from the gameplay. therefore the time has come that id recognise this and start taking the credit for creating strafejumping and circlejumping etc, market it as a feature, and support it through a tutorial etc. hell i'll even write the tutorial section for you if you like.

sure i would love to see all the cpma features there, but the most important is the responsiveness/fluidity.

apart from that you might as well include the new gametypes that you have created over the years. for example there were some cool gametypes in team arena, but since it was released as a mod, no one wanted to give up the features of osp just to play new gmetypes. but if they are integrated into the base, then they will get played.

on another note my ideal quake game would include all the features from all the quakes (see cpm), but i get the impression this will be more like vq3 on steroids.

and some will even stay at these modes because its fun to have an uncomplicated system sometimes and to eat something with left and shooting with right hand. (3 or 4 good big maps should be enough for the start, yes quakerzero has to support custom maps of course)

core gameplay vq3, voteable: promode gameplay - if there is enough time a voteable quakeworld and quake2 and q4 gameplay maybe even a walljump option.

a custom singleplayer modus with doom1 like monsters:
custom map generator like we know from wolf3d, doom1 (oblige),
sof2, hellgate london, diablo1,2 ::
every map is different and the monsters can be mainly copied out of the old id games.

important!!!: its important to take quake3 as an art example, maybe the old id games too like doom1 or doom2 or q1 or q2.
consistent gfx and sound, models ...
dont mix up things, stay close to original and make improvements on that.
its important all weapons look great, no strange design or too many risks in here

comunity system:
include a custom but optionalbe comunity system - so that means player can use it but do not have to use it !!! that people can play on lan and listenservers too without beeing connected to internet.

but include a comunity system with ratings, tables and anticheat features - this is especially great for online tourneys and comparison of clans and players. and to push more money into quaketournaments in future.

maybe something like blizzard or some famous mmorpgs with close comunity support. but lan has to word without these things too, if even for practice without rankings !

in the official list there is a id for every player which makes it easy to track cheaters, and its easy to send money to the players with paypal or something similar or the other way round. all optionable ofc.

k maybe not all ideas and written in short time

tbh if idsoft likes new ideas there is a final concept of myself, including a quakegame which acts as a roof for all other quakegames. so you can start in the new game all other quakegames in "arenas or small city districts"
a quake mmorpg which acts mainly as the meetingpoint for all quakers. the old games are still in the game without changed rules, gfx or gameplays from doom1 up to quake4.
the whole id universe in one big game and people walking around an slashing monsters like in wow in parties during real duel or ctf setups. (highly downscalable engine and isdn support, like wow for example or guildwars)

Those are obviously A MUST and remember we don't want newbies to be pissed off because of "map not found" errors. Just include all the classics that aren't on the original Q3 installation. Im sure the authors would love to see their creations into an official id game, so theres no problem.

i am quite sure that gameplay wise, qz is going to be great, just spice q3 up alittle in whatever way you feel right, imho the important things are:
- make it fun from the start, it needs to work when its release no endless missing paks, fps issues and what else went wrong in the past (not just in q4)
- bring along tutorial movies and maps so that everyone can enjoy our beloved movement
- it needs to be easy to get in, many new ppl are going to try it because its free, so a good matchmaking and community system is what should make qz stand out

The one thing i would love to see is lots and lots of new maps for 1v1 tdm ctf ra etc...

There is so many custom q3 maps out there. Since qz will be for free can id collect alot of them and package it wih qz? i am not sure what the legality of that would be.

And i have to say that a well implemented match making system is a must.

With this match making system it would be so cool if atleast once a year (qcon for example) have a
"officail" world championchip for QUAKE. But through out the year have a league/qualifiers. Yeah, something like Blizzcon competition. QCON should put a CRAPLOAD of money into a SERIOUS 1v1 tournament (screw RA3, or multigame tournament jokes).

Make the QCON tournament the "official world quake cup". Get qualified admins running the event, put an awesome show with an awesome layout (ala Starcraft MSL). Lots of lighting and loud speakers with these isolating windows for the players, nicely done. Get the interest of every single person attending Quakecon. Advertise it everywhere, hype it since the start of the year until August, and you got it. Other organizations will get interested in QZ, and we can have it in the rest of big events.

Add antialiasing support in the client. I want finally to be able to play on 800x600 resolution with 120hz without any of those jaggies because of the low res. Anisotropic filters would be awesome too.

This is already done in ChallengeQ3.exe.

PD: wtf, just realized anisotropic and antialiasing options are on the menu also using CPMA 1.43 with the original Q3.exe. Wasn't those two "ChallengeQ3.exe only" features?

P.D: Ok, anisotropic and antialiasing options are also on the menu but they are doing nothing if its q3.exe

I'd steal some qw competitive features, chuck some more into the mix and polish.

mvd. not sure if you could get the players to record mvd, sure that isn't possible in cpma.

maybe some game/demo analysis tools.

make it a truly competitive platform

as far as movement etc. wouldn't mess with it, if you feel you have to make it minimal or make different modes a la promode type mode.

weapons - I really like them, maybe nerf the rail a little. and the leave the sounds alone. q4 sounded way too girly for my taste. pew pew pew, yak.

Yeah the timer for specs is a great idea and was just thinking bout a pop up stats board that only covers part of the screen which can be binded to a key.

Game cfg's have to be laid out nice and clear, into sections, ie, net settings, movement, weapons, graphics, etc Maybe with cvars with mini explanations of what it is and what the values means and what range they go through

Separate cfg's for qztv and game modes and make them kept in their own section. I seem to remember cfg's being a hassle. Also settings full changeable in game.

Maybe at a click of a button you can switch through graphics. Say really pretty graphics so when speccing or qztv then for when playing if you want nice plain and clear.

Map editor as standard. Radiant or whatever it is is good.

I like the spawn ghost in cpma, makes it easier to learn them, ofc make it so you can turn it off.

Oh yeah, its been said but make is scalabe.. cod4 is a great example you can dummy it down and everybody can play it. Or you can crank it up and the game looks better than Crysis (imo).

One last thing, keep the level design and textures to Quake 3. The maps looked beautiful and you could see the player models easily against the back drop. One of Quake 4s downfalls was that the base maps especially were so ugly looking and it was hard as hell to see player models. Just a tip... iD, never give another company the rights to one of your game titles.

All I care about is mod support as the base game is likely to be good but also can be vastly improved just not in a way that would be popular with the community, see: cpm.

Also in case it hasn't been mentioned, DEMO FEATURES. Server side MVD, play/pause/stop/rewind/ff/eject (cutting up demos).

Also if you do change the engine at all, PLEASE don't fuck it up, look at Q4, runs like a piece of shit even with low graphics and seriously, seriously doesn't look as good as Q3, so where is all that being wasted?

A large selection of how you see your weapons would be nice too, different lightning gun looks, certain ones geared towards gaming (thin and shit), also fun interesting functional models (like keel/tankjr/sarge).

Just focus mostly on getting the engine up to par, you can have the best gameplay in the world but if the engine is a buggy piece of shit the game will die, learn from Q4's mistakes. Q4 probably isn't that bad of a game any more, you made a few bold choices with stuff like rail damage being lower and ammo counts but none of that matters because for the first year the game wasn't worth playing due to how it ran. Sure we all have better PCs now and it has been optimised (even more so with the recent Q4MAX) but it's too little too late.

leave the movement as it is in q3
fix the bugged physics to emulate the 125fps one as it gives a far better feeling than with 85fps

CPMA features+netcode and some tweaking of hitscan weapons

lots of emphasis on team modes! maps (new and old ones / remakes), stats

qtv and internal support for shoutcasters
would be nice to have a short but comprehensive overview for every map, showing its main areas and flow. this would be especially useful for shoutcasters before an official game and for noobs to have a clue on wtf is going on

tutorials, tutorials and more tutorials!
every tweaking should be possible through gui: i've alyas been a cfg whore, but let's try to take cfging to the minimum
default matchmaking based on guessed skill level

q3 style level design and textures, there's nothing better than the "arena feeling"
the main gamemodes that became standard through the years should be supported ootb

a responsive and consistent sound system
integrated voip, maybe disabled by default, would be nice for clans without having to go ts or vent

One thing that is realy important is for quake zero to have a pub friendly game modes out of the box. Rocket arena is one such mode since it allows people to have fun even if they are not pro at using all the weapons. I've actually managed to get several of my CS playing friends to play that. Would also be nice to see something like attackers vs defenders like in UT/RTCW/TF since it allows everyone to have fun even if they are not very skilled.

I would prefer if the rail damage was brought down to 65 or so and fire rate was increased quite a bit. It would make it a more skilled weapon since sniping wouldn't be as damaging while it would still retain it's power in long range exchanges.

There also needs to be a proper counter to the railgun. One such counter would be to make the machingun a quite powerfull pickup weapon and let the players start out a projectile weapon like a plasmagun with lower fire rate and damage values. If you let players start out with such a weapon, I think 100-120dmg/sec if all shots do max damage would be reasonable. It takes skill to use, but at the same time it should stop opponents from raping newly spawned players with impunity at close ranges. The problem in Q3 and Q4 is that the machingun is only countered by rail at long ranges, which makes it a good weapon if your opponent is far away, but if they get close you have no chance. The properties of a spawning weapon should be the other way around. At the same time it needs to have a slow enough fire rate that newly spawned players can't turn it into a spam fest.

Good netcode and high engine responsiveness is also very important. Especially moving across the top edge of ramps annoys me, since it feels like you are on ice when you hit the top.

- Some basic changes available in graphics - mipmap, picmip, downSize (call it as you want :), shadows, vertex light

Team: Possibility of Adding Badge (ICON) of Team and Players, Team Overlay, Voice Communication, Item Icons for text communication, coach support (Icon of all items in map, you just add time value and post it to your tm8 ;-)

Spectators: Follow Powerup (if there will be more powerups (Quad, Pentagram) auto switch to second if one dies + if set on 2 camera will auto switch to respawn place of powerup ),
Following CamSystem (Q3), Item timers (Q4MAX), Top view of map (ezQuake), Input strokes (Q4MAX).

Shoutcast: possibility to connect from your client to any server and start broadcast with YOURS camera pov and possibility to change views -> Player1, Player2, ..., World + bonus fast replay :)
- possibility to join shoutcast of somebody else to add Czech or Polish language to that English cast :))
- List of currently running games that are possible to watch or soucast, some announcing system to let ppl know, that iam doing some cast.

Demos: Only actual map pack in demo! Server settings in demo. From default, multi view demos stored at server and, possibility to d/l it just after game ends. Demos from official servers available on QuakeZero central site (for a week/month? - to d/l and rate)
Possibility of Demo->AVi,
Possibility of jump in time of demo, speed up, slow down, fast forward & rewind. Possibility of adding shoutcast to already recorded demo.

Maps: Easily recognizable maps. Description and tutorials for maps on website from the beginning. Possibility of building new maps.

Scene: Ladders and mini competitions running on website - possibility to include server brower to any other web, possibility to run your own competition, possibility to run national ladders

4 Newbies: Aim training rooms with ghosts as a tutor, Jump training - show places were you can jump.
- Bots - not needed if there will be players of QZ

Level system: you start as a noob and according to your skill nearest server and "same level" opponent will be found.

Pickups: Included in website, connected to IRC, just click that you want to play and enemy from your region will be found

Competitions: Running automaticly for whole year, best players got payed invitation on QuakeCon :)

Multi server Games: Because servers are usually on BETTER line than players have at home I got this idea.
- Iam on Czech server and my opponent is playing on Dallas server, because servers are on better lines than we have, they communicate between themselves.
Both servers find some Main server, that is in a middle so ping every player have is lower than by direct connection :) (But maybe iam wrong :)

Advertising system: Something, that will allow you to add sponsors logos into arenas before the match will begin or something that could be added into shoutcast.

Involve the scene - There are many great pplz in Quake scene, so let them some space to do work they liked to do something that will be at least as good as Quad Damage and "unite" Quakers.

many players from all skillrange like bots, i have played more games vs bots than humans and have played in good teams.

botsupport is very very important to many people, especially if they are new to games.
the problem you are talking about can be handled in a simple way:

the bots have to be named like it is: the best bot is still noob compared to a real progamer ->

so the namerange has to be replaced:

hardcorebot = bothuman.amateur
nightmarebot = bothuman.fairlygood
spiterbot 60/cpma 80 = bothuman.middlegood
spiterbot 80/cpma 100 = bothuman.good
spiterbot 100 = bothuman.skilled

i know if someone can beat the best cpma bot he can play vs humans upto middleskilled very good in cpm3 (cpma1.43)
if someone is able to beat the spiterbot 100 its really a skilled performance for example on dm6.
bots are a must, its one reason why many games fail. not all people wanna play vs other humans !!!
but bot names like ueberhardcore, nightmare or unhuman like in unreal etc fools the people. then they think they are better than they are ! imo the spiterbot should be included, maybe still the best bot around

I think bots should be based on styles that real gamers have already. Some bots should have excellent aim and slow movement, being great with hitscan weapons but poor with rockets and mediocre timing of items. Another example could be a bot with fast movement and excellent timing skills but poor hitscan aim. This could evolve into bots with good rockets and shaft, or good rail and shaft etc. etc.

I would rather play bots with human-like tendancies than just pure aimbots that try to dodge by spinning in circles :x

Xbox live style achievements(achieve 1200UPS, perform a midair rocket, take out two people with the same railgun shot, etc.)

Small TF2 stats popup stuff at the end the round or after dying('You sent 16 enemies to their deaths before biting the bullet that life!' 'You captured the flag 6 times during that round!'.

Imbalanced weapons(let the level designers balance the guns by placement), with the effectiveness of the guns shown through their sound and the look(for example a really heavy railgun hum, but not so much bass on the grenade launcher or its explosion).

Make it easier to discover the hidden competition style of quake, with a few included demos of very good players playing the various modes, and an easy mode of spectating and easy to find small tournaments with signing up on the spot, all without having to go on irc and looking around for the right channels, or using google for ages.

I don't think thats possible. Think about it, there are only two types of weapons possible. Instant hit, and delayed/projectiles. Everything else is a variations. On the insta-hit side, we have a constant beam LG and weaker MG, a time delayed one-hit RG. For projectiles we have a long delay RL, short delay PG, also GL. And I think that covers the most essential basic types. Anything else is probably a bit gimmicky and takes away from ease of balance and strategical planning of the gameplay. If you want some fun cool weapons, check out Chaos DM for Q2, was absolutely loads and loads of fun with the machine gun torrets you could place in key places, gravity vortexes, air-gun, flameflower, bows'n'arrows with variouse types of explosive errors as well as sickness grenades, etc ,etc, but it wasn't exactly what DM is meant to be.

I dont want fun cool weapons but I'd just like to see something new, like some kind of weaker explosive launcher like rocketlauncher, faster projectile, less delay between bullets, but way less damage, hitscan weapons have railgun wich is a powerfull instagib weapon, and a less powerfull hitscan weapon(shotgun) wich I think is more of a desperation weapon, then theres the mg, wich is the spawnweapon, rather weak, and theres shaft, stronger hitscan weapon.

I would like too see a "weaker version of rocketlauncher" like railgun - shotgun and shaft - mg.

Thats the way I see it, it might work out, it might not, if it doesnt, mappers just shouldnt include it in the maps.

The proposed graphical updates/tweaks sound all well and good, but i hope that they do not greatly change the minimum requirements for the game. New bells and whistles might attract a few people, but the primary reason people are(or are not) going to play this game is if it is fun. The lower the minimum requirements, the more potential people will be able to play, and personally i'm sick to death of all the newer FPS games that are doomed to pathetically small communities from the start due to their system requirements.

I would like to see the whole "community" aspect of the game hosted by the quakezero website. Chat rooms, message boards, team/clan pages, player stats, tournaments. A one stop shop. No need for new players to have to go off and try and figure out IRC in order to get up to speed. The fewer hurdles people have to clear, the more likely they will be to keep playing, and eventually become part of the competitive side of things.

Here are some usage scenarios i'd love to see:

1) New player comes to the website, creates an account, clicks on a "quick play" button, selects the gametype he wants(FFA/CTF/RA3, etc), and either gets a page with a list of pub servers(with ping/players/map etc), or have an auto connect option that finds the best server automatically and launches the game.

2) Slightly more advanced player comes to the site, logs in on his account, wants to play a CTF pickup. Clicks on a "pickup" button, selects CTF(with the possibility for some preferences for server location, quality of opponent, etc), and gets put into a chat room with other players looking for the same. Soon as the room reaches the number of players necessary, the site either checks the pings of people to a number of servers and determines the best one, or gives a list for the people to vote on. The site then connects all the players to the chosen server and automatically assigns teams balanced by the skill level of the individual players(which it knows because the site is tracking all the players stats). At the end of the game all the stats are sent back to the website, and players leaving the game can view the various stat information about the game on the site, and also view overall stats for all the players they just played with/against.

3) Advanced player logs into the site, to play a TDM scrim/match with his team. A room is created, both teams join, and the site checks all players pings to a number of different servers and reports all the data back to both teams, giving a list of servers with average/min/max pings. Both teams decide upon a server, and the site connects all players to the game and assigns teams. After game is finished, the server uploads all stats and a server side multi view demo to the quakezero site. Teams can view stats or download the multi-view demo of the match. If it was a tournament match hosted by the quakezero site, it can automatically log the results.

4) Player logs into the site, and on the main page after login he sees a list of all the major tournaments currently being hosted by the quakezero site. Any tournament matches currently in progress are listed, and with a click the user can be connected to a GTV client that is speccing the game. Results of recent important matches are also listed, and a user can click on it to see a statistical breakdown of the game, and can click on a "replay" link that will automatically launch a demo replay from the match.

The most important thing, especially initially, is that it's easy for new players to sign up and start playing against players of a similar skill level, and not get tossed in with seasoned veterans. You've got a fun game to begin with, and making it free should encourage many new players to try it out. If you can combine that with a great community site that encourages continuing play, and advancing people from newbies up to the competitive ranks, maybe it might be able to challenge the counter-strike hegemon.

- railgun damage has to be lowered to 90-80 & railgun firing should be a little delayed like in Quake2 (so it actually takes skill)

VQ3 is already perfectly balanced for competitive play. Strafejumping is still new to the mass, and still fun to almost everyone playing Q3. Think about the people outside ESR, they will have enought with learning circle jumping, strafejumping, etc, so please, NO gimmicks, keep things pure as they are now. Maybe a railgun decrease to 80 damage makes sense, but please NO gimmicks.

Whoops. this is about a *new* MP quake game, which QZ apparently isn't:
Moving from quake to quake+1 with the exception of Q4 has always been like changing a nice car for a more luxury, tuned, and features one. That is, the basic formula stayed the same but it became more and more refined. Movement felt smoother, more natural and plain comfortable and enjoyable. It's hard to convey why, but that was the impression. Weapons became more/differently balanced, giving each a distinct benefit in each situation and a higher skill ceiling. Maps changed from factories and caves transformed into gaming arenas, and not because of some twisted architecture and unnatural brush topology, but because of how the view opened up with LG when you sneaked into a room and how couldn't position yourself against only one line of attack while waiting for item to spawn. In the end, QZ has got to simply readjust the characteristics and refine the code in a simple. evolutionary, manner and provide a new, fun, playground, so that the game will not simply be more 'perfect' than Q3 was, but freshly addictive and fun.

use the same proportion between player movement/running speed and the size of player models (hitbox) as we have in quake3, else there will be the same problem that d3 and q4 had (q4 in the beginning), it was giving you the feeling you don't move fast enough and then there was the problem with hitting the ceiling with your head when jumping which was pretty stupid

also pt4, ztn, t2 and pdm6 remakes would be ok
if remakes will be shit nobody will play them, so why no remakes?

I just played a duel in the USA on ping 140 and it's amazing how many rails I managed too hit. That's not me aiming all that well, that's netcode + hitbox.

A few more:

- Fixed SG spread?
- Bloodsplatters positioned like in Q4 so they don't obstruct the view and give some information.
- High resolution crosshairs
- Clan system, apart from the friends one. I haven't really toyed with Halo a lot, but as I understand you can have your clan, get ready for a match and then just challenge another one. All eight players join a server (should be a dedicated one in QZ) and play without any hassle.

It has been said, but some "official tournaments" thingie where the web runs a tournament would be great. It would be even better if players could create unofficial tournaments that had their own section. Also, from the official tournaments sections you should be able to spectate matches in progress, watch demos from finished matches and see the brackets / classification. That would be more web traffic, more ads and more money, so make it ! :P

I see a problem with Quake Zero. I don't see where id is aiming to, but I guess they want to see the game in big events, besides being a game played online by millions of people. So, there needs to be a way that you can run the game totally offline, without needing to "log in" at the webpage.

Appart from that, remember there is already announced that a "new Quake Arena game" will be released in the future. This is still far away from today, but we would like to play QZ only until the new Quake Arena is done. This basically means that the more you delay a QZ release, the less time it will be "on the spotlight" regarding big events and competitions, as im sure QZ will be replaced with the new Quake Arena game, kind of overshadowing his little brother (I ofcourse wouldn't care to see both games being played at the same tournament, better than HALO3s or FIFAs), but sadly, this is unlikely to happen.

So, Syncerror, give us an aproximate release date.

ive compared alot ov movements from doom1 upto quake4.
i know many people are underestimating the quake3 movement and how important it is and how much can be done with it or how long you need to master it (e.g. defrag, or some produeldemos)

it is mainly a matter of preferences how players compare movement.
and how deep it is often is blended by how much they like a game or have played it, or lack of real intensive comparison.
i have done many tricks in duel, tdm, ctf maps in qw, q2, q3 and q4.
now why i prefer not adding ramps and double nor crouchjump:
i believe most people are irritated when bodies are behaving like on the moon. its something unexpected and many doesnt like the idea - even the vq3 concept is fast and sometimes unpredictable jumping for some people.
take qw as an example - how often have you tried to show people who are not into a very fast fps game a demo?

vq3 is the borderline(middle in quake) i would say. it can be understandable, is not too fast nor has it too many unrealistic tricks in it.
now what some people are talking in here is maybe the idea of the next "superharcoretrickfps".

there is a reason why vq3 is still so popular, easy to learn hard to master. i dont think qw or q2 or q4 are as easy to learn, and i dont start the discussion of the limit to save our time.
most people will say that zero4, cooller, toxic, purri, griffin, reppie... are all highskilled in their game and all demos are nice to watch.is vq3 movement as deep as others? i think it is nearly the same in all quakes.
do i care? no ! i have decent gameplay in all quakegames and in doom. and i like all idgames - but i do know what a learningcurve is and how jumping can be compared to each other.
q3 is relativly easy to learn and to understand, but the depth is very good too! and it looks realistic which is a point that many people can identify with.
its like running in real life. left right left right, the same like on the keyboard and not moving in air and not jumping 3m high after a ramp or stairs nor sliding on the ground for 2 seconds. easy to think into, although not as easy as mainstream games. its a good middle for me and i tend to say a good middle to have big success.
so why i prefer it? because vq3 can be played by noobs and learned by pros. the vq3 learning curve is close to an ideal for new players and for longtime players.

although there has to be special servers for noobs too. because i dont like the idea that oldschool people will rape everybody.
when q4 was released i watched the servers the first 3 months.
it is not really cool when people who know nothing about quake plays on the same servers like the old fans. i bet most oldschool people would not play on servers labeled as rookies. because they know what to do

after thinking about the future movement of games for a long time i can say the only idea that suits into vq3 is the add of a single(highest 2) walljump like seen in streettrick videos. it can be done and sometimes can help to get to a higher level or around a corner ...
most other suggestions in here from the trickers i think are often personal preferences, not thought some hours about the topic of making quake not the next game in the line but the biggest game that is !

idsoft can add all these features as a vote, i think it shouldnt be that hard with all the sourcecodes around. but NOT as the DEFAULT. vq3 as close as possible - with the possibility to do a realistic walljump (watch streettrick vids to understand my definition) if other people like the idea too. if not then vq3 like always.
about the rail 100 can be debated, its true that rail 40 upto 55 is not that uncommon today in internet. and therefore some people run around only with the rail. dunno im not bad with rail, neither very good. but i think all weapons should be strong:
so what is the thought? think of a real combat situation -
snipers do not shoot with their rifle in near combat.
so it shouldnt be that railers use their rail in all situations because its the strongest weapon in all situations
(reloadtime, only headshot and heartshot are deadly ...)

im not generally against new or old things, but they have to fit in the vq3 concept. the vq3 feeling, i hope some people are now really trying again and comparing again.
vq3 is simple but beautiful, try to get into the idea and feeling.
maybe look at ut3 which has more close to the ground movement now like vq3, i truly believe there is a reason for that (although i dont like the idea of removing the big dodgejump)

and the most important thing of all: dont make q3 another game, dont change too much. the idea is to make it a better game because it already is good ! to make another game out of it could fail misserably if not everybody is knowing what she/he is doing exactly ! (and we know out of the last 5 to 8 years that nobody seems to know what this progaming thing is about)
so stay close to the ground of vq3 pls.

dm6 brigdge to rail is already too hard for many people in a real duel. i can do it 70-90percent of the time i guess. but why do i know so many people who cant do it or even more poeple who will never learn it ? make it alittle bit easier again like in osp.
and t2 jump should be doable again too.

why ? because its important to have those maps in the starting pack. how would q0 look if mostly all starting maps are worse than the known maps of the other quake games?
this doesnt mean that they have to be played in official tournaments in the beginning. this is only a building ground !!!
people who wanna get right in the action can play and test quake0 with their old maps like always. and provide fast suggestions and fast support on the engine,maps and errors.
tbh i even go as far as providing ALL important old quakemaps from every quake, maybe even the most known wolf3d doom1 and doom2 maps! e1m1,dm4,q2dm1...
but still with the known vq3 maps for hardcore players (because we all know oldschool qw or q2 players will always like the maps in their old games better)
but q0 should be both for fun AND for pro.
ofc progaming as the maingoal, otherwise the goal is too low. the old quakes are already very good - this has to be even better !

That was good. I agree in VQ3 being the most balanced gameplay, being on "the middle". Not realistic physics, fast physics, but not car racing physics (QW, CPM physics). Again, easy to learn, hard to master.

Remember we want to make this Quake the bigger (in terms of fanbase) Quake, not the next Quake, leave that for Quake 5 Arena. Stick with Q3 and work on all the extra things to make newbies start playing the easiest way possible.

Players use the movement as much as they can. Just because you want to use 70% of it, it doesn't mean we'll cap it @ 70 because then the players who can and want to use 100% of it won't be able to. Same applies to all 'advanced' features in a game. You don't want to use them? Fine, others however, do.

why am i convinced about how strong q3 is:

=if i had played all pickups, tournaments i knew of this
year in q3, this would have been an 8h job

=every year including 2007 there were big and famous q3lanstourneys with nice players in it and hard competition

and whats whith all the quake3 channels in irc? there are several hundreds people around in them overall. many people are only in 1 or 2 quake3 channels but still playing.

maybe you are talking that quake3 is not as strong as starcraft or counterstrike, but with a very good quakezero its only a matter of time if you ask me till q3 is on the top of the world.

Don't use traductions of any kind, specially of the announcers. Force everyone to stick with the classic Q3 announcer, the other ones sound simply ridiculous. Also, you want to make the terms known everywhere the same (ie, a quad damage is a quad damage, regardless the language you talk). Just like in Corea they refeer to Starcraft units in original english, but not on Corean. That kind of stuff sounds better in english, thats it.

- not-buggy movement
- extra maps included like f.e. ztn3tourney1 (if authors allow it of course)
- web portal like Yrim explained above. Perhaps it would be a good idea to rate players from level 1 to 10 also. You can only increase your level by playing opponents who are as good or better than you.
- perhaps limit the amount of graphics tweaking. I would love to play q3 with full gfx settings but disabling everything is just so more advantageous.

for me theres no question: all modern clients and mods are highly customizeable. its because people want the game to behave and look how they like it. there only has to be a way to decide from which point it is or can be considered a cheat !

Just to throw my two cents in:

I think the GUI of qw client ezQuake is one of the best things i have ever seen and I would love to find something like that in q0.*
Especially config.cfg import and export, !!! the ladder one is really sweet because it's all put into a beautiful order. This is important to give unadvanced players easy access to config tweaking.

*(Probably should put an "advanced options" button somewhere that makes massive customization options accessible, so new players don't get scared or overwhelmed when the first enter the options menu.)

make public as fast as possible some alpha version with editor included so there will be many maps available at the release
if you want to make the game noob friendly you must include tons of big maps to support more players
you should maybe add one or two strong weapons (with similar effects like the bfg) and put the weapons in most of the bigs maps to let the noobs make frags
include some class players like class-noob :D with 200 health and 200 armor and 15% faster movement

Another little suggestion: apart from the numbers, bind by default the weapons around the movement keys (at least rocket, rail, shaft and plasma in qefc, since the first four ones are above wsad anyways). That simple change can mean a lot to a newb. Maybe change the crouch key too to something more suitable nowadays, like CTRL.

GTV should be appealing to newbies :

1) it should have its own filter in the server browser (� la q4 but improved, at least having a description -q4 just having an enygmatic icon)

2) a way should be found to separate "gtv diffusing joe vs bob match on a random server" from gtv diffusing important esport matches.

Maybe id could just use (with permission of course) the code used to create mods that already have the features everyone is talking about. Like CPMA netcode, etc...

That way they id can spend their time building up features which no mod currently offers (matchmaking, better graphics) rather than fixing bugs from Q3base that have already been fixed and implementing things we are asking for which have already been coded about 10 times.

Re: Collisions on patch meshes.
As we know in q3 the actual collision mesh on curves is on quite a low LOD - often blocking what looks like a clean shot at low r_subdivision values.
PB typically blocks the "good" value that shows patch meshes as they would collide, but you can't educate the server admins about that. It would be really nice to have a real solution to this. (Tech4's "no LOD on patch meshes" policy comes to mind).

If you're going to re-run bsp/light/vis etc on the maps, some lightmap filtering � la Q3Map2 would be nice.

Smooth dynamic lights, the big pixelated blob is so last century :)

Q3 had 3D positional audio some time ago. It'd be nice to have some again (mm, back/front filtering), just as long as it's not a direct port of D3/Q4's ;)

Fixed movement physics with 125hz feeling. Other than that, pretty much VQ3, maybe <100dmg rail. Dare I suggest the hitboxes become 8-sided axis aligned ? (and hopefully it doesn't break some parts of movement as that did in Q4).

"Protected" demo playback, CPMA-style. Bonus points for an actual pause function :)

Clan Arena is good for newcomers.

And if you're only gonna have one osp/cpma feature : timeouts. OK, two features : warmup and timeouts. :)

I know a lot of people have been saying that autodownload should be on and so on, I personally think there should be a common repository where the maps and mods can be acquired.

Image the following scenario: I click on a server that I want to join (or a "play CTF pickup in California"-button or whatever on a homepage) . I then get a dialog which tells me that I am lacking mod A and map B and the dialog shows me several URLs where I can acquire these. On the dialog there might also be a list of other maps that the server has.

Another thing I'd like to see is the possibility to use mods together - mods that doesn't overlap (does not use the same files) should be possible to use together. Maybe even be able to load installed mods on the fly with clients ON the server, instead of each mods having to implements all other mods to have their separate feature.

Big minus on it, cf TurkeyFiles going offline and there suddenly being NO way to get missing files "in" the game. Okay, so it's Q4 and that had more than enough problems with downloads/addons/etc anyway, but a single point of failure that DOESN'T properly fall back to "download it off the poxy server that's insisting I get it in the first place" is a really really bad idea.

Incidentally, Q3 autodl is "bad" for a very strange reason - it's capped by *sv_fps* and by a "secret" 1100-ish byte limit ON each snap, which is why it's a miserable 30K/s absolute max even on LAN (and, obviously, typically far far less than that). I got it up to around 220K/s by poking at it a bit in CNQ3, which is pretty decent, but a "proper" sideband for it would definitely be the way to go.

I wish I could have kept TurkeyFiles going but I couldn't afford the $1k per month + bandwidth bill. It may not be a problem for id since this will be advertising based and they can afford the bill. All they need is a cheap Cogent line for it. Internap for bandwidth, while great for game servers, would be overkill for a file server system.

It would be cool if id could make some sort of file repository system along with perhaps a sorta torrent system as well -- so bandwidth isn't so much an issue. Perhaps where all game servers contribute a little bit and either round robin or it does a multiple bits of file transfer from various sources (i.e. like what those download accelerators did -- file transfer from multiple sources at a once, but only a little bit from each). And/or people could volunteer http redirect mirrors and get priority advertising space.

A few more that haven't been said:

- Proper custom aspect ratios support (or, at least, 16:9, 16:10 and 5:4).
- Thinner shaft or a thinshaft option.
- Compressed demos
- Let us completely disable rewards, including sound, but add one for midairs (rockets and grenades) and maybe change impressives to trigger at three consecutive hits or two consecutive hits in less than x seconds.

Another great option would be the one that Virtua Fighter 5 has on the japanese arcades: the ability to download a video in wmv format of a specific match. Imagine how cool would be for a new player to play a match and then, a few minutes later, be able to download it in a format he can upload to Youtube or whatever and show to his friends.

I know it isn't the same to put a 2 minute VF5 fight than a 15 minute duel or 20 minute ctf match, even though they limit it to three fights a week I think, but it could be just a tool implemented into the client that lets you choose a certain demo and converts it into a popular video format, with all the eyecandy and with HUD elements that fit the low quality of popular video upload sites and with the usual 3 second introduction "Quake Zero, get it FREE at www.quakezero.com". Even better, give people some presets like Youtube - big HUD elements, no crosshair, split in 10 minute parts; Stage6 - widescreen, smaller HUD, tiny crosshair; etc...

There is no better promotion for a game than to have Youtube flooded with videos of it.

Quake 3 is an excellent game. I don't think you need to change it much. Maybe add some new characters and new maps. If your going to make new maps, perhaps you could have more players in each map? 32...ish?
It would be nice if there were some sort of rating system, so that players of similar ranking could play against each other, as everyone hates playing in an arena where one person owns everybody else. Plus you could compare yourself to others, with such a ranking system.

Quake Zero is an excellent idea. Using advertising as a way to pay for or subsidize cost of production could really change things, if it's done correctly!

vq3 hit the perfect balance of having newbie appeal and still being a fairly 'pro' game imo, it was fun for new people to get into and just jump around shooting but also made an excellent tournament game as is shown by its tourney play going on 8 years now. games like qw and cpma are a bit too hardcore i think to make the base game built off of and will not attract new players which ultimately this whole project is trying to do.

there are things that are absolutely essential for both the new players and hardcore. for the new players this is accessibility: matchmaking, a good pub server mode that they can just jump in and play (clan arena), spiffed up graphics but low system reqs, and standardization. for a new player to check the server browser and see every server running a different map and mod they'd have to get and config elsewhere its a huge turnoff, these things need to be made in such a way that its easy for people to join any server and be aware of the changes from the base gameplay are there, if any.

the things for the hardcore include changes that usually take up to a year to receive in patches and mods: timeouts, readyup etc, good demo support, qztv, good netcode (cpma), custom hud suport and things like that. there was a post above about gtv needing to be easier for new people and i agree completely, you shouldnt have to join and then use console commands to get around while staring at a box map, make it so it has its own gui to view and select games.

new content like some new maps, models, rewards etc would be nice but is not essential and is hardly in the same ballpark as the things needed above. it should be behind all those things in priority because the q3 community over the years has generated tons of new content like maps and models that could be used to add some freshness to the game.

i hope everyone from all the different quake-sub communities can put aside their differences regarding gameplay and help make qz what it was meant to be: a free version of quake 3 that will help get quake some more players and lead us into the new quake arena game which could use those gameplay inputs.

it's always nice to see where the players are from and it can fuel quite a competition based on national pride.. (frenchies team up with some belgians to take on some krautz, ww1 all over again).
custom flags not allowed since people would abuse this to hell.. assign flags to Zimbabwe or the People's Republic of Congo

Quake3 gameplay is really bland.

i understand you don't want to mess with the formula too much, but some little things would spice it up without alienating Q3 fans while making it fun for other people too.

all i'm requesting for is:
- Quake2 double-jumps
- Quake2 ramp jumps (not as high like in Q4)
- railgun damage decreased to around 80

these two movement techniques i'm proposing aren't at all difficult, yet they provide a lot of gameplay variety when coupled with competent map design.

I mean we could put down the pro's and the con's of having or not a better turning ability than in vq3 (which is pretty poor, right ?)
I'll start :
-turning is great, it allows you to change direction. as simple as that. (I mean the turning kind "without losing speed, not using a wall -bumping into, aka "I'm totally dependant of map's architecture"-, and having a large turning angle")

so, your turn : any argument against having a better turning ability in q0 than in vq3 ?

just wanted some nice options to see demos some recams and if possible be able to wander in the game while demo is going and re-record it again only with that part that i wanted andif possible cut paste demos as video clips ( dunno if its possible)
being able to pause demos ( it as been said) its great.

a sound system equal to q3 but please dont do it like q4 because it sucks :P

Why do people think quake will go 'mainstream' ? It never has in the same sense as halo or half life and most likely never will. Why don't we just cater q0 for quake players as opposed to the hordes of newbs that will rush on to servers (hypothetically).

Short tutorials for each game mode (timing items in TDM, positioning in CTF etc), movement and weapons. 1 sec delay on railgun firing like Q2.. In-between q3 and q4 speed (movement, rockets), rockets should be same size as q3, not nukes like in Q4, shaft should be like the q4 shaft imo.. Oh, and let me change m_pitch and fov pls :D

-Tweaking the weapon balance. Such as lowering the RG damage! Perhaps even the LG to a degree. Also fixed SG spread pattern.
- New maps! If possible get with some of the mappers in the community that have proven themselves to make fantastic maps for these quake'n games. I'm sure many of them would love to be a part of this project.
-In depth setup menu. It should be easy for even a first time player to set up their config to exactly how they like it. HUD changes, crosshair/color/size changes, perhaps even set it up so that you can set up your binds to have multiple effects with in the menu. Ie crosshair/sensitivity changes per weapon binds.
Perhaps even include multiple config/accounts. Load up a friends config and tweak it, re-load up your regular config and if you were to go back to your friends config the tweaks would still be their as they were loaded into that specific config file. This way you can have multiple configs on one PC/game and be able to change each one up with out having to go into the folders and pull out a microsoft word file with a bunch of commands. All in all, not that imporant.. just an after thought.

They could tie configs to accounts. That way you can log in into another PC and have (almost) everything as if you executed your config.

You could even go to the webpage, click on someone's profile and try his config.

Another idea: statistics like in TF2, leaving the negative stats out.

Don't be so sure about that. The niciest thing about QZ will be that any PC with internet can go to the webbrowser and start playing. So, imagine going to uni and start playing with your config in no time (well, the first time will take a bit since you have to download the game), or going to any netcafe in the world, you can play it aswell, etc.

Gear the game towards TDM, 1v1, and Clan Arena. Play down FFA as much as possible, it's a dying gametype. Most popular games these days are team games.

I would say in order to make TDM in Q0 stand up to competition today then i would say that the spawning weapon in TDM needs some serious reevaluation. MG is okay for 1v1/ffa i guess, but TDM needs something weaker. if you want quake to become popular you need to fix the issues with TDM becoming all cess and rush quad.

I'd say make Clan Arena the default server gametype in the cfg, not FFA. FFA in Q3/4 is not fun and there are always going to be more of the default setup for pubbie servers, which are really important here.

1) q3 tdm blows and has blown since day 1, i'd rather play q1/q2 tdm or q3 clan arena
2) this game needs to bring quake to the new audience mass audience of gamers if the series wants any hope of a future and noobs these days play console fps games that play best in 4v4, so give them a good 4v4 game

yes CA is definitely in its own world but that world is one of aim aim aim. you cannot possibly begin to grasp the intricacies of fast dm gameplay if you cannot aim for shit. CA is the most forgiving gametype and that why I suggest it be the default because all it will affect is pubs that we dedicated quakers will never join anyway. i have attempted to introduce quake to a lot of people but all they see in the ffa gameplay is "run forward and shoot until you die" because their aim is so horrible they can't even begin to understand the game on any other level. the only way i managed to get them to remotely enjoy the game is to play it in RA/CA mode and even that was pretty discouraging

Dude, CA just gives people nasty habits whereas FFA gears them towards ctf, duel and tdm

CA is in a universe to itself whereas the discredited FFA instills dm sensitivities to new players, i.e to the skillset needed.

I always thought it to be a rather good pub game. It, more then any other mode in quake is similar to many of the other team based shooters that are popular these days. You start off at your base with your team around you, weapons are usually not hard to get and the objective is simple. If you die no biggie since frag count isn't the concern.
Movement wise quake3 isn't so hardcore that it would completely cripple a game for those who cant strafe jump very well or at all. But then again the last handful of CTF games I've played were in CPMA and warsow so perhaps my perception is skewed.(and for what it's worth I'm not really a fan of ctf in either of those game modes, esp wsw)
If it is team organization then or to be specific the lack of it and the effects on the gameplay for random pub games.. Well I don't see why it would be that much more of a concern then say TDM...
Which actually gives me an idea. Built in audible messages to bind. I believe a few games have this now. Perhaps have it setup in the menu so that the ctf msg binds only work in ctf gamemode, same thing for tdm ect ect.

Anyhoo enough rambling, just my opinion. :)

A tdm/ctf gather (kinda like a irc pickup) for equally skilled ppl on the quake zero page where ppl can add themself and the system finds one that matches their skill/ping or opens a new one (or smth like that). But i hope that one is already in work/finished ;p

One of the games you should look at for ideas is Supreme Commander. They managed to implement a number of the things you have talked about already. They have a web interface with a chat looby with the ability to create channels. They have a ranking system, built in ladder system and match making. All in all it seems to work well.

One of the things I like the most though is the replay vault system. The replays upload to a central server library that allows anyone with the game to view them. You have the option of retaining copies on your system or you can just view them from the online repository whenever you like.

If you took that concept and combined it with a system of player stats with global ranking and stats ala ETQW crossed with MaxStats/VSPstats with stats for the player that are local and serverside along with some level of global stats system...... \0/ ftw. Also, the stats would need to be available to render from replays/demos.
