Feels different or you actually measured it different?

someone please elaborate on the connection between hunkmegs and sensitivity. How is the amount of ram dedicated to QL affecting the sensitivity?

i use some accel and when i use high hunkmegs value it feels smoother. i actually donīt want that. itīs weird but lower hunkmegs "feels" like more friction. i hit flicks better and shaft is easier to hold on target. hard to describe the whole thing. same with r_mode. res to me has influence on aim and feel of the setup. and i use 640x480.

i havenīt measured anything. so no hard facts. but it feels a bit faster and probably is faster. like 1-2 inch on a 360 turn. which for me would be 10% or smtn.

but that can be mainly attributed to the fact that QL runs more smoother in general. Try to play QL with like 50-60fps and your mouse movements will feel shopped of and really unsmooth. However, it won't necessarily interfere with the with the calculation of the accel/sens or how accurate it is; it just feels more accurate with higher hunks/because ql feels more smooth?

ok, here is what i believe hunkmegs do for me:

back in osp or cpma..i donīt really remember i was on a low sens mid accel and i also used high hunkmegs because i freaking read it in some pro configs. my mistake was to believe what is good for them is good for me. i recall it beeing fox or noctis or whomever. but these players donīt use accel basically. high hunkmegs made my accel feel faster. cypher even used to use lower than standard 56 hunkmegs. i believe it was 48 or something. look up his configs 2-3 years ago.

edit: notice, these are 3 years old cpma cfgs, still the standard value was "56" so what reasons do you have to change standard? ...heīs on placebo, too? ...i dare you tell him that

i have no idea to be honest. let's investigate.

i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that id discovered that changing hunkmegs in q3 had some unforseeable consequences and decided to lock it in quakelive, i don't have anything to prove that though.

some players never made a true ql config, but lazily copied over half their cpma ones, with cypher being one of them. if you want a proper ql config, go with those who set up a clean config in ql, like fox or noctis.

edit: players who are good at quake are not necessarily good at editing their configs, for most it's quite the opposite. just because cypher or cooller had something in their configs 3-4 years ago does not mean anything, really.

If hunkmegs is now locked, my guess would be is that id got bored of telling people not to fiddle with hunkmegs, and so locked it at the lowest value that works with QL. As they have control over what maps etc are loaded, it shouldn't be necessary for a user to raise it.

If you set it too low, you'll get things failing because it runs out of hunk memory.

If you set it too high (excessive values), you can get out of memory trying to allocate the hunk.

If you set it up higher than necessary, it just wastes system RAM, which could degrade performance if you have other processes running that use lots of memory.

Like other posters, I cant see any link between this and mouse settings, other than general system performance.

hunkmegs isnīt locked, i can feel a big change in mouse feeling from different values. as abovious as changing my polling rate of the usb port. i use 125 hz, i donīt set it to 500 or whatever. maybe if i did, the hunkmegs value would not have as much of a difference. no idea

it doesnīt mean anything...but i can feel a difference from the values. i use hunkmegs 56 and it feels different on my wheel mouse optical.

find some way to measure it, doesn't q3 atleast have a mousespeed cmd? i don't care too much about "feeling", atleat use a ruler and tell us by how much it is different.

maybe not masureable. it just feels different. lets go with that. the little flicks while shafting overshoot. lowering sens? not an option. iīm happy anyway. my setup feels comfy. i have to do some things like minding the monitor res, com_hunkmegs, m_yaw and pitch, m_filter, r_swapinterval, accelpower, senscap, acceloffset, in_restart

but other than that its all easy peasy.

And yeah, hunkmegs is just telling the engine how much RAM to use, there's absolutely no way that its affecting sensitivity at all.

It doesn't make sense but I've had things like this happen. On my old system (Pentium II) when I played quakeworld and set -heapsize to some high number it would change the feel of the mouse dramatically. I want to say that it made it smoother / neg accel'd.

When I upgraded and tried the same experiment, I got no effect. No clue what was actually going on there but I can't help but wonder if he wasn't experiencing something similar in q3/hunkmegs.

Hard to believe this could exist in Quake Live though, especially on modern hardware.

There's also the problem of how nowadays in Quake Live you cannot change hunkmegs or zonemegs, only soundmegs.

A new value will latch, but it will never take effect.

I have it in my cfg because I used to get hunkmegs errors, and it worked then.. Dunno about now, but I'm not taking it out.

i can certainly feel a difference when i go to com_hunkmegs "96" from "56". do vid_restart or/and in_restart after. doesnīt matter what the console says

I also ran some tests with this. Windows does not report the game changing its memory usage at all, which would seem to indicate that if there is an effect it is not related to a change in hunkmegs.

**Crude placebo config for testing**:

If you don't require a vid restart each time, you can do is something like bind PGUP "com_hunkmegs 256 ; in_restart" and bind PGDN "com_hunkmegs 96 ; in_restart".

Then press each key simultaneously a bunch of times. Run around a bit and try to guess which setting it is on. After some running around check the console and see if you were right or not.

Take note if your guess was correct or not, then run the test again. Do at least 10 trials and see if you can test better than 50%.

If you cannot you can be sure that the placebo effect is rearing its ugly head.

Well you are going to have to do better than this if you want any hope for a solution.

my sens is also screwed up. last week it was all normal, but starting yesterday my sens feels slower then it should be, i did in_restart and didn't help as well. is it just a placebo or actual game bug?

when i up the sens for a few points then it feels like it should be tho.

when i just start a game in ql, (i have a autoexec linked to my cfg) and then do in_restart it definately feels different. i donīt like it, my weapon handling is worse with it.

i noticed different sensitivity/aiming when adjusting hunkmegs and soundmegs too, back when i played rtcw. it seemed when i raised it by a fair amount then aiming was overly smooth and slippery. it's probably just a matter of getting used to it but i never could so i always used default hunkmegs and soundmegs after that.
