I have 171 and have never had any problems...

i can't tell exactly since i've never reached that limit but it must be true since i heard it couple of times.

I think that only additional paks count.

Can anyone explain for what is the limit good for?

The limit is MAX_PURE_PAKS, and counts the number of pk4's in the "pure" list of the server. Those that are on the "pure" server are the ones that players need to download to play.

If addon.conf functionality is working correctly, there should only be *one* map pk4 which is referenced at any given time, assuming mappers are putting the addon.conf's in the pk4s. Add to that the 20ish id ones, 2 q4max ones, and you've got around 100 unused slots for "old" maps that don't have an addon.conf.

AFAIK, There is no problem with the client having more than MAX_PURE_PAKS, which I guess is confirmed by you having 170+.

IMO, there should never be a server online that has > 128 pk4's actually required to play - you'd be looking at over 500Mb of custom data required to even connect to the server.

(caveat: addon.conf doesnt work great, so you do end up with more than one addon.pk4 on the pure list.... IMO the correct solution is to fix this, rather than simply up the limit, as the limit is already fairly sane)

This is just an incredible map. Gorgeous and plays wonderfully.

I think you make some pretty damn good mp stuff (your recent SP was good too) and the fact that you are one of the few that continues their work despite some people not knowing they exist yet (I know i was at your site about a week ago before this was posted seeing that you had a few maps that hadn't been posted here or doom3world) is real cool. In short, hire this man.

Thanks a lot TelMarine. I make maps because, to me, it is one of the coolest things in the world. I love the challenge and I love to learn new things, which I subsequently try to incorporate into each new level. So for me, it is all worth it.

When people appreciate my stuff, it makes it that much better :)

Just hire the q4max team, they would've done by far a lot better job with q4 than Raven Software did. :)

Not to mention that they're saving your ass for nearly 3 years now - competition wise.

id knows that their ass will be saved competition wise though. Thats why they don't bother making the base Quakes competition friendly.

i'll doubt that because id software is losing credibility and respect everytime they mess up with a new release.
Of course i don't know their finances but i don't think they made the big $ with q4. + Many "fans" are dissapointed about id now.

Well.. they still made a lot of money off of Q4 due to the fact that Quake has had so much success in the past.

A lot of companies do count on mods to make there games better. I doubt id imagined Q3 would of been popular if no one ever created a mod for it. Even setting up a clan match on baseq3 or baseq4 would be a huge pain in the ass.

Edit: It wasn't the lacking of competition features that made Q4 bad back in 2005. It was the fact that the strafing was slow, the game preformed bad online, and there was lots of bugs.

I think somewhere I've read that id did make some money off q4, but all those who bought it did that only for the singleplayer :(.

Hy phantazm11, think maybe you could make some new duel maps for q4. We have many yes. But with the 1.4+ patches; the new speed + old duel maps just arent as fun as they used to be.
I know most of your maps are good, so if it wouldnt be too much trouble I'd love to see what you could come up with for some good 1.4.2 dueling maps.
I would attempt to do it myself but i know nothing about mapping and dont really have interest in doing so. Only wish there were better flowing maps for q4 1.4.2.
Anyways, Im just asking, but certainly would be awesome if you could.

My game crashes when I wanna create a server with that map running :X

in the .pk4 (can be opened with winrar), copy what's inside addon.conf (exept the line "addonDef {}") and paste it in def/phantq4dm8.def (replace all)
erase addon.conf in the .pk4
