Quake 3 Map Statistics: October 2008 (39 comments)
Posted by cYmoZz @ 18:24 UTC, 30 July 2008 - iMsg
I made a little statistic how well the top players did on the different maps. I considered every player who attended at least two of the big Q3 events in 2008: eswc ESWC Masters Paris, GameGune, eswc ESWC Finals or eswc ESWC Masters Athen.

Top 5 on each map (min. 4 games on the specific map):

"player name" "number of wins" / "number of matches"

ZTN is the only map which is not removed on a regular basis by all listed players.
Only a few players seem to feel comfortable on all maps.

There might be some errors, if you find one, please post it.

Interview with Noctis (46 comments)
Posted by Nukm @ 11:36 UTC, 22 July 2008 - iMsg
As i am really psyched about GameGune, i decided to IM some of the fascinating individuals that frequently visit here, to ask some short questions.
Austria noctis already replied this morning [+], so here we go:

In your memorable interview with DDK, you said that you were pleased with your ESWC Placement (5th-8th), do you still feel the same about it and what does your new team 4K think about your performance?

noctis: I hope nobody remembers that interview. I am pleased to reach my goal of placing top8, but after the game vs fox i was a bit disappointed because it could have been top4. My manager pretty much thinks the same thing afaik. ;)

Moving on, how did you prepare for GameGune?

noctis: I played 3-4 maps with Spartie on monday.

Three weeks ago you faced fox in the ESWC Masters Quarter-Final and lost although you were able to win dm6 and give the swede a hard time on hub. Do you think you can do better in your upcoming group match against him?

noctis: As it seems the group games are only bo2 and i have no idea how the map selection works i am hoping to reach a 1-1, but im not too confident atm.

Do you fear any of the other players in group A? What do you expect from Krysa?

noctis: I don't fear any player. Krysa might give me a run for the playoff spot and with bo2 who knows whats gonna happen. :/

If you manage to get in the double elimination Bracket, what are your expectations?

noctis: I don't think that far ahead when its even unsure that i make it out of the group, i will try to give my best and see where i end up.

Who do you think is going to win GameGune?
noctis: fox or av3k, hoping for fox tho.

Thanks for your time and good luck! Anything you wanna add?
noctis: GO FOX!

#Q3TDM - 2v2 Tournament Tonight! (2 comments)
Posted by oneroomdisco @ 18:36 UTC, 10 May 2008 - iMsg
A new channel (#Q3TDM) has been created on Quakenet, and over the course of a few days, it has hit 60+ people. It now has a running echbot, where you can add to play pugs for 2v2 and 4v4. This is mainly a North American channel, made due to the lack of team play channels for VQ3 Quake 3.

If you would like to watch, or better yet, join in on this event please join #q3tdm on Quakenet by clicking here.

So please help a growing community by joining in and playing!

Also, this weekend we will see the first small tournament run by #q3tdm, a 2v2 tournament. The map list will be pro-q3dm6, q3dm7, ztn3dm. This is a tournament without any prizes, just for fun, and to see how well it will run.

Bracket Is Up

Major Q3 duel tournaments since 2000 (25 comments)
Posted by xou @ 06:35 UTC, 7 February 2008 - iMsg
Since December 1999 when Quake 3 was released, many duel tournaments have been organised on that title. Then it was declared a dead platform for real competitions after a few, but really busy, years (excepted in Russia and its neighbourhoods where the legend will probably live until the end of time or Asus). WCG, ESWC and CPL abandonned the game and tried to move on with newer video games. After the annoucement of QuakeLive by ID Software, the guys from ESWC thought it would a great idea to revive Quake 3 for one more big duel cup in 2008.

As any good nerd, I decided that it would be a good opportunity for a quick review of the MAJOR DUEL Q3 Tournaments held since 2000. With the help of the Quake Tournament History Timeline, the internet and coffee, I found exactly what I wanted to build the following list. My criteria were quite simple: decent cash prizes, decent players, LAN only, and more than 3 countries represented.

- 2007

- 2006

- 2005

- 2004

- 2003

- 2002

- 2001

- 2000

ESR Interviews Andy Reif CEO of CGS (74 comments)
Posted by Nicky @ 08:13 UTC, 19 September 2007 - iMsg
With the UK and EU combines for CGS taking place this coming week, ESReality took the chance to interview Andy Reif CEO of CGS. The interview took place via Skype and has been transcribed word for word.

Questions include:
"The whole e-Sports scene started of with PC games like Doom and Quake. Seeing that Quake was actually used in your highlight reel why haven’t you included the game is it because they maybe to violent and gory?"

"There are lots of titles coming out, we’ve got Unreal Tournament 3, Quake5, Call of Duty 4, so obviously you’ve already answered this one and you’ll be looking at these as possible future CGS titles is that correct?"
Read on for the full interview ......

ZDaemon Overview (185 comments)
Posted by peterg @ 21:35 UTC, 7 May 2007 - iMsg
Few gamers probably know about ZDaemon, and probably even less have tried it. Here's a look at a game flying under the radar.

ZDaemon is client/server based on Doom 2 which is most similar to the Quake series than any other game. It shares many weapons(SG, SSG, RL, plasma, chaingun, etc), and even some engine tricks on movement(wall running, strafe tricks). ZDaemon has very low system requirements, and decent unlagged netcode(56kers/sub 200 pingers are fairly competitive). It comes with a custom server browser which has built in chat, buddy system, server favorites, and a nice autodownloader to find all the files you need to play on servers. ZDaemon doesn't require extensive config editing nor is it as aim based as most modern DM games.

Gaming Commentator Revealed : djWheat (95 comments)
Posted by A_Spec @ 00:07 UTC, 21 March 2007 - iMsg
With the renewed interest in game commentating I have decided to do a short series on the part of the gaming world that doesn’t get much coverage; The gaming commentators.

We hit off the series with an in depth interview with iTG3 Radio iTG United States of America Marcus “djWheat” Graham. What makes him the legendary caster that he is? What is his story? Read on and find out.
Netherlands A_Spec
So tell me, who is djWheat? How did you become a game commentator? Was there a particular reason? Or did you just want to try something new?

United States of America djWheat
I think by now most everyone knows the story about how I became a game commentator... I basically lied my way into TsN, and found out that I had some skills. But the real reason I was ABLE to become a game commentator is probably because of my passion for games.

When I first started, I had no idea that it would turn into what it is today (a full time position as a game commentator and show host), so I took it with a grain of salt. It wasn't until I did this for nearly 4 years as a hobby that I was finally able to make something of it... that in itself shows my dedication for gaming and my passion for competitive gaming.

Razer DeathAdder Review (565 comments)
Posted by Sujoy @ 23:00 UTC, 8 January 2007 - iMsg

Update: There have been two problems reported by ESR readers with some Razer DeathAdder mice. Firstly some DeathAdders continue to track even when lifted off the mousepad by a large distance (over 10mm). Secondly there is a small amount of positive mouse acceleration created by the mouse drivers. We are looking into both of these problems to find out why, and how to solve them.

Update 2: Most problems have been fixed with the latest firmware. For full details please view this thread:

WCG Quake 4 Invite Preview (110 comments)
Posted by ReDeYe @ 20:03 UTC, 16 October 2006 - iMsg
The World Cyber Game in Singapore last year was almost as good as it gets in terms of how video gaming should be presented, but there always felt like something missing, despite the fantastic time I had and the amazing spectacle that is the WCG Grand Finals.

That something was of course the lack of a death match game, specifically a 1v1 FPS game and when the announcements were made for this years games I have to confess to feeling a little upset at the lack of inclusion for a second year.

There are many things I admire about the WCG and the people behind it, one of which is their ability to listen and react to what the gamers really want. I should not therefore have been surprised when WCG contacted us at ESReality to help promote, choose and run the Quake 4 WCG invitational tournament.

Whilst it might not have made it to the qualifiers and that will certainly exclude some of the big names in Quake 4, we do have eight fantastic players, chosen by the community on ESReality.com who will do battle, not just for the cash, but for the ultimate in prestige. Every single player knows that to have “WCG Champion” attached to their CV is the greatest accolade in gaming and all of them will be going all out to make sure they end the tournament as champion.

Eight players, 1 championship, who has the brain, the aim and the conviction of their gameplay to be crowned World Cyber Games Champion 2006?
