Hitscan only weapons is far far away from arena shooter. Nothing gives more juice than RL prediction.

I actually thought this was pretty interesting. I'd have to say "no, it's not an arena shooter" but it's certainly closer to one (and a whole lot more compelling than anything CoD has done for a long time).

To me though, iron sights don't belong in an arena shooter. You can't have an arena shooter with that much hitscan. You can't have an arena shooter with environments that open. You can't have an arena shooter with such a low time-to-kill.

It also takes a pretty simplistic view of arena shooters. Yeah, if you wanted to compare it to something like a QW/Q3 Free For All match, that CoD would probably be fun for a lot of the same reasons. But there's more depth to things like pickups and powerups and timing and control and prediction than he seems to appreciate.

Still, I'd probably put a couple of weeks in to it (if Reflex didn't exist).

A couple of weeks is generous. I'm glad they are heading towards more arena style games but I dont think I could play it for more than 2 hours

specifically I couldnt play it for all the reasons you said it wasnt an arena shooter. Low ttk, hitscan, machine guns, open maps

I do hope people start craving this type of style in their games though

this was the big part of the appeal of these games to start with and this has shifted immensely over time. at first, they were the most visceral and exciting experiences around - in terms of gameplay and visuals. however, games have come a long way since then, and hitting a midair rocket or rail pales in comparison to nailing an RPG on a helo in the battlefield series for example.

these experiences is what fuelled the arena shooter's popularity at their peak, and as these experiences got replicated and surpassed by other games so we saw arena shooters decline and the fixation with 'superior' gameplay mechanics emerge as its last remaining selling point.

While I appreciate the 'tight' mechanics of arena games, they aren't enough to draw players in their masses. While its possible to argue that x or y feature or mechanic doesn't have a place in an Arena game, it misses the entire point of the video...

Well, games have become more visceral in general as technology and production values has improved. It's tough to say that a midair rocket could never feel as good as downing a helo because no one has made an arena shooter for a decade -- certainly not one with the level of tech and polish of a modern AAA military shooter.

And although the conventional wisdom seems to be "people stopped making arena shooters because players didn't want them", I actually suspect that that very same march of technology killed them off.

You give a developer a fancy new engine that is capable of rendering more realistic scenes then ever before. They know that being the prettiest has sold games better than anything else for 20 years. Well, you cant have a hyper realistic scene with people taking 3 rockets to the face right? That'd look weird, so unrealistic gameplay gets cut.

You give them a fancy animation system that can blend all of these carefully motion captured takes together in to a beautiful, fluid character. But.. you can't have someone go from a run to a jump instantly, it looks weird without the build up. If you let the character run too fast, it gets difficult to animate the legs without it looking like they're sliding. So responsiveness and speed gets cut.

You give a team of developers the tech to render open landscape that look incredible, do you think they're going to make a game set indoors?

And yeah, I will concede that perhaps an unrealistic arena shooter can't match the suspension of disbelief that a realistic military shooter can -- the military shooter allows you to imagine it all actually happening to you.

But that doesn't mean an arena shooter cant still be fun and visceral and comparing what can be done with modern tech vs what could be done 10 years ago isn't really fair.

my point wasn't so much to do with the pure technical considerations of making a visually appealing game, but rather that the visions that guide the development of a quake 'successor' generally misidentify what made the game special and appealing to the casual gamer of the time. I understand reflex doesn't have any pretensions in terms of widespread appeal, but lots of quakers do and imo they are trying to shoehorn the modern appeal of the game into the past.

a simple way to put it is that quake used to own the experiences that DICE now term 'Battlefield moments'. where silly, funny and visually impressive things happen and cause you to be in awe or laugh or both. so far I've yet to even see an arena game attempt to reclaim this spot, instead its all variations on pacman with variously poorly thought through gimmicks. I recently look through all the games in the 'upcoming arena games' thread and frankly, the one single thing that emerges is lack of imagination and tunnel vision.

In Quake you can set up config in a certain way to see invisible people as white outlines :D
I hope it's more like predator mode and not just 100% opacity.

Tbh I thought Titanfall looked really fun too but I haven't bothered buying it, will probably be the same with this. I had the same thoughts about BF4 too actually... Oh that looks fun! WIll try! ...Still haven't. :)

From what I've seen on twitch, mech fights were really dull. You shoot me I shoot you. That's it.

The only COD I played on multi (3 people on hamachi, lol) was first one and it was fun :D

Mechs for the win, shame it sounds like they suck though... I wanna see a good Space Marine (warhammer 40k) game. Warhammer 40k: Space Marine is great fun in singleplayer, loads of action.

He makes a lot of good points, especially about how traditional arena shooters haven't transitioned well into the current era of games where people want good progression systems with unlocks/leveling etc. I hadn't seen anything of this new CoD game, it actually looks really fun, they've finally decided to try something different and I'll probably end up buying it having skipped the last couple of versions.

The fans are going to hate this game, and the competitive community will try to disable everything or just stick to ghosts. It's still funny to see how developer boredom and constant outside criticism is slowly bringing the genre as a whole back into the light.

As much as I'm not thrilled about this game particularly, I am still happy about it.

Since the first BF and the first COD it's been like WW1/WW2 FPS, and it became more modern, and now it's more futuristic, excepted for BF (Hardline shit). But with Titanfall, this new COD, Destiny, Planetside 2 being ported to console too, and the new UT, that's a lot of "futuristic" FPS. Which means as the guy in OP's video said that the mobility is different, not human like anymore (super jump, dash, dodge etc), which means that when all these kids will get used to it, they won't bring anymore the argument that movements are "stupid" and unrealistic when they say they don't play TF2, Quake etc. It's good because they will look for something more "sophisticated". Nobody can tell, but it would be great that it evolves this way. The COD community keeps saying they want new and different stuffs, right? Well I hope Activision after being out of ideas will just revive Quake and throw a Quake-like game under the name Call of Duty: Space Warfare, it will make sense about rocket jumping etc. GG Quake revived. And this time ESR won't be sad anymore because Sir Bobby Kotick is a money machine and the cash will flow with advertising etc, sad part though... DLCs and one game per year recipe probably, unless id does something too to compete, if id will still be alive.

It's true that I'm optimistic, but I was joking, I've started Quake in 2012.

im ashamed to say ive probably played more console cod than any other quake player on this site. i aint proud of it but for many years i havent had access to a good pc. cod was actually quite fun as a relaxing game that was annoyingly addictive right til around modern warfare3. by then they were just recycling the same shit for $70 per year. they got the formula right, the balance between being able to pick up and play as a noob and if you wanted to dedicate time to it, allowing the player to have some long-term (6 months lol) satisfaction. the key thing to its console sucess in my opinion was 60fps.

anyway basically this just looks like cod with jumpsuits and a big tidal wave that changes the map... great. even as someone who enjoys sitting on the couch in the evening and pwning some redneck idiots i gotta say any 'magic' that cod had is long gone, i'll be surprised if this does well.

comparing this to an arena shooter is a bit of a joke and newborn pretty much summed it up already.

Why have multi-weapons and dodging movement when all you have to do is aim in the opponents general direction, fire and they just fall over in .2 seconds?
