Here you can find similar skilled opponents, the Elo system is more accurate than the QL skillmatching system.

Watch lots of streams (there's a few in the sidebar), play pub duel and get to know people that you like playing.

Pretty much you need to play a lot of games and try and friend request anyone you enjoyed playing or ask them too (if they do it then they're more interested in duelling). I've managed to get usually 2 people that I could duel when I log in at slightly off-peak times.

I would recommend you to contact CHILL clan (#clanchill) and ask for joining.
Really nice people, there're premium games almost always, pretty wide skill-range.

Bear in mind, that other people that hover around 1200 elo still may be hugely more experienced than you are... this is assuming we're talking entirely about duel.
If you're just starting out in duel, and are serious about playing everyone you need to learn, you'll wind up dropping to around 900 or so, then slowly working your way back up. So if someone has, say, 1290 elo. They could have already been through that and now be on the upswing.
At lower levels, the QL skillmatching will be more accurate than elo. It's only when you start to get around 1400 elo, or hit the lower end of tier4 that elo starts to become more accurate for picking partners.

The best advice I can give for people starting out in duel, and I give it again and again and again. Is to find someone better than you, but not so much better than you that they don't have to try, and play them a bunch of times. Try and take note of patterns, ways you die, things they repeatedly do... don't try and think about things you're doing right. Once you've isolated a few of their tactics. ( asking also helps I guess ), find someone at your level to test them on. You won't learn much unless you have the chance to test tactics in a low stress environment and see if/how/why they succeed.
Oh and, you gotta have a concept of all the fundamentals too. Timing/Positioning/Aim.
Spend as much time working exclusively on your combat skills as you can, before taking duelling seriously. You'll find it a lot more fruitful, and less frustrating.

you should prepare yourself to lose a lot at first, try to play those around your same elo/green matches. if you find someone of comparable skill, friend them asap! then you can play them again :D.

if you can find helpful higher level players, they can be very good in teaching you the basics. watching streams/vods can be good too. but these only go so far, experience is needed for the rest of your development!

It's kind of an unsual advice but if you are new both to Quake and dueling, you should probably consider training against nightmare bots. Nightmare bots are basically very bad players with very strong aim. So there are obviously weak opponents if you play a very tight games involving precise timing, good item cycling and hitting easy shots, which is probably what you want to focus on when you start
Once you can win Xaero nightmare by a large margin without too much effort you are probably good to go to train real opponents.

This. I dont know how it is QL, but in Q3 the nightmare Xaero hit like 65mg 90rg (these are its weapon preferences). On a map where the rail is in main position (ztn) its perfect to practice timing, item cycling, and to develop a basic game awareness like judgding stacks, risk factor of situations, advantageous/disadvantageous fighting positions, controlling areas/weapons. I assume in QL we can add spawn control to the list too.

Obviously what you will not learn is the "mindgames" part and aiming to a bot is much different than aiming to a human, but by than learn to say 40-0 the bot constantly you will have a solid base of the fundamentals that will put you probably somewhere in the 1100-1300 elo tier.

I'd say a good plan to reach a reasonable level quickly is to play CA to learn aim while dueling same skilled / slightly better opponents (when you find some) and playing the bot a lot. Don't bother to get yourself annihilated over and over, you will not learn anything from those game besides it will dry up your motivation pretty fast.

ql bots are uber shit, they have problems with picking up items other than weapons... yes, xaero fag did monster dmg with his 60% rg and lg, but it was useless, as i picked up every single item... without any pressure from his side...

in real duel u will mostly have to fight for items, and imo duel = items

If they run out of ammo, they just don't shoot for 10 minutes straight.

Just play everyone you can find at random. Write down the nicknames of people that beat you handily for reference, it will be useful when you'll eventually set off to hunt down, kidnap and brutally murder them in your basement.

Download quake 3 - add spiterbot 100, play some real duel.

In 3 months come back to quakelive and then you can compete.

I remember Stermy saying something about duel and how he started. He said "first you have to learn how to lose". Means you have to get with the right mindset to still enjoy yourself playing and beeing able to analyse your game without getting nervous or mad, and you will improve. I think it's the best advice i ever heard about duel. Other advices on timing/positionning etc are useless if you don't have first the good mindset.

I'd add that at the very beginning watching a lot of demos/games helps imo. Expecially if someone capable is casting (2gd or a pro player or DDK these days) so it's more than learning the maps.
