it's funny tho. whenever i meet somebody (here in the US) and they find out i'm german they're like "ooooh i'm like 1/6th german!! i'm also polish, french, blabla etc"

people seem to be interested in that stuff over here. or they just want to pretend they have culture, i don't know ;p

Many Americans are 3 or less generations removed from their ancestors immigration. It was important to the immigrants at the time, since they mostly stuck together. It just it just gets passed down a generation or two farther than it ought to.

true. what i meant is, i'm pretty sure most germans for example don't know where their ancestors came form. i personally have no idea. my grandmas last name is polish, that's all i know lol.

A company here has records of 95% of all Icelanders since 1703 + half of all who lived here from 847-1703, and there's a online database from which you can trace back to exactly how you're related to anyone here with detailed information on each ascendant :P
