I thought the New Yorker held more prestige, this guy sounds like a bitter failed stand-up comic. When someone is already so biased against the basic concept of Star Wars, his critic will be useless to anyone who even remotely enjoys the saga. But it was good for cheap laughs.

Best of the new episodes by far. Felt like they rushed the story to tell everything. CG looked very good of course. It' supposedly the movie with the most CG effects ever according to Samuel L. Jackson. Was cool seeing Chewbacca again (the actor is 7'3"/221cm ;) :D

There were some moments that were really cool (any fight scene with Yoda) and there were some cheezy stuff like when Anakin turned and the emperor killed Windu. Why would he turn when he realized the emperor wasn't weak after all and just made it look like he was?

Overall it was a good movie I think. Need to see it again to be sure, but I liked it. Can't compare to episodes 4,5 and 6 of course ;)

And what makes you think Yoda is stronger than Windu with the lightsabre? In Ep2 Anakin says something like "I'm going to be as wise as master Yoda and as powerful as master Windu", which would indicate that in terms of duelling, Windu may be the strongest of the council. However knowledge of the force is a different subject, with Yoda clearly on top. Although Qui-Gons discovery of immortality must be recognized.

Coolest scene of the movie was hands down when Anakin was slaying the younglings. It was so brutal and showed the immense length of how the dark side can corrupt. Apparently that is suitable, but killing Jar-Jar would be cruel. General Grievous almost surpasses him as the most annoying character though. Almost.

first, his name is Qui-Gon Jinn, thx gg. second, yeah that was an awesome scene - but they didn't actually show him slaying them. that would have been more awesome. I could have beaten off to that. anyway, Yoda is a fucking cop-out. the only way they could have redeemed Yoda after sabotaging his image so, would be for him to convert to the Dark Side. that would have been amazing.

i wasnt talking only about ls skills..but in overall..and as i mentioned somewhere else there, yoda x sidious was draw..although i quite agree with daryl .) yoda was twice shown as hes about to kickass and in both cases he either fleed or had to stay with ani&obi

the cheesey love scenes were necessary. sorry that you didn't pick up on that. when the movie began, it was non-stop action for 7 or 8 minutes. this was a great start. then they turned to the love scene and I thought to myself 'oh shit.' but at the end of the movie those scenes had a purpose. in fact, this movie surprisingly shed some light on the past two episodes - it all concatenated very well. however, the first two episodes were still far too cheesy.

Which is why I said I could live with them, sorry you didn't pick up on that. :)
However, the dialogues in this movie were at times dreadful, namely the cheesy scenes. George Lucas cannot for the life of him write romantic dialogues.

I don't know about Yoda being a cop-out, I think Yoda remains to be the coolest bad ass motherfucker in the galaxy. It was shivering when he knocked unconscious the two guards with a wave.

it was pretty good, i just thought the transition anakin -> darth vader wasn't so smooth.

EP III is obviously and easily the best of the three 'prequels.'
it was bound to be. it was set-up that way. there's not a single star wars fan who didn't know the entire plot.

I only have a few nits to pick with the direction of it:

1). jar jar. I don't know. I just didn't like seeing his face at all in this movie. jar jar was a completely unnecessary character. palpatine is far too much of a malevolent mastermind to stoop to manipulating such trivial minds. he had complete control already; I'm not sure what the fucking purpose of this muppet is. I digress.
2). 'nooooooooooooo!'
3). the movie would have been better if 'anakin' had already killed Padmé, but she had given birth prior to that on ship with obi-wan as some scripts and cartoons had postulated. this would provide for a better closing - the birth could be shown at the very end of the movie, then. also, luke should have been born last. whatever. edit: of course, then, Padmé couldn't have died during childbirth. still, makes for a better movie IMHO.
4). mace died WAY too early. that was weak.
5). they need to stop fucking up yoda. his image is pretty lame since the second prequel; now it's been deprecated even further.
6). We never actually saw 'anakin' die and become resurrected by the amazing Palpatine (easily the best character in all of Star Wars - he is the sole purpose for its existence). I'm not sure why this is. Everyone knows it was supposed to happen this way.

I probably left something out, but other than that it is a good movie.

eh, that's subjective. I think pretty much everyone agrees that ANH and ESB are both high caliber films. I personally prefer ANH.

Seen the movie today.

First word that springs to mind is EPIC.

Bad dialogue and Jar Jar not killed. Bit of a letdown there. The Anakin to Darth Vader transformation was a bit unrealistic I felt. But overall a decent movie and great action scenes. It's just that it could have been a lot better with a better script.

I went to epIII in the hopes that my respect for darth vader would somehow increase. Now that I've seen it, it's settled. Vader is the worst enemy ever to happen across a sci-fi adventure. Ever. He just sucks. So all anakin does in the whole series ever is chop off people's hands, with the exception of one head and one suicide a la kenobi. Where in the whole series does he actually show any ability whatsoever?

I just saw it and I liked it a lot, the lightsaber duels were fantastic, the final duel kicked major ass, one of the best movie fights imo. A few things stood out to me though. The dialogue is plain silly, I watched it in german and I think this made it worse, I'll definitely watch it in english as well to see if it's much different. The plot gets so thin sometimes it gets translucent, Padme's inability to see the total psycho Anakin is and to top it off get impregnated by him is beyond me, love or not. That started in Episode 1 already when they talk on the field about dictatorship and on several other occasions this comes up again. Similar with Palpatine being around the Jedi Council 24/7 and nobody noticing in the least that he uses the force, "he's hiding it" just doesnt cut it. The movie can be watched at 12 years old in germany and considering the stuff that goes down in the battles that's kinda irresponsible imo.

Which brings me to the final "punishment" for Anakin. **SPOILER** Chopping his limbs off and torching him for good measure (which i find kinda funny in retrospect because of the way it was shown), then let him lie there to die. The reaction from Kenobi is strange as well, just walks away, he's done countless missions and has plenty of experience and now he lets one of the biggest threats - the chosen one no less - just lie there half alive, half dead? Anakin ignoring all common sense and solid concepts to save Padme for the slightest word-of-mouth notion that some guy somewhere some time was able to keep ppl alive, even when he knows that his children will be born pretty soon and Palpatine admitted not having the power to keep ppl alive or even knowing how to learn it... lol.

All that was ok though if you just didnt question the story and enjoyed the movie. There were some scenes I liked a lot, when Anakin waits in the Jedi meeting room and you see him and padme think of each other it was a really nice moment. Also the lizard Kenobi was riding kicked ass. Finally when Anakin gets the mask put on and you see the inside coming down, that was great because you really got a sense of "this is it, he's doing to see that for the rest of his life, encased in this box, buried alive."

My last complaint is similar to Jude's, Vader/Anakin gets totally beaten to a pulp, shows no signs of superior skill neither as a tactician nor as a fighter and now he's supposed to be the biggest badass for three episodes? Makes him look bad.

I took part of the 'save Padmé' thing in a sort of Butterfly Effect, Memento, Donnie Darko light as well.. That you could perhaps alter your destiny. Anakin saw what he would do in the future and still managed not to save himself from it. Perhaps this contains religious overtones .. whatever you want to make of it. However, I don't think it was quite as simple as Anakin believing some random guy. I mean, Anakin had been there in Coruscant for 20 years in this film. (since he was 8)

They didn't fall off by themselves ;)

I see, didn't fully realize that there were books that detailed this whole story - yeh i'm a newb in star wars. This might explain a few weaknesses of the story.

oh that. yeah, I knew there were severed limbs but I haven't actually seen EPIII in theaters, just on pirated DVD-R... I was supposed to see it in theater but couldn't make it. so yeah, in the video that part was kind of too dark to make out.

it's not only fishy - it's contradictory. the way of the Jedi is to be selfless. how exactly killing a (seemingly) unarmed prisoner is deemed to be the right thing to do according to the Jedi order is beyond me.

Episode 1/2/3 were ok except we should have seen more of mace windu fighting. His purple saber is because he has mastered the hardest form of light saber duelling (there are 7 forms) even yoda would lose in a straight up sword fight - no force powers. Yoda jumps around doing a flurry of attacks while mace only needs one or two moves and your cut in two. His saber style flirted with the darkside but he was able to control himself (something yoda wouldn't dream of trying)cuz hes the baddest motherfu.cker in star wars.

If colors define saber skill, does that not make obiwan and anakin better dualists than yoda? Or am I a victim of the rainbow?

The colour has nothing to do with saber skill. Samuel L Jackson personally requested to Lucas that Mace had a purple lightsaber, noone else has one. The dark side and the sith always have red lightsabers.

looks like i'm going to be in the minority, but i didn't particularly like the movie. not horrible, but it left no lasting impression, just another one in the infinite series of shallow hollywood movies. but i guess it was made mainly for SW fans, which i can understand.

i basically went to the premiere to watch all the people with cool funny masks and costumes - and i was not disappointed =)

anyone seen clone wars animated series? what a load of bullshit, the writers don't grasp the idea of star wars or the jedi, and every single character is, well, out of character. Dreadful viewing.

Anyway, that show isn't only for kids, in fact it's quite dark and dramatic and I fail to see how kids could really enjoy that. I've heard many praises from young adults, star wars fans, which is why I was surprised by this catastrophe. Also, Sponge Bob isn't just for kids, the movie was absolutely brilliant. But I do forget i'm talking to a 19(!)

After seeing ep3 theres still only 3 starwars films for me!

Episode 3's the best of the prequels indeed, but it's still irritating to a great extent. Save for the typically American movie elements (R2D2 sitcom scene in the beginning is one example, General G. a.k.a. "I am trained in your jedi arts omfg four lightsabres!" and many, many more) which can be forgiven and overlooked after a few beers (but I don't drink!), there's another thing that bothers me in this film.

Anakin is completely unconvincing. Schwarzenegger in Terminator 3 was more convincing than this one. Whenever he had a moral problem it looked as if he was struggling to keep his diarrhoea from marring his jedi pants. He lacks pasion. He does not look driven by either love or anger or anything else. And it doesn't really look like he's struggling.

Just saw it yesterday. It was the most entertaining out of the three.

Major criticisms: Hayden Christensen can't act for shit. There were definitely some scenes which made me think of Pulp Fiction, which is bad acting on Samuel L. Jackson's part. A few scenes were boring as shit... mostly the 'love' scenes. I realize they were crucial plot points, but that doesn't mean they have to be boring. Silly rape of the laws of physics (Obi-Wan falling into the water from 500 feet should have been a pancake session).

Biggest dissapointment: Jar Jar survived.

Second biggest: Cliche'd happy meal ending. I was really hoping the bad guys would win and destroy everything.

Darth Vader isn't as bad as people in this thread make him out to be. After all, he was much younger than any of the people who kicked his ass. Plus, when he found out about Padme dying, he obviously gained more power. It is funny though how he keeps getting his limbs chopped off.

Overall critique: 3 out of 4 stars, without question. Might have managed 3½ if the acting was better and a few scenes were changed.
