Well, I figure there are two types of people who are reading this article and are thinking about rendering:

1) The person who takes a demo and wants to show it to others and/or replay it for themselves and nothing else

2) The person who wants to render it and make it into a movie.

This rendering site is really for the 1) group above who want to view the demo; putting the extra effort into setting up a huge wolfcamql installation with configs, etc isn't worth the effort since this may be a one-time thing or they just don't want to invest the time. Hell, I'm one of those people. I have no desire to make wolfcam configs (which is why I asked someone else). This would be especially handy for a group like 125fps or Face It who hold tourneys and generate a ton of demos, but probably don't want to render every single demo, encode them, and then upload them. It's a lot of manual labor unless you go through the effort to automate it.

If you're a movie maker this kind of system just isn't really for you, since you probably have a slew of custom configs, fx scripts, and textures.

Thoughts?

I think it makes sense. There is definitely a niche for this. I think it may make sense if the automatic upload to youtube remains optional, since one may still want to do some offline editing. I'm guessing the youtube account would be a unique one, so youtube's simple editing features would not be available, correct?

One abuse of this service that I hope does not happen is to carry cheats accusations. Youtube is plain bad for that, especially if we are talking about humanized bots, since aim gets choppy and all.

I guess I've got mixed feelings about the demo versus video. I definitely agree that a demo is superior to a video given that it is really small and provides more data to the viewer. Having said that, streaming a video almost outweighs those benefits since it is super easy to go to youtube.com; you don't have to download a demo, run quakelive/quake3 and play it there.

Can you do a similar tool where you paste a cfg and you get a screenshot? QL cfgs are a nightmare.

Wolfcam has the ability to only render a portion of a demo, so that'll be a feature for the future. I'll have to verify if ioquake3 does that, however I'm a bit skeptical about that. Regardless, ffmpeg, which does the x264 encoding, will generate screenshots and allow you to only grab portions of the movie, so that is always a last resort.

If you are only trying to see a single image then you could always upload a small demo and see how that goes (this also assumes that I've finished coding the ability to upload a config).

Well if I have to load up wolfcam and cut demos and stuff like that it's still the same sort of hassle. I just assumed if you can make a rendering tool a screenshot from a cfg wouldn't even be a thang. Only QL needs this, Q3 is fine as it is. Pretty please?

I think the only way you'd be able to generate a screenshot would be to bring up wolfcam, so whether you render a single screenshot or a movie (which is really just a bunch of jpegs anyway) the load is relatively similar.

Really interested to learn how you implemented this, great work!

To be brief, the render server grabs the demo, then starts wolfcamql or ioq3 (depending on the game/demo chosen). It renders to an avi, which in turn it then handed off to ffmpeg to do the x264 encoding.

The main trick is getting the renderer to use the graphics hardware, rather than a software renderer. The server's graphics card isn't very good so still not sure which would be faster, software or hardware. Regardless, I forced myself to use the 3d hardware since (depending on the feedback and interest) I'd like to extend this interface out to other games, like team fortress 2, etc. I'm pretty sure rtcw and enemy territory would work, but those would be easy since they are the same engine.

Ah that's awesome, just downloaded my rendered demo. I can't even render decent looking demos on my laptop(integrated gfx) so this project is super useful for me. What kind of servers are you using/what OS?

It's Windows Server 2008 running on a i7 2600, so nothing really special.

Imho, you need to add more options, not only for full demos/ I see a very good point to use this site by moviemakers

As a general note and on average:

-every 1.6MB of demo is about an hour of rendering + encoding. i.e. a 4.8MB demo will take about 3 hours to render

-every 2.5MB of demo is about 1GB mp4 output. i.e. a 3MB demo when rendered will be a 1.2GB download for you

Naaaais! What's the backbone of this thing, you send in a demo and it gets processed by? Can either be fraps or q3mme/wolfcam or the /video cmd... Could be very useful to quickly upload HD VODS to youtube but i don't see a reason to use it for a fragmovie where you need to cut scenes and mess with your cfg. Btw are cpma maps supported?

The Q3 renderer, using IOQuake3, has about 2 or 3 GB of maps uploaded to it. I'm using mdv's InstantQ3 package which has the RA3, 3Wave, etc included.. So yes, it should have the map you need. If it doesn't, let me know.

Right now I've got it set for 1080, but the plan is to allow the submitter to change it to something else if they prefer.

For the first render I've got I see only one change so far - scoreboard appears now.

The "1st place with ..." is removed now as well. I tried changing the scoreboard placement options but those didn't seem to have the desired effect. I'll give it a few more tries.

Turns out the scoreboard being offcenter was a wolfcam bug which was fixed in the upcoming release.

It does, which is what I'm using now to automate things. Having said that, it seems to have issues with files >2GB so I can only upload the smaller ones right now. Trying to come up with a workaround for this at the moment.

Seems like an easy solution would be to detect the demo length and split it into to parts if it is over 10 mins(q3 duels/tdm/etc), or lower rendering quality dynamically based on the length of the demo. Sorry if I've been wasting your time but this project has really perked my interest!

Breaking the demos into pieces is something I'd rather avoid if it all possible since it seems like it would be better as a continuous video, but is still an option I suppose. And yeah, I could always lower the render quality, although I doubt that'll affect a whole lot. Moving from low to high quality in q3/ql only increased the resulting mp4 size by about 10%; I'd probably have more luck capping the x264 bitrate.

Regardless, I wrote some code last night to *potentially* fix the 2GB limitation. I'll know in about 30 minutes if it worked or not.

And you're definitely not wasting my time either, shame on you for thinking that. As a programmer I find comments and questions like yours (and all the ones in this thread) to be really encouraging and result in me coding faster and producing more.

Would anyone be against the downloads being deleted 1 week after the render finishes, just to conserve space? In less than a week there are already 90GB+ of mp4s available for download.

For the most part, any engine that can output a demo to an avi (or any video format) can easily fit into the model I've setup and would be relatively easy to integrate and support

High Performance Video Encoding Using NVIDIA GPUs

Oh definitely a better GPU is going to produce the renders faster and encode faster (provided ffmpeg was using the gpu). Alas, money is a limiting factor here (as with most things). I think some of the latest generation of encoders are utilizing this.

Forgot to update things here:
-Added full support for defrag demo rendering, for example:



-Fixed an audio desync problem when certain fps settings were used
-Upgraded the backend to better handle errors that might occur during the rendering process

Some more updates as of last night
-Renders are now 30% +/- faster; encoding is done while the demo is being rendered, rather than waiting for it to finish (I'll probably do the same with uploading to YouTube if all works out, which should get another 10-15% decrease in time)
-Demos with protocol 66 and 67 now are supported better; older OSP demos were having a hard time playing under CPMA which is resolved now. If anyone has any older demos they'd like to render I'd love to get some feedback
-Random small fixes

Update #2 (July 1)
-Uploading demos in rar or zip files is now supported as well. This should make creating vods for tournaments, like 125fps, easier. You just upload the entire rar and you're done: go to http://www.esreality.com/?a=demos grab the direct link, and paste the link into the URL box at the top of http://igmdb.org/?page=render

Update #3 (July 2):
-Was able to speed up YouTube uploads by 2x!

Just to wrap up the increased efficiency changes:
-Last night and this morning I finished up with YouTube optimizations. The renderer no longer waits to the YouTube upload to finish before starting on the next demo render, which shaves off another 10-15% of the total time. This technically doesn't make the render faster, but if there is a queue of demos it at least gives the renderer a head start on the next one rather than sitting idle. For example, two demos might take 70 minutes each to render (20 minutes of that being the upload to YouTube). Instead of finishing both in 140 minutes it'll now finish both in 120 minutes.
-More optimizations for the threading, etc.

I'm not using anything special on the encoder side, although I did have to force 44Khz on q3/wolfcam in order to fix some audio desync issues.

crisp means BAD ... there is some kind of low compression going on

Hi thank you, i did noticed the changes from the newer downloads, BUT ...

There seems to be an issue still with the sound, you can hear it clearly when a health bubble gets picked up, the crisp sound is gone but the *reverb* on pickups is not normal i think.


I play online with a AKG K618DJ Headphone on Linux and there is not the sound, i can try to connect the AKG K272HD and look it up.

I made a small change to the QL rendering config so try rendering a movie and see how that looks now.

Also: do you only notice this issue on QL renders or Q3 ones as well?

Hm, it's odd that the YouTube encoded version would sound different, although my first thought was that they probably use a lower quality (lower bitrate) audio codec. I haven't tried downloading any movie from YouTube, but you should be able to check the audio bitrate on it pretty easily.

That is NOT what i said, i said the input counts, the QuakeIIIArena CMP vod's are OK, QL worse soundwise, doesen't matter if downloaded from YT or as 60fps orginal file download from Maverick servers.

So somewhere @ the input device/drivers/software used is the search of the error.

I don't know what settings may used, 44.1KHz schould be enough for audio encoding, YT has the same quality, i cannot check the downloaded videos as i told you before.

i don't know much about avidemo on QL, when i have my machine i can test it out ...
there are some settings to run it.

as i said before, the bubble pickup should have a tiny reverb, the demos you render have much more reverb and the MG has a metallic sound ...

btw, i cannot test the sound ether on this laptop i used, it has a usb sound device headphone, and the linux is prepared for this sound device, cannot change it >8-/

As i noticed, the voice is clear and good, but the ingame sound is blurry and dumb, too much base as it goes to an EQ somehow.

Not to belabor this point, but I finally got around to this tonight and adjusted the encoder to encode at 320kbps. The audio quality should be better, especially considering it was working at 128kbps beforehand. If you submit any renders please let me know what you think.

For added speed, tonight I finished the multithreading in the rendering process. Now between the hours of midnight and 8am multiple demos are rendered simultaneously (2 for now, will try more later). This essentially eats up about 80% of the machine, but that should be acceptable given low loads during those times. Speed == good

-The renderer now fully supports Return to Castle Wolfenstein demos. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory should be supported soon. Depending on how Jedi Knight looks I'll try to support that as well



-I've been testing out the OpenGL 2 renderer that comes with IOQuake3. It makes the render time about 22% longer, but it makes the lighting and graphics look pretty nice.

Most people would have been happy with basic HD IMO and a faster service, I assume the speed is related to server usage, or you have access to some freaky power beyond what I can imagine?

If 10 people did a demo at once, would the speed still be the same as just one person doing it? I have no idea of your resources.

IMO most people who want to make a really HQ video will probably do it offline anyway and want full control via a video editor. These are also the people who actually make good things, giving everyone the ability to easily produce HQ stuff is a drain and even if you can afford it, I don't think youtube needs any more reasons to get more stuttery with 1000's of mediocre videos using a lot of resources.
If it free, people will often use as much as they can especially if they are none the wiser.

This is great for quickies, but you should take advantage of people cutting you a lot of slack in return for that service. Even if you locked it at 480p, it would still rock.

Users will tolerate acceptable image quality for ease of use, but with the attention span of people today I reckon conversion speed is the most important factor, not obsessing about image quality.

If this is for testing for potential monetize options or personal use then go for it as this could be bolted and sold onto many games, I never got why devs never did something like this as its free promotion for their games.

Would be good to see someone do a test on using this service, vs traditonal methods and time it to see what the difference is.

If 10 people submitted demos for rendering then the render server would only process the first one or two (depending on the time of day). All the renders after that would queue up. Assuming all 10 demos were the same then they would all take the same amount of time to render, you'd just have to wait through the queue first.

-Added support for rendering only part of a demo. When you submit a demo for rendering you are given the option to specify a start and end times for the output movie. You can specify a start, end, or both, or just leave them blank to render the entire demo.

Your demo-database hosting enhancements was referring to the demo-hosting location and not to the renderer-video-hosting page.
Being able to download the demos themselves would be the best enhancement you could provide, IMVHO.

If you are the 'Maverick' that plays counterstrike, you would know that CSS and CSGO have ever-changing client-server versioning so demos are only re-playable for a very short time. That is, the only viable option is to render the demos into video if you wish to ever view it again. So those games, although encumbered by Steam, would be good choices for supported games.

Hm, I think I may have miscommunicated. I think we're thinking along the same lines:

I am *not* hosting any rendered videos other than ones that people specifically request to be downloadable (and even those get removed after a while). The demo file is kept on the server, but it isn't available for download off of igmdb.org mainly because I didn't think about it. I originally thought that most people uploading a demo for rendering wouldn't want others to be able to download their demo. Maybe that's wrong?

http://demos.igmdb.org is the demo dumping ground for the time being, however at some point that site will come together with the demo rendering page since they are already closely related. When that happens you'll be able to upload a demo for cataloging, download any demo, view information about a demo, as well as view the render of a demo if it exists and/or submit a demo for rendering. When this happens it'll make sense that any demo previously for rendering will be part of the searchable catalog. Hopefully that clarifies the 'vision'.

I am, unfortunately, not the Maverick you are referring to, but I was not aware of the versioning issue you mentioned which makes demos unusable. That's good to know. I'll mental note this as I start trying to render those demos.

I understood that the rendered videos are hosted onto youtube. That is why I don't see any harm in having the demo retrievable, since it is publicly posted anyway.
I do see that some people only want part of the demo rendered... and perhaps for just this reason your concern is valid.
Perhaps this could be a toggle-able option for when the upload?

As for CSS and CSGO, Valve shot themselves in the foot on those and ESR is not very Halflife-centric. I do enjoy watching those games, but I'm not asking you to add them.... although I do think they are good choices because the demos become obsolete(unless you are running a cracked non-steam version of the correct protocol engine environment with the correct client-side files).

I would like to return the favor by uploading a set of whatever demos you are personally interested in, but, regretfully, as I thought about it, I'm not sure I have a way of doing that or even contacting you personally. =/

Come to think of it, I don't think I've tested the parser on an mvd demo; I'll have to check that out. Right now when an mvd demo is rendered I just leave it up to Q3 to determine who gets the main pov and who gets the little windowed view. I'm not sure I'd be able to control it by setting a cvar though.

It's pretty awesome but is there a way to delete the video from Youtube? Also is there an option to not have it go to Youtube but just make it available for d/l for a period of time? I did a test and it automatically sent it to youtube and its a shitty demo of me out of shape mentally and aimwise :).

I would just like to take some demos, convert them and then d/l and watch them on my phone when I'm waiting around or something to try and get better.

I haven't coded up any ability for a user that submitted a demo to delete the video from youtube. Not really sure I'd want to though.

I have, however, coded up the ability for a person to submit a demo and only have it uploaded to their own youtube channel. This functionality isn't exposed publicly yet, but it would make sense that if you were a donator then you could have the video be located wherever you want (download only, your youtube channel only, or both). As of right now as a donator you can already download the video directly.

Quick update:
-As mentioned in the grand opening thread, I believe I've made the (final) speed improvement for QL renders which should improve rendering times by about 40%. In a nutshell, rather than having the engine output an avi which is then encoded, the engine will now output uncompressed tga images (which are encoded on the fly) and a wav file (which is muxed later on).
-Q3MME has replaced IOQuake3 as the rendering engine for Q3 demos (CPMA, DeFRaG, etc), which will also allow blurring to be enabled later on as a rendering option. More on this later.
-Using a similar method that sped up QL renders, Q3 renders will now be about 40% faster as well.
-Estimated times to complete a render have also been adjusted accordingly.
-Demo uploads are now done asynchronously, which allows for larger demos to be uploaded.

Hm, well I do parse each demo prior to rendering it, so I could add a few keywords to the description. Would that do the trick? I'm not sure how youtube handles searches on the movies and if they take into account the description much.

The demo name gives it away, if someone want to do a text example, maybe deleting the posability to change the name would do the trick :)

The render server has Realtek HD Audio hardware in it, although not sure how 'high quality' that is. I updated the drivers for it yesterday so the most recent renders may sound slightly different due to that. Also, a few months ago I changed the encoder settings to use AAC, rather than MP3, which theoretically should support higher bitrates and less loss. I'm skeptical of people being able to hear a diffference between the two encodings though.

Your encoding is good, the sound is as crisp as it can be :)

It would be nice to have a local version of this. So we dont have to download whole videos and wait for a server to process things.

It would also be nice to be able to sift through large sets of demos for frags meeting certain criteria such as:

1. x of frags in < y seconds
2. damage > x within y time
3. frags of certain people

There already is a local version of this: just run WolfCamQL and you can replay/record the demo however you wish.

You can already parse demos easily using UberDemoTools by MyT: http://esreality.com/post/2691563/uberdemotools/. Ideally you could find the exact portion of the demo you wanted to render using UDT, and then render only that part.

When will rendering be back up?

Rendering is online now. Assuming you're commenting about the upcoming downtime...the rendering machine is scheduled to be replaced with a much beefier machine however I'm currently waiting on the datacenter to get back to me about when it'll occur. I'll reply to this post when I know more as well as update the igmdb page.

Regardless of the downtime...you can still upload demos and have them added to the queue since that functionality is outside the rendering machine being up or down They'll all be processed.

The render server's hardware has been upgraded so things are much faster now. A CPMA demo which typically took about 20 minutes to render now finishes in 6 minutes with the output being a 10 minute long video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGqm3Y8xTKM). It also has more memory so running multiple renders at the same time will be easier.
