MD - 36 points
102 and BREAK - 31 points
AVG - 30 points

so, either cooller or dahang has to win every single map tomorrow to compete with MD for the main trophy

(such a pity 102 didn't win TDM)

The duel portion is definitely more wide open than the other events, so Tox can't take his team's 5 point lead for granted. 100% agree with you there.

However, it'll be interesting to see what seed he is given tomorrow. Will Syncerror take into account all team members or just the ones most likely to participate in each duel round?

Depending on how this is done, Tox may be seeded somewhere in the 5-8 range. I'd say if he is seeded 6-8, he'll basically have a free 5 points from the first round. Then if he can secure 4-5 more points, it will be very tough for BREAK, 102, or AVG to catch up.

Tox is currently 2nd on QLRanks, but Cypher, Rapha, DaHanG, Evil, Cooller, Spart1e, Strenx, and Zero4 have all had more success at past quakecons during the Quake Live era - each earning at least a 2nd place finish.

The least tox would realistically score is like 6-8. So that would leave the door open for cypher if everyone else did shitty as well. So basically cypher and anyone below him is out of it.

The rest should be pretty interesting though cause a lot of shitty seeds are like evil and rapha etc. lol. So a lot will depend on just shifty liuck.

There is a max of 20 points in each segment. But making 4-0 (+ winning all maps) in this field is not trivial. If the pairings are similar to tdm & ctf than Tox has two easy opponents + two hard ones, so at least 10 points almost guaranteed. So how pairings are actually done is even more important than before.

Yes, initial seeding is very important here, but I don't think they will use standings from previous sections for the initial seedings, wouldn't really make any sense. As for pairings in subsequent rounds, the rules are rather vague: "In subsequent rounds, competitors are sorted according to their cumulative scores and are assigned opponents with the same or similar score up to that point. Some adjustments may be made to as sure that no two players ever oppose each other twice or to even out advantages a player may have due to chance."

Since we now know they are seeded by duel ability, Tox will most likely get 10 points in the first 2 rounds along with every other top dueler.

I think 51 is the magic number for tox, so if tox does whats expected and gets 10 points in the first rounds that will take him to 46. So if he has a 3-0 after that he basically wins the $8k for overall team. But if he had a 0-3 loss, then he could still lose with a 2-1 victory. So he could win 3 matches and still lose with a 0-3 sweep against him. As long as someone (cooller or dahang) had a perfect performance with no losses. I think.

I don't think so.

The only advantage I see that could be gained is from "gray area" duelers like chance/dkt/doomsday/zorakwar who potentially could take a map from some of the top tier duelers. They could be like, "1$k, I'll let you stomp me completely for ensured points", but even that couldn't guarantee an overall victory.

I think it sucks that this quakecon everyone goes home with zero money, except like eight people tops? Players are used to coming home breaking even or profiting, but this time everyone goes home with a dent in their wallet, unable to win anything to cover costs. Hopefully next year we don't get some gimmicky event and there can be a normal tournament. All the events before had money going to a lot of people, this time it's barely any. The winner take all thing is really lame when there's one quake lan a year

Cypher, Rapha, Dahang, Evil, Tox, Cooller, ...

I was getting ready to complain, but it's actually just QCon last year with Rapha boosted up to above Dahang after he won their recent showmatch. Not sure if I agree with this, especially with Rapha jumping up so high despite the rest just going on last year's results, but it could be worse.

Can someone smart tell me how much harder it is for Break to win with Tox and Cooller seeding below Dahang? What about Averagers?

So in round 1, dahang, tox, cooller, and fazz should all be heavy favorites. Fazz probably has the easiest matchup (of the four top teams) and should be the least likely to drop a map.

If we assume the 1-8 seeds all sweep 3-0 (as they did in TDM and CTF), the second round will look as follows...

Round 2
Cypher - Tox
rapha - coolleR
DaHanG - Fazz
evil - chance
dkt - Effortless
ZorakWar - Bronson
Doomsd4y - Twitch
Vodkax - Zereck

Obviously they all have tough matchups, but it is interesting to see that dahang and fazz will be facing off at this stage. Only the winner will likely have a chance at passing MD in the team standings.

Assuming tox loses to cypher, either Break or Avg will have closed the gap on MD. If dahang wins, Break will be down at most 2 points overall (at best tied). If Fazz wins, avg will be down at worst 3 points (at best down 1 point).

I'm not going to go into too many more scenarios/rounds because there are so many possibilities with players dropping maps and potential upsets.

I did want to touch on the potential evil vs chance matchup for a second though. They faced each other in an extremely tense battle at quakecon 2013 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7nPn6KsgGo). If chance were to pull the upset, tox may have to face evil in the 3rd or 4th round. This outcome could present another hurdle for MD.

Basically, tox has to go 2-2 for the other teams to have a chance. Dahang and cooller probably have to go at least 3-1 with favorable map scores, and Fazz probably has to go undefeated for his team to win. If tox has a meltdown and goes 1-3 or even 0-4, then the whole tournament blows wide open for Break, Avg, and 102.

Created a mockup tournament in challonge with that seedings. So unless something extraordinary happens (like vodkax beating evil or doomsd4y beating dahang) we will have following games in round 2:

I meant to post my general thoughts on QuakeCon before it started, but here goes!

It's been exciting so far, and the game mode I'm most interested in--duel--hasn't even started yet!

Some pros of the Swiss Triathlon format are that players can completely focus on one mode per day, and an extra kind of importance is given to each map, as winning a map despite losing the set gives you points, and it is to each player/team's advantage that they both win and score as high as possible (in case tie-breakers are needed) per map.

Some cons are that a team's result for a mode depends on their shape on that single day, and that, in a way, the format doesn't allow for a logical progression throughout the tournament. The points-per-map provision takes a bit away from the importance of a single match. And, only first place gets any money.

I don't like how first seed plays middle seed, and middle seed plays last seed--this seems to be a side-effect of the Swiss Triathlon format, which maintains a score per team, per round, and considers relative scores for matches past the first round.

Averagers has put in a lot of hard work, and I'm happy to see the good results that they've earned so far. Perhaps found Em! would have been better served by sticking with sparks and honing their play as a team instead of juggling their lineup, but maybe not. Chemistry across all team members is very important, and I hope to see the interview with found Em! that they indicated they are happy to do at QuakeCon.

These are the duel matches I'd like to see happen:

rapha vs cooller for old times' sake
rapha vs tox as a rematch of last year
cooller vs evil
cooller vs cypher
zorakwar vs dkt
zorakwar vs at least one of cooller, tox, fazz

My general impressions on the duellers is that they aren't in quite as good shape as they are generally coming into QuakeCon. Cypher and evil have been lacking practice, and while rapha has put in more duel practice than for last year's QuakeCon, he's been losing just a bit more than I'm comfortable with--I have the same opinion on DaHang's win percentage in practice duels. Cooller has put in a good amount of practice, and I hope he performs. While a lot of positive feelings about tox's chances are circulating, I don't think he will do as well as many are predicting. Keep in mind that he did upset an out-of-shape rapha last year, then lost 3-0 to both DaHang and evil. tox should win his first two duels however, which puts Meltdown in a great position to win the Tri-Master tournament.

Please show a player cam or film the players themselves in the tournament area--it's great to see and hear the person behind the in-game name.

I just hope QuakeCon continues to happen each year, year after year...

Problem is that the greater majority of the players present aren't duelers, due to the how the event was set up.

The rules say that the prize money of the Grand Master duel is given to the individual player competing in it. So evil obviously wouldn't need to share this with his mates.

You are correct about the Duel stage of the triathlon. Each team member gets $2k. So if anything, evil's team mates could decide to give the money to evil, not the other way around.

According to the rules, the prize money of the triathlon's duel stage is shared among all 4 team members.
So, if anything, evil's 3 team mates would give the money to him, not the other way around.

However, the rules also say that the prize money of the Grand Master duel is given to the individual player competing in it. So evil obviously
wouldn't need to share this with his mates.

For me at least, Quakecon begins now... Let's hope all this TDM/CTF was actually worth it in the end, because it surely wasn't that much fun to watch. One can only hope it'll bring a refreshing extra nerve to the duel competition, now that they have their whole team depend on them. I heard two constraints that lead to that:

- interviewed ppl should be from matches that have been or are about to be streamed (to try and tell a meaningful story)

- post match interviews are done only with the winners (to not be an ass with the players)

That lead to MD being there most of the time. Hopefully today there's more variety.

Maybe try to come up with a variety of questions and ask them to specific players. No need for each player one by one to give their generic "feelings" about the game, they're all saying pretty much the same thing.

It's too late for this now, but maybe you can do it with players - given your constraints, ask players about the strengths / weaknesses of their opponents and what they will do to counter them, what they expect, etc. Gives you a good opportunity to follow up on those questions if you interview the same person later (whether the match was as they expected, any surprises, etc)

Edit: Bringing up history is also a great way to make questions interesting, and to let viewers know about the players.

e.g. Cooller, your last QuakeCon was in 2011...

... how has your playstyle changed since then?
... why did you decide to come back this year?
... have your 102 teammates influenced you somehow?

etc.

It's pretty simple. The tournament was scheduled in a non-stream-friendly way. It was done like this, because this was actually a pretty efficient way to run the tournament (easy to explain to the players, easy to keep somewhat in schedule etc). A stream/televised event is constructed differently from the ground up, and whatever a few people are going to try to do, it won't change the facts.

Now about the interviews being dull, I see what you mean. It takes the right personality to be funny and entertaining, and I guess I'm not that kind of guy. Also, I did not really put any thoughts on this before hand (I was not expecting to do anything at this quakecon besides chilling). Now I tried to keep them interesting by letting the players talk about the game (which I thought people would care about), but I realize this won't please an angry crowd, who feel they have missed on a lot of action and social interactions (which is the case).

CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK FOR MEMENTO:

Memento, you should have actually talked to Rapha more rather than just doing an analysis with him. It was good clearing up his item plays on Sinister, but after that it dragged a bit. Ask him about the tournament and the players. Talk to him about Zorak in a more general way - "how will he do for the rest of the day?" or something.

Most people couldn't have done technical talk of what happened in the game like that, and I like listening to Rapha talk about his games, but tone it down a bit :D

I'm definitely not saying to talk about random shit. Some technical is good, but so is some more general discussion about the tournament and other players. This is the only chance we get to hear what these players think about what's going on while it's happening.

This is especially true if the interviews happen between matches in the same round. Keep thinks interesting and moving, don't get bogged down in small details.

nah try it yourself. Theres a bunch of obscure shit with the ql netcode. Com_maxfps 250 is not the same as com_maxfps 250.00. Com_maxfps 120 from my observation made it ez for me to dodge aka have shot go thru me and rocket splash doing little damage too me. 249 fps behavior is different then 250 behavior. I was surprised at first but its true. I talked about it with rapha briefly when he was palying sparks on a duel. Sparks couldnt hit rapha at all and then i said 120 vs 250 fps and he smiled. Told me that he uses 144 fps its a good compromise. Ql netcode is fucked.

ur not supposed to zoom that much in duel for rail. Only on fresh spawns or when ur waiting around corridors (like cooller does)

Not in a fucking actual battle, that just ruins your steady aim because of the zooming effect and because you are trying to dodge at the same time (unless you are a natural flick railer)

And tox isnt a flick railer, which is why he cant hit shit in duel. He should try to rail with his normal fov in duel.

There is an interesting difference between Cooller, Rapha, Fazz, Tox and Dahang from one side and Cypher, Evil from the other.

The first group actually play not only for themself but for their team as well, maybe, feeling additional pressure about it.
While Yanushevsky and Orehov obviously aint give a single fuck for that "dont let ur guyz down" sheeet, not pretending to win triatlon at all. Frankly saying their surrogate "teams" played their historical role at the moment then both Cypher and Evil get to Qcon.

Interesting matches in round 4:

evil - rapha: winner wins $8,000 for his team and is in the grand masters final

cypher - dahang: winner (most likely) gets 2nd place and is in the grand masters final. If dahang wins, he might also get his team the triathlon championship.

~~cooller - fazz: winner might get his team the triathlon championship, depending on how tox plays~~
Apparently it's cooller-chance and fazz-bronson instead. Both of them are relevant for the overall triathlon championship.

edit: Oh, it's cooller-fazz after all? According to the standings, it shouldn't be. Probably sync just decided to have it because he wants to.

Do you mean at the very end of t7 during the last 10 seconds or so? If so, dahang was basically 200/200 and cypher was about 100/100(going by the little hp/armor bars at the top). If you mean the whole map, didn't they basically both play the same? 1-1 scoreline on t7 isn't much at all seeing as it was 1-1 for 99% of the map. =)

I need an advanced maths degree to understand this tournament... It is a Tri Masters Championship with MD winning 2 of the 3 Masters divisions but they could still not win the overall title and lose it to a team that did well in each masters division but didn't win any of them?

What idiot came up with this rediculous system? This is Quake not maths camp...

I see what you mean, like in a bo3; if you win 2 out of 3 you win the bo3, fragcount doesn't matter. The difference is that a bo3 stays within the same discipline whereas the tri-master title does not, it's more about looking for the most all-round team. I think that's the reasoning behind it.

In the olympic decathlon for example they do it similarly, they don't just look at who won most of the individual bouts.

It remains a bit far fetched, especially because they are mixing team and individual competitions. As far as I'm concerned they could just as well have dropped the extra tri-master bonus.

The tri-master thing was more of an excuse to justify mixing three competitions. Sync has mentioned that he was only allowed to do one tournament, and this was a way to have three disciplines and still pretend they're only doing one tournament.

Tie-breakers put Chance in third.
This is what you get with only four rounds.

Apparently not, evil didn't play against chance and chance has a better Buchholz than evil, so he's ahead for sure according to the rules. Except if evil's Buchholz increases a lot after his last match, he won't be 2nd with only 1 map won.

The thing is Buchholtz takes sum of opponents' points excluding the highest and lowest. As Dahang played 4 matches it takes points of two opponents, while evil playing only 3 matches has his Buchholtz based on 1 opponent, Fazz, and it's at 11.0, the score of Fazz. He will have 23.0 after his fourth match.

It is such a pitty that quake became that stupid where everything is random now, no arcade games so far, the mesurement of skill is ability to wait, listen, spam, +back. I can understand why cypher rages all the time, he was REALLY TOP in vq3 cpma and here in ql he trying as much as possible even versus noobs, wich are most of the top now were in quake 3. But know looking to this game 1 and 1 thing that means success in ql is initial damage. Absolutely no balance in weapons and stupid spawn system, if it might be called system... And yours lovely cooller and evil were meat in q3...

If I'm understanding this correctly, rapha is in the Grand Master Duel Finals regardless of how he does against evil in their last match of the duel stage. The top two players from the duel stage move on to the Grand Master Duel Finals. These are the rules for determining tie breaks, in their ranked order of use:

1. Wins vs Tied Participants
This tie break looks at the match record between tied participants. For example, if Team Alpha and Team Beta are tied based on statistics but Team Alpha defeated Team Beta when they played during the tournament, Team Alpha wins the tie break. When more
than 2 participants are tied, they're ranked by the number of wins each one had against the others.
2. Median-Buchholz System
The Median-Buchholz system is used to break ties in Swiss tournaments. The value it shows is the sum of a player's opponents' scores, with the best and worst scores discarded. For example, if a player's opponents scores are 1.5, 3, 3, 5, 9, the 1.5 and 9 get dropped from the calculation, so the player's tie break value is 11 (3+3+5).
3. Points Difference
Total points scored minus points given up.

Say evil beats rapha, so rapha, DaHang, cooller, and chance are tied 3-1. Rule 1 states: "When more than 2 participants are tied, they're ranked by the number of wins each one had against the others." Of the four, only two have played each other--rapha beat DaHang. rapha from this should move on to the Grand Master Duel Finals.

Of course if rapha wins vs evil, then he will be the only 4-0 player and will move on to the Grand Master Duel Finals in this case also.

I am not 100% about it as I didn't analyze it completely, but it's what I think:

If Chance goes into GM Final it would be a side effect of Swiss System's property, that four rounds with 16 players will determine clear winner, but lower places can be a bit mixed up (compared to round robin with eveyryone playing everyone). This is including 2nd place, which may be taken by a less skilled player. Because of that the prize should be winner-takes-all, as it's with every single stage of Tri-Masters.
The problem is the Grand Masters Final takes two players, the 100% best player (winner) and the second place holder, who, as shown, can be a player whose pairings favoured him, not necesarrily the second best player of the tournament.

I've never liked the swiss system, but still ... everyone knew the rules beforehand so stop bitching randoms.

If one would perform well they'd have an opportunity to fight for the duel chamionship thingy. Everyone knews that MAPS count, not only overall match wins, so don't give up maps to randoms (no offence Zorak, you're comeback and win against rapha was fucking amazing) and you'll have a shot at the championship.

Rapha still gave him, a map win, he had to put extra effort into it so that zorak could make that comeback.

I just don't get the chance hate, he's been getting good results in the scene for 11 fucking years, just as long as evil btw.

I'm getting a little bit irritated by zoot's poor reads...I don't mind if he casts but he's getting a bit cocky and overconfident IMO. He gets overly judgemental about certain decisions claiming they are 'wrong' or 'right' which is usually a really poor way of describing situations when both players aren't actually making any major mistakes.

Not that the first rounds of the tournaments were flawless, but as time goes by it just looks like things get even worse, which is an achievement in itself.

I can't think of something that would make Grand Finals even worse, but I JUST KNOW THAT SOMEHOW THEY'LL FUCK IT UP.

Well this is more like a showmatch. Playing a minimum of 40 minutes to the maximum of 70 minutes for 8000 dollars is not that big of an effort.

Keep in mind this will be one will be on of the biggest payoff giving showmatch in e-sports history ... and it's only a Bo5

The Bitcoin StarCraft Challenge Naniwa vs Scarlett was for almost 9000 dollars and that was a Bo7, and Sc2 is what ... 15 minute maps on average, might be 10, might be 3 hours.

And seeing a smart player like rapha win over the one-dimensional borefest that is evil certainly doesn't pose a problem to me. Quite the contrary.

So evil dropped Furious Heights because he preferred playing Elder as the third map. Why would he even do that?

Some stats:

Rapha played Elder 58 times
Evil played Elder 42 times

Rapha played Furious Heights 1225 times
Evil played Furious Heights 1593 times

At Quakecon 2013, evil beat rapha on Furious Heights.

Why would he pick Elder? It doesn't make any sense. Sometimes I think that one of the reasons rapha gets so many tournament wins is because he's the only one not making stupid map choices.

But that doesn't make any sense. If he's worried about rapha's brain, he should be worried about rapha mastering a new map faster than he can himself. And that's exactly what happened. It was rapha's great map knowledge and inventive movement that decided Elder in his favor.

Evil can beat rapha by having better aim and execution; that's why a map like Furious Heights, where everyone has insane amounts of experience, is best for evil. And that's also why he won Blood Run. He just outdamaged rapha when it mattered.

It's so obvious. How can a player like evil not understand this kind of stuff?

I think it's the other way around. Less familiar maps, where the meta is not yet very well developed, are played more with aim and combat instinct. The more well played, well developed maps are far more strategy heavy because a non-heavy aimer can position themselves better for fights.

Did you watch the match? It was obvious that Evil won Blood Run due to better aim/combat skills, and that Rapha won Elder due to being a few steps ahead in the meta game on Elder. Rapha made one of the decisive frags when he circumvented the locked door without having the key by an awesome smooth movement that totally caught evil off guard.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. He picked Blood Run. Then he decided to drop Furious Heights in order to play Elder.

Yes, that's the main point I was making. And I have explained why I think so.

He stood no chance on Elder, we just saw that. He has beaten rapha on Furious Heights before, there's no reason to drop it.

Majority of people saw the matches played by evil and Cypher prior QCon. In my opinion they are the TOP 2 in Europe by far for such a long time. When they play each other, the games are simply amazing.
I am not saying that, if Rapha lived and played in Europe he wouldn't keep up with these 2. That I don't know.

All I know is that if Rapha met Cypher/Evil/Cooller till Round 4 maybe the situation would be different.

Don't get me wrong. I think the format was complete shit and it sucked that rapha didn't play anyone except evil.

With that said, I think he could beat cypher (obviously we won't know though... thanks syncerror) and he clearly can and has beat evil.

The point they were trying to get across is that there's no way evil thought anything differently about going into that match against rapha just because rapha hadn't played any top euro duelers. evil knew exactly what to expect.

Saying that's the only reason he lost is a bit disingenuous to rapha who has beat all of the people you named on lan several times.

I apologise for saying that basically rapha didn't deserve to be in the final.
Although I still think it's "odd" how he never played an european till round 4, after seeing his performance that fact became irrelevant. He really outplayed evil and was the best dueler at QCon 2015.

Rapha was extremely lucky in games especially first map...in 2013 final, rapha pulled off miracle. But i credit rapha not making mistake ever. Evi should not make fundamental mistakes and play stable...overall skill, evi is better than rapha...

According to the Quakelive stats, rapha has a record of 55-3 on Elder. This is the opposite of losing it "a lot". Seems like you just made that up.

(Evil has 35-7, which is also good, but clearly worse than rapha's stats.)

Because he simply tought he had more chances, he tought he was stronger on elder, for whatever reasons.

And he wouldn't be wrong. Evil usually gets the first frag, and once you have the key, elder is locked, if you are evil.

One of the maps in which is more difficult to come back. Probably the worst.

Perfect against Rapha, indeed.

I think you could maybe argue its a tossup but consider this:

rapha has almost no one in NA to even practice against. cypher can play against any of the top duelers in Europe whenever he wants. Yet rapha still manages to show up in top form after what? Practicing against dahang, chance, rusty/inactive zero4 or czm?

I think that alone shows what caliber of a player he is. Even more amazing considering he started out playing against bots because his internet was so bad.
