Was wondering about that myself. Seems kind of pointless tbh. I'm guessing he has it loading a different hud when he zooms.

pretty easy if you have the hud file installed, etc

seta ch_q4zoomxhair "0"
alias "+v_q4zoom" "ch_q4zoomxhair 1"
alias "-v_q4zoom" "ch_q4zoomxhair 0"

bind (key) "+zoom;+v_q4zoom"

Nice that it finally works to stream well. Tried alot about a year ago but it just wasnt possible without alot of stuttering making it unplayable. Valid effort, but I'm gonna be very surprised if this takes off.

My suggestion is to do proper duel analysis, it's the only thing that is even the slightest interesting with quake as it right now. That way you might pull some viewers from the other games. Pub ffa/ca/tdm just are to boring/unimpressive to get viewers to stay imo..

actually that matters a tiny bit.

Just an example. Hotshotgg's stream is easily the most populated one of the interwebz. He makes more than $20k a month just on advertising, gets sponsors for his clan and so on; but he's the most annoying person in the world and gives 0 insights of his game.
He got his e-fame because he once was the #1 ranked player in League of Legends, the game which dominates streams everywhere, and people stayed watching him because he raged a lot and also there was e-drama coming up every month. Remember that game has more than 12 international LANs a year and there are several major online cups every week, so conflict between teams and players makes it a lot more entertaining.

Objectively, watching LoL's solo queue is boring, the streamer can't be more unpleasant to watch and you learn nothing from it.
This is Television in the end, and it works the same as real TV. Only 2 things matter: catching the audience, which can be done with a little help from 2gd (for example featuring stermy's stream on twitch.tv), and keeping it by being entertaining to watch.
Strenx would be a great streamer for example, but don't expect big numbers because this game has only 67k active players (according to qlranks CA stats, which are being tracked since only 2 months ago) and LoL has 32 million registered accounts.

To be honest there are only 2 LoL streamers who give decent advice, and none of them had lots of viewers until they joined a major team, but even then they aren't close to the said numbers.

Also, it might have a little tiny bit to do with that LoL has 15mill registered accounts whereas ql has 44,613 duelers, 8,452 tdmers, 66,831 caers players since whenever they started tracking it in 2011.

I agree what you are saying. But here we are talking about aiming for none quake players to get their eye on the stream, and I just don't see that happening without some depth to it.

bah I was editing the post.

I play LoL since closed beta and when it was released it had less players than QL for quite a while, but streams had massive numbers even then.

This is one of the dozens of reasons why QL didn't succeed, but this one has nothing to do with id software being the worst company ever.
If QL streams were feasible when justin.tv started then this game might have at least twice the players.

the only thing I'm saying is that depth and competitive stuff won't catch the masses, since that only matters for current quake players and for outsiders that will watch at most 30 minutes and then leave. What matters is people watching it constantly so they get interested in the game and start playing it.

For that the stream has to be fun to watch 24/7, nothing else, but there's a lot of competition nowadays, from girls who play almost topless to guys who give away stuff every day.

judging by the ql awards there are also multiple millions of ql accounts:

Testing One..Two..
Complete 1 online match.
* Date awarded: 03/14/2009
* 195 friends (87% of total) have earned this award
* 553597 players (22% of total) have earned this award

Obviously LoL has a lot more players but comparing account numbers with those of active players doesnt make sense.

http://riot-web-static.s3.amazonaws.com/image...c_full.jpg

11,500,000 active (monthly) players, against QL's 67,000 according to qlranks.

Those 67,000 are the amount of accounts that joined a CA match in the past 2 months, which is when qlranks started tracking that mod. This means that method won't be reliable in 6 months or more for example.

I think there was other award that was won by more people, but it wouldn't be an accurate representation of total accounts anyway.
Playing one online match is accurate though, because a huge percent of the total accounts weren't even used once because of network problems on id's side: massive queues when the game went open beta and when it went live as well.

there are 32.5m total accounts as of november 2011, there were 15m as of July 2011.
The game grows insanely fast considering it was released in october 2009. I'd say it'll surpass WoW's numbers this year and become the most populated pc game ever. To put it into perspective, so far sc2 has sold 3.38m copies globally, according to vgchartz
http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=1495692
http://na.leagueoflegends.com/news/youve-grow...ssive-game
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_Legends

What happens is that LoL is highly addictive and has lots of incentives to keep you playing at least once every 2 weeks, for example content updates (1 champ, gameplay balance, skins, improving some older content of the game and other aspects, etc.) and elo decay. Plus there's the sensation of achievement when you play, because of earning xp and ip (in-game currency for buying champions and runes), individual and team ladders if you play ranked games, and a lot more.

Also there are online streams so when you aren't playing you are watching the game (or youtube vids or contest made by the developers), several weekend cups with thousands of dollars on the line, national tournaments, and there are international LAN events every month, all sponsored by the developer (which gave away usd$5,000,000 just on prizes. Top notch teams earn quite a lot on sponsor money and of advertising in their streams).
All the information is featured and integrated into the game client so you can't miss it.

It features bigger updates about every 6 months, yearly seasons and so on.

I'm guessing 99% of those duelers are in EU.

On a given night in NA I only see maybe 15 or 20 people playing duel. About twice that in clan arena, nobody in TDM, nobody in CTF, and one or two full FFAs. :(

every now and then i watch his stream for a couple of minutes, and he recently got banned for abusive behaviour in HoN. which ofcourse made the chat go wild.

normal HoN streams dont do it for me. but this guy's so retarded, its entertaning to watch.

You underestimate it a bit imo because he is/was a famous pro and not only in ql but also in painkiller/quake4 etc. and right now there are almost 500 people watching him playing the game.
The most famous sc2 streamers don't commentate either still they got a lot of viewers because they are either really good (stephano) or have a huge fanbase (idra). People want to see how a pro plays and does stuff (zoom).
Cooller would probably get over 1000 people to watch him and he doesn't need to say a word.

I'm surprised it hasnt got more viewers since it got spammed alot on twitter by influential people. However, I think it's unfair to judge it after 1 or 2 days. If he still has 500 viewers in 1 month he did better than my expectations.

I still think he would get most subscribers if he does it the day9 way, he could do it since he is a charismatic and out spoken guy aswell.

Time will tell!

Didn't know about the twitter promotion. I assumed that he got the viewers from advertising on esr and posting the stream on other sides..
I agree tho that he could get a lot more if he did something like you mentioned. Actually I'd rather see a live duel commentary coming from you as you are one of those highly entertaining players :D

some feedback

watching pub ca is really dull, i dont think anyone will stick around for that. i dont really watch player streams but when i do its strictly white-ra's sc2 stream and he plays only top level duels. you should focus on duel with or without commentary against good players, not against some mid skill pubbers that even i could beat. or maybe 4v4 from clan games but since youre not in a clan that practises its not really possible, pickup is okish but not that great

If i understand correctly then he streams whenever he plays - for fun or not. If he had a show then yes, it would be better if he focused, but in this format it doesn't matter.

My thoughts:

So far, it's surprisingly fun to watch you play.

But I'd rather see a real schedule and know what's coming up. It will get tedious to check your stream every other day and see if it's something interesting.

I'd like a schedule like this:

1) Monday and Wednesday from X pm till Y pm: duel practice with e.g. Spartie.
If it's too hard to verbally commentate during the match, you could atleast talk to us between maps. Maybe play a map 3 or 4 times in a row and everytime tell us which mistakes you made and what you'll do differently in the next round. Then spam a smiley everytime the thing you planned to do works out. ;)

After playing, you could also watch your demo and elaborate on it. The match analysis should work even better if you do it right after you played it.

2) Tuesday and Thursday from X pm till Y pm: CTF practice with the team you'll form for the CTF LAN in April. :D
Preferably with team voice communication.

3) TDM with colwn every 2-3 weeks? Showmatch against some other all-star team?

Huh? Naturally, I'm talking from a viewer's perspective and not from his perspective.
And I think the viewer's perspective is useful information to him because he wants to keep his viewers interested.

I didn't tell him how he's supposed to have fun, if that's how you read my post. And I didn't tell him how to schedule his playing either, I just pointed out that imo having some sort of a fixed schedule would help keeping viewers interested which I reckon is his goal.

Besides, he is a professional gamer so he obviously doesn't purely stream for fun but rather for exposure.
I just gave some advice on how to get more exposure by pointing out what I and possibly others would like to see. What is the harm with that?

Did you read his post in this thread?
If you got any requests or ideas for the stream, let me know.

You should incorporate webcam with mic on the stream, so talking about what's going on while you're playing. Doesn't have to be a constant stream, just some comments now and then would be better (so we know you're concentrating on playing :P). I think thats the most important thing to make it more entertaining because it lets ppl see your personality and style etc much better. I liked watching idra's streams because he did commentary and I don't even play sc2.

edit; and actually what you did with colwn was even better, but thats only when all 4 of u are around to play and have an opponent :)

I thought this was quite a good idea. Not much time for playing games these days and I found myself actually enjoying watching Stermy play some 1v1 every now and then (even if it's not live). He's got a somewhat entertaining style and seems to put some effort into answering questions from different people.

I guess the only drawback is that people currently don't know when he'll stream next time.

Thnx to stermy for taking time to do this :) Its appreciated! Would be cool if u could do some showmatches against some of your quake buddies, like tox, winz, spartie or even cypher. Maybe talk a little about the games afterwards on stream with our without your opponents.

No one will think badly of you even if you do not win all your games ;) afterall as i understand it you dont play with your usual settings when streaming.

And it would be fun to see some 2v2 tdm aswell, especially if you play with some of your colwn mate and uses voicecomm. Anyway just some ideas, i enjoy the stream whatever it is.

Just tried installing that Q4 zoom. Keep getting this error when pressing zoom:

"ALIAS +v_q4zoom not found"
"ALIAS -v_q4zoom not found"

Altho I have added these lines to my config:

seta ch_q4zoomxhair "0"
alias "+v_q4zoom" "ch_q4zoomxhair 1; +zoom"
alias "-v_q4zoom" "ch_q4zoomxhair 0; -zoom"
bind SPACE "+v_q4zoom; +zoom"

Also I have the q4zoom.menu in my UI folder.

Any ideas? Much appreciated :)

No, in QL.

Okay. So I created a new config file (based on a config from stermy).

Now I have loaded the 4 commands in my config.
I have added the q4hud-zoom.menu to the UI folder.
I have added a line in my custom HUD that says "loadMenu { "ui/q4hud-zoom.menu" }"

That solved the error messages in-game, but when I zoom I just get the regular zoom, not the custom one.

Help?
