Zhibo "RazerJ" Fan in the semifinals, leading to the grand final match against

I understand your previous statement and I was replying to the "under stress / public observation" scenario in which I am sure I did deliver a better performance.

as other's mentioned it's not a failure though as everyone understands what he wants to say.

But I can't agree that ispeaking in front of a camera has such an impact.

I do think that in a case like this, speaking in front of a camera can have a massive impact. Especially when it concerns something you are not familiar with, in this case for k1illsen, the most basic English.

He has a very small vocabulary to begin with. Not to mention horrible grammer. Now if due to stress, you take something away from his really basic English which he is aready very insecure about, he is left with even less to communicate with. Therefore, stress has a much bigger impact on his ability to communicate in English than on someone who is very familiar with the language.

Just my theory.

thats a statement which obviously depends on the context ("such an") and here it's:

to which replied, I wouldn#t speak perfect English but better tha nhe did. Never said it wouldn't have any influence at all.
But i did imply that his English was bad to begin with and while stress probably made it worse it didn't go from good to horrible.

really depends on the teachers and how much you do on your own.

I had some good and some bad teachers, but I also read english books (Star Wars :P) which helped a lot just to get some vocabulary.

In the end my english was good enough to get me a B and an A in the 12th grade English class in America (while I was in 11th grade in Germany)...

I think he did very well, the fact that he can speak English decently impresses me, learning a second language isn't easy, or fun.

When germans are on holiday in the netherlands they always talk german...its not that i dont understand german (not that im good at it), but it annoys me that they refuse to even try and talk english :-)

in school, teachers TRY to teach correct pronounciation. if they see no real advancing they simply stop, what really sucks :(

something i can confirm :P my parents live close to the dutch border near nijmegen and everytime we visited nijmegen it was hard to find someone speaking english .. as soon as we switched to german it was no problem :< funny :D

tried talking English with the Dutch, after some time I figured I was better off talking German and Platt, while they replied in I don't know what mixture. But we understood each other.

that's for the average Durchie, mind you. I am aware that there are quite a few who speak better english and / or German.

i live near enschede so people kinda expect me to talk proper german, but i agree that most germans understand our own 'language' (some stupid accent ppl use in this part of holland :P) i think thats what u mean by platt..goes both ways i think :)

i also agree that the dutch ppl around here are crap at english :) so i do understand but it kinda annoys me cause i dont talk german or 'platt' :-)

funny thing, platt that is. I just moved to Hamburg in January this year. And believe it or not, there's a TV-Channel (or more like a daily show on a local TV station) where they only broadcast in 'platt'.

I understood about 50 percent, but fortunately they've put subtitles in the show :D

Anyways, I know some people in person who can speak proper 'platt' and I find this dialect soooo funny to listen to ^^

no, it's actually an own language, but related to dutch, German and English.
The easiest (if quite inexact) description is that it's English words with German grammar and pronounciation.

e.g.

mak de dör to. = Close the door.

My grand aunt speaks only German and platt and with ~65 years she flew to Australia to visit some relatives.
noone could understand her German, but she just tried platt and suddenly people got what she meant.
Only thing that she found weird was that lot's of stores advertised their toilets but none ot those were open.

Klosett = a word for toilet in German.

Any idea why someone would have Platt as a last name? Because they are from that area? You know if it is a common name around the region? And where is this region in Germany?

I'm mostly of American, and before that, British ancestry, and relatives seem to think that further back we're german( =[ ).

Platt \p-la-tt\ is of Old French origin, and its meaning is "flat land".

So it's not likely to have any connection to that language. I think the name is most common in North West England!

Yeah, all of those places are in Lancashire which is kinda where the NW starts (and then there's Cumbria above it). Carlisle for the win (got some family links there too)!

There were a few interesting programs on the "blood" of Britain and how mixed it is/isn't last year. Might be worth checking them out if your interested in the potential history of your family (I'll see if I can find the name of it).

you are correct, but incomplete.

"platt" is also a word in German, not surprisingly meaning "flat", without the "land"

but flat land is a very fitting description of (most of*) the regions where platt is spoken.
Something like you can see your visitors an our before they arrive ;)

*exception are a few regions to the south

I was born in the Emsland, and platt there is also a bit different from Münsterand, even though they are neighbors. Not much but a bit.
And yeah there is a difference to the platt in Hamburg, but I think most of it is just pronounciation.

Apparantly the most different is the one spoken in the Sauerland, never heard it myself though.

There is actually a wiki page and dictionaries for that for ruther research ;)

Yeah you could understand most of it, but I think he would've explained himself way better in german, then he'd answer much more sponteanously. Now he had to concentrate too hard on his english to do that and I got the impression he had more to say about some of the questions.

I used to get annoyed with that too, but as long as it's someone else who knows english as a second language it's ok.
It's the uni-lingual (did i just make that word up?) redneck fucks that talk about someone having poor english language skills that piss me off.
But yeah, I kinda sorta speak french, but some french guy on here trying to hold the most basic conversation with me would just laugh at me. :(((

Though it's a shame that Slasher got this instead of Carmac who would have done a better job. Man, SK is so cheap.
I think Slasher is either intentionally confusing k1llsen or just stupid. Probably both though.

Interesting interview...And his English isn't terrible - can still understand. Especially, as said, it's not his first language, he's on camera and also he is at a stage he did not think he would get to.

Pity he has to give up but his reasoning is correct - you need to make a return. Especially with dependants!

Anyone else beginning to think that Slasher is getting commission or something on QuakeLive :D Pushing people to play it / digg news items.

He's pushing it because he PROBABLY wants to see a Quake 5.

I promote Quake Live, because even though it's in BETA, it's still a really good game. Sure, it lacks small features, but the game is balanced.

I doubt he's getting commission. I hope he continues to promote it, so we can get more QL players, thus getting us a Quake 5.

Coming from the UT scene, i think quake live is one of the most complete and easy to use games i've had the chance to put my hands on.

I mean, you log in, d/l some minor things while playing the tutorial, and then bam you can go on servers, there's people playing. Easy as hell, i love it!

Not really, rail + lg is lower, and rockets being increased, making it a lot more balanced game.

Rockets in Q3 don't do shit, and in QL, they MIGHT be overpowered, but at least it's better then Q3. (gameplay features)

He's got a very good chance of getting good english skills, were half the fuckers whining will never have a chance at getting 2nd in a big tourney. So fuck if it was a bit sketchy I understood what he was saying and that's what counts at the end of the day.

Think he came across as a normal down to earth lad and also thought slasher makes quite a good interviewer tbh.

Oh dear Coollers poker face is slipping. He wasn't joking, he seemed to be actually bitter about the kode5 saga. He's done so well keeping his trap shut for years, adding an air of mystery while others around him open theirs and look stupid. Oh well i thought he was better than that.

While Killsen (having limited English) seemed a normal decent enough fella. Played well and deserved his 2nd place.

Don't know why people feel the need to attack his English. I had a German foreign exchange student who lived with me for a year and sounded nearly identical (for atleast a few months). He was very likable, made lots of friends, extremely brilliant, cool accent, etc. I'm sure most German's don't speak English regularly enough and b/c German is quite a contrast to English it's understandable.

Anyhow, cool guy and I respect the reasons he will be quitting. Life goes on for some, while fresh youth (hopefully) come into the scene. Quake just has to stay fresh as well if there is to be a community big enough to continue supporting it. I think Quake Live should support that, if not Q5 is still on the horizon.

To me it was just an unpleasant surprise to find out how bad us Germans actually are at English. Most of the German exchange students around me have a really bad accent, and same goes for k1ller. He's most likely a cool guy and a very skilled player, but I just somehow expected people from a country like Germany to have better English skills, seeing as it's the number 1 language in the world.

Relax man, i dont think anyone thinks less of him your country because this fellow has an accent. Most people understand him just fine. Plus, has he been to alot of major tournaments outside of germany?
When it comes to speaking english, as you know, studying it is one thing, but actually speaking it for real is a little different :)

Using 'Aftermath' in an already advanced question to a guy who can't remember the word for appreciation or support, pfff :D

Have to admit though. In general, the German accent just is horrible to listen to. Not knowing the words is really not a problem. English is such a simple language in this regard. Even with almost 0 English, most people will still understand what you are trying to get across.
