I am sure they will show _something_ more at Quakecon but seriously, the biggest gaming event for the media of 2008 is E3 (correct me if another show is "bigger"), and after all this time of almost complete silence (sort of reminiscent of MGS2's "submerge" phase back in the summer of 2001, this is what they have to show at E3.

As the "trailer" (LOL) was winding down to a close, I was absolutely blown away that they even approved this at the id office. It's amazing to me that they even had the guts to show it.

That said, what they did show of the enemies looks pretty cool. Art direction is top shelf, as usual for id.

Here's hoping that we get some actual gameplay... or SOMETHING more than this... at Quakecon.

Quite a lot of big game developers have dropped all support for E3 and the company behind it.

So it's entirely possible that E3 isn't as big as it was a few years ago (especially after the joke of last year).

Judging by the way it was showed, I bet this was EA's trailer. ID will probably show more at quakecon, though I agree E3 probably would have been a better place to do it.

I think it's the setting more than the ability of the engine. There were times in Crysis where I had to remind myself that it wasn't real.

I find the art direction of Rage's environments disappointing, whenever a game goes into a desert/canyon type area I get bored straight away and usually hate those sections.

The monsters and people look pretty sick though. I like the bit where the two guys with guns jump over and run past the camera.

It's pretty amazing at highest quality. Runs smooth on my PC, and there were just some points in the game that looked so true to life, I honestly couldn't make out the difference.

Is anyone here noticing how realistic the rock faces look. It's completely organic looking, unlike anything we have seen, including crysis. I'm sure that the crytek engine could handle art as well executed as they are showing in these Rage trailers, however, would it handle it at 60fps on an xbox 360 or ps3? No.

My personal preference is towards environments and artwork that requires more creativity. Crysis loves vegetation sure, however, I didn't really see anything to spectacular going on apart from that. The setting in Rage allows for tons of creativity with architecture, machinery and fashion.

I am first and foremost a gameplay over graphics kinda guy. But to deny the technological advances and the ultra high quality of artwork going into Rage is just ridiculous. I can't wait to play, it has the potential to be one of the greatest fps series of all times.

Frankly I believe the goal of 60 fps while looking that good is damn fine when only the craziest and most expensive hardware now can barely push crysis to that at max unless I'm mistaken.

Crysis requirements fall into the most common hardware right now. The Geforce 8800 is currently the #1 video card.

unless something has changed in the past 3 months there's no amount of hardware you can throw at it to put crysis on max with a steady framerate, though. "passing system requirements" and "full framerate on max settings" are two totally different things

AMD Athlon 4400+, 2gb ram, vista, Geforce 9600... all settings on highest at 1024x768 with perfectly smooth performance. The geforce 8800 is probably a tad bit better, and about $50 cheaper now. If you're having performance problems, it's on your end.

I'm playing Crysis on a C2D E8400, 4 GB DDR2 6400 and a Radeon HD 4870. All settings on Very High (this requires DX10, if you didn't know that allready), 1280x1024 and there is no way I would be able to get through it with AA and AF enabled. Yes, it is playable without it but there are times when I get terrible framerates. This with a computer being ALOT better than yours.

The number one videocard right now (bang for buck) would be the Radeon HD 4850. You get three, THREE (if not more), of these babies for the price of one, ONE, of nVidias flagship cards right now (that being the GTX280). And you get two of the Radeon HD 4870 for the price of one GTX280.

If you have the money, don't care what you spend it on and you only want one single card then the GTX280 is the card to get. Quite soon the Radeon HD 4870 X2 is out though and it is both cheaper AND faster than the GTX280.

The RIGHT thing to do though is to get either two 4850s, two 4870s or one 4870 X2 when it get out. Anything else is a waste of money.

And you still most probably wouldn't be able to keep a good 30fps going steady through the game.

I would say they have a pretty sweet rig there and they BARELY gets over the 30fps line with the 8800 GT and GTX at 1280x1024. And they don't even have the settings at Very High. Only shaders are maxed out while the rest of the settings are at High.

Intel + ATi is the way to go while nVidia + Intel is shit considering you have to get a motherboard with the shitty nVidia shipset to be able to use SLI.

And what is your obsession thinking ATi's cards are overpriced? I would say it's the nVidia counterparts that are overpriced as even the GTX260 costs more than the 4870 while not performing better. THAT'S overpriced.

For the record, I did not buy I prebuild PC. The total cost for it came up to about $1150 which is NOTHING now considering the USD isn't worth shit in Sweden right now.

Maxing out on AA/AF isn't a requirement of very high. Again, moderate AA/AF with all very high on my 4400+ with Geforce 9600 - steady and smooth. Why do your "facts" need "probably"? Even still, motion blur kinda ruins the point of AA/AF.

Both high level cards are too expensive, but ATI is more expensive where it counts - where you're spending enough to play the current lineup of games without getting overkill to the point where it goes above the call of duty, and it'll be useless when new architecture comes out in 6 months to a year.

Do note that minus the AA/AF, an 8800 on a 4400+ will run quite well on max settings. Sure, I won't get 150fps, but it'll be rather smooth with some AA/AF. Max AA/AF, I'll start to suffer, but that was not the point I was trying to make anyway - I was trying to say that the Geforce 8800 is more than enough to run the game rather well, and that developers no longer need to fear releasing a game with those requirements.

I forgot to reply to this... I wasn't saying it was the best, but that it was the #1 most common video card that is currently in use by players. For the price, it does what it needs to very well, and should last another 6 months before you might need to start looking for an upgrade.

Glad we can agree! I was merely pointing out in my original post that Crysis requirements were no longer to a point where only 17 people could even run the game, and that developers can now venture into that level of detail and not worry about the number of consumers who can run it.

30FPS on consoles, those which got something like a 7800gt and same old gen kind of cpu capability, means anyway 100 fps on an average nowaday pc (taking account of the so-called multiplatform compatibility of idtech5 -which would cancel the "you got to have a high-end pc to run Pong if it was primarily coded and optimized for e.g. xbox)
