Who said real life is boring? I can easily prove that real life is a lot more exciting and fulfilling than anything the online world can offer, by a large margin. You'll also have a lot more financial security, which believe it or not, is kind of important for your personal health and well-being as it directly affects your living environment.
Also, no real man would ever die trying to pursue a life of gaming.
Again, I wasn't talking about playing games for a living only. Im talking about goals who are beyond common ones who almost everyone has (getting a job/career, getting car, getting gf, growing old). Im talking about a more personal type of goals that people near you would consider strange/out of place (because they usually don't have more goals than the "getting a job/career, getting car, getting gf" pack). And thats what I was trying to explain with the "abstraction from mainstream" thing. I know that this doesn't make a lot of sense to you, as I also fail to explain it clearly. I find that kind of person more interesting than the one who stays forever in that "safe zone" without going further, instead of becoming a fascinating individual. That kind of person doesn't feel fullfilled with that and needs more. Now you would ask yourself, and what are those goals are? Well, not everyone needs more and I just cant continue typing this kind of shit anymore.
I have "the pack", but thank god that there still are ppl like u that aren't brainwashed. It is extremely rare nowadays, to see someone think for himself and not been told how to live his life.
Even though I agree Maka's point as a some kind of standard, your comment is golden, perhaps not so much in context of gaming but ya know, in the context of this whole how to live your life stuff in general. I do also have the "pack" and the way you put this whole brainwashing thing deserves a plus from yours truly! :D
Most professional careers start as pipe dreams and amatuer status (unfortunately competitive gaming got labelled "pro" before it really is - as I always say it needs more structure).
But people should be allowed to dream - they could do something that they love for a living / career...What's wrong with that? Sure they should go to school, etc. but that shouldn't deter them - same as if you were passionate about any other sport / hobby.
Let the kids dream - it's not going to affect you at the end of the day now is it?
(Also, anytime I read articles like this I imagine them in the future with their own kids and it runs like the South Park Episode where Stan is in the band and Randy isn't happy!)
Nice column. Zero4 was saying the same thing recently. Sure have fun, play games, get good. But keep life in balance. No matter what it is, keep it in balance. Don't let this game consume you.
I was afraid it was going to consume me so I started playing WoW.
From what I have heard though, players play the map more than they play the other player now.
That's why clocks should be turned off for official matches and players should have to time items in their head. I didn't like a clock when I was playing, and I still don't like one. Takes the skill out of timing items.
Maps like ZTN and DM6 it is more important to play the map and time items than it is to predict the other player's movement.
In the old days, you had to keep the timing in your head and couldn't afford to get nailed with a rocket to try and grab an item because you could be off by a second or two and get owned while you wait. Now, because a player knows the exact second something is spawning, they can take a direct hit from a rocket or rail knowing that the damage will just be replenished instantly. If they had the possibility of being off by a few seconds in their timing, that would change.
Also, the increase from 20 to 25 seconds for armor timing made it easier to run maps.
Along with that, weapons respawning every 5 seconds limited the importance of controlling ammunition as well as running important weapons. Why do firing 10 rockets matter when you can just pick up another RL in 5 seconds? When you have to wait for 30 seconds or find ammo around the map, that changes things. This also put a player in a position to make some critical choices... Do I run the important weapon and get some ammo and miss an armor respawn in the process? Or do I get the armor and give up a useful weapon to my opponent? When it was this way, it was impossible to run a majority of the armor and health as you had other things to time and grab. (weapons and ammo)
Also, megahealth used to respawn 20 seconds after the expiring of the player having 100+ health. That also required a lot more skill than just looking at a clock and grabbing it every 35 seconds or 2 minutes depending on the map as you had to predict when the player was under 100h or do the dmg yourself and time the 20 seconds without the help of a clock. This also made it so there was only one active megahealth at any given time.
I have never liked the changes made to Quake 3 in that regard, even when it was initially released.
Playing computer games was also much different than playing console games. It was around the time of q3's release that the hapless nerd and 35 yo. virgin stereotype had begun to be shed. I know there's a lot of youth playing PC games now but the avg. video game player at that time was a 32+ year old male or something. It may still be the case but for a lot of people, anything to do with computers outside of work was considered not 'cool'.
More like quake3 is the one with the best equilibrium of difficulty vs accesibility to date. Because 17 players wont keep a game aflot for more than... 1 year maybe, no matter how skilled you have to be to play it. Between Thresh's era quake1 uber slow gameplay and painkiller/cpm uber fast one, quake3 is the quintessential of DM. Thats why 9 years after being released its still popular, not because of being "dumbed down".

Battle.net ? Quake Live system ?
I'm 100% sure that CPM would work for the "mass" with a good battle.net system. You can still have lot of fun as long as you're playing someone with your level and as long as it's easy to start a game & stuff.

Counter-Strike ?
CS = dumbed down realistic version of Half-Life...
If you watch the really old school demos out there he's right but in comparison to 2001-2006 (or so) it's more about the positioning and fighting each other now.
