Why should you speak British if you're not from fucking Britain? There are more native American speakers than British, so why should I choose a niche dialect instead of an international one that everyone understands?
American English is for the most part stupid, with awful pronounciation and corrupted spellings. Not saying British English all makes sense either though.
e.g. Inflammable means that a material can easily be inflamed. Apparantly in the 1920s some clever Americans suggested that the word 'flammable' sounds much better; now most people believe inflammable means the equivilent of 'un-flammable'. Good one lads.
Also, I just did some research:
"The British settlement [in Australia] was originally used as a colony for convicts banished from England, and between 1788 and 1839, approximately 160,000 convicts were sent to Australia and became a workforce to establish this new country"
Before 1788 the population of Australia was around 1,000. So that means Australians today are 99% likely to be descended from an exiled Englishman.
If you're gonna chuck shit, be prepared for some to fly back ;)
I'm not Australian, but the old convict ball and chain jokes are pretty old and cheesy despite the fact this country became greater to live in than the mother country itself in such a short time, the amount of pommie back packers i've worked with trying to get permanent visas' to live here is increasing every year.
