so an arcade enthusiast of mine linked this video card to me todsy

obviously not top of the line but it let's you game on arcade monitors and other 15khz monitors. What interested me was playing QuakeWorld at 15khz... would this be doable? what would the result be..?

i think i get what you are saying, but all ordinary computer crt's will display the native software resolution of doom and quake. I'm not sure, but msdos was something like 700x480 or something along those odd lines? was doom 320x200? I might be completely off. Does it have to be interlaced to have scan lines? or is that even older with monochrome screens/green?

I'm running 100 KHz horizontal at 800x600, 154 Hz vertical.

As far as I can tell this arcade card is to ensure that you can run old arcade games at their native resolution and intended refresh rate, both vertical and horizontal, since this sometimes isn't even possible with regular video cards.

I don't think my video card will take any refresh rate numbers I throw at it, or any resolution I give it even if the monitor is ok.

As for quakeworld, it seems completely insane to want to run the screen at such low frequencies. The 154 I use is from quakeworld's sv_fps of 77 (77 * 2 = 154) so I can try to set 154 fps and get two refreshes per server frame. In practice things don't work so well, but w/e.

You can get even cheaper (probably free) older cards if you want 15khz using Soft-15khz.

so, in theory, if i have a gpu capable of outputting the resolution properly onto the screen, and can run QW at that fps or an integer of it and at that resolution then it should be smooth as fuck right? or am i misunderstanding when they say 15khz

15000 and this is regarding the horizontal refresh of CRT displays, which is how fast it draws the horizontal lines from one side to the other, not how fast it can draw the whole screen with these lines.

This site gives the formula for calculating the maximum vertical refresh from the maximum horizontal:

VSF = HSF / number of horizontal lines x 0.95

For example on my display the number of horizontal lines is 600, since I'm in 800x600. I'm running ~100 kHz so that's:

100000 / 600 * 0.95 = 158.333333333 Hz

Since I'm running 154 Hz vertical scan frequency that's about right.
