A 1v1 FPS Game, I actually designed one. I think Quakers r a little bored with Quake overall and we need fresh blood (new players), but we wont get it due to the game play being quite old.

I designed a new FPS duel game called "Reborn" its meant to play like quake with a more advanced movement and weapon system, with integrated tournament system, ladders, tour UI and a whole bunch of competitive features I helped implement into Bloodline Champions. I have a meeting with an investor to raise 2.5 mill, I could get the whole game done in 2 years tops, which would still beat quake 5 by 3 years i'm guessing.

Put inside the game the possibility for gamers to borrow money from the bank, and they will all jump on you, happy to "invest".

New world order should go like this: If you cannot do something on your own, don't do it at all, because if this is the case then it proves to be a bad idea from the very beginning.

I would too, but if he needs $2.5m to do it right, surely he needs a big investor or two to cover the bulk of that, before maybe turning to Kickstarter for the rest.

It's interesting to think about what sort of target he could realistically set for a Kickstarter campaign. I guess it depends on how well he can sell his idea to the rest of the gaming world, rather than just the Quake diehards. But I'm not even sure how many of us there are in that latter category. You'd hope we'd be worth $100k or so, but who knows? Maybe I'm being too optimistic there.

This page shows insane numbers for three big names, then a handful raising 500k - 1m, quite a few others with 100k+, and then a whole lot with 10k - 100k.

(I'm not sure what % Kickstarter takes for itself, but I remember reading that it is pretty substantial.)

Also, I forgot to add, I'm not really comfortable with the idea of one guy being entrusted with millions of dollars of random people's money, with no binding strings attached. (I don't know exactly how the law works, but as I understand it, Kickstarter backers don't really have any way to stop the backee from doing a completely half-arsed job and spending most of the money on whisky and hookers...)

I'm only talking in a general hypothetical way here -- I don't think 2gd is actually planning some kind of scam, and I'm not suggesting he's the type of person who would do that. (Nor do I think a 2.5m dollar Kickstarter is at all realistic in this case.) I'm just pointing out that when you get up into that region of ridiculous money Kickstarters, there is a lot of risk and not a lot of accountability.

Obviously you need the backee to either be very trustworthy, or have an extremely valuable public reputation. For someone amoral who didn't care hugely about their rep, there would be a big incentive to spend 1% of the budget making some crap so they could say they fulfilled their end of the bargain, and paying the rest to themself as a 'developer salary' or whatever. (And then spending the next 20 years living a life of leisure.)

But even for people who aren't cynical bastard scammers, there must be a bit of a grey area. How are they to be held accountable for the way they manage the budget?

I'm only speculating here, but I'm assuming that having a serious $1m investor on your back would keep you in line and force you to set out your plans in detail, and meet certain commitments, on pain of getting your arse sued. Whereas (again, AFAIK) receiving your funding entirely from random Kickstarter backers leaves you to spend the money pretty much however you see fit -- leaving a greater risk, even if you're not deliberately misusing the money, that you'll make bad decisions and have nobody to call you on them before it's too late.

Was that in the 'real talk' interview? I didn't watch that because it's ridiculously long, but I see now that someone posted the time he talks about Reborn, so I'll have a listen! Good to know though, it's exciting that he's actually talked about doing a (medium-sized) Kickstarter

especially a guy who cant code, design or do anything else related to the actual development of the game except to mimic how he wants a player to jump IRL or tell people he wants the players to move faster~

$2.5m is a ridiculous budget. He could do a perfectly functional proof of concept that could be built on for under $100k. Leaping up to a major budget is a disastrous idea. License the Unreal Engine (free until you make over a certain level of profit I believe), build two player models, all weapons, two level texture sets and a couple of levels for each gameplay type. The community would playtest it for free.

PMX or something else? For PMX arQ kept disappearing without warning for months at a time so keeping people to continue became impossible.

That would be insane and almost guaranteed to fail. The Unreal Engine would be perfect, it has a strong tool base with many people experienced in their use. I believe things like netcode could be modified if needed.

yeah i don't think we will reach 100000 really. the only ones who are really interested in supporting this is _this_ site and most the ppl here don't even pay 2 Euros a mounts to support id and QL.
