The 14 year old's competition for the torunament included a bored Vietnam war veteran trying chess for the first time, 5 homeless people who were drawn into the event due to its source of heat, a captain's mate for a Lobster fishing trolley who wanted a day off and used this tournament as an excuse, and "Billy the duck", a mascot of Channel 9 news team.

In round one, our champion faced a tough challenge since round one where he got check'ed three consescutively by Billy the talking duck, who was later disqualified for eating the opponent's rook. The only comment released so far was "quack quack".
