Since a few days I�m a proud owner of an EVGA Geforce 8800 GTX. All went well for a while till suddenly all shit happened.

Started out with a BSoD in World of WarCraft, ever since all shit hits the fan. Everytime I boot up windows, it starts to hang after 5 minutes and I get nifty pink/purple dots and stripes everywhere. Even when I�m just idle the shit happens.

So been searching on the EVGA forums, Nvidia forums, tweakers.net, WoW forums and it seems a lot of people have the same problem. Not a little bit but shitloads of people.

People try all things, from driver changes to Beta to even RMA their cards. -_-�

I myself tried everything yet, checked my temp, checked if I had enough Watts (got 530), checked if I should change the drivers, checked my DX, checked if it still happens when I have other expansion cards installed, checked my mobo bios, checked my mobo drivers, checked if my other video cards have the same problem, checked if it was my memory. Anyway, kind of checked everything but couldn�t find a solution

How ever, when I de-install the drivers and boot up windows. It won�t crash at all, how ever I�m not able to play games then. The same counts for Windows safe mode.

Anyway, I URGE nvidia to fix these drivers, because latterly thousands of people suffer from the same. Especially since people pay a phat bill of 500 euros for their GTX.

Ill try 1 RMA, if that doesn�t work. Ill ask for a refund and wait for ATi R600 to come out.

A friend of mine has this same videocard, but he didnt encounter any of those problems. Plays oblivion at the highest res and settings, and no probs whatsoever, maybe just a production error?

Could be your power supply. I have 750 W Tagan. I would recommend at least 650 W for the 8800 GTX. It is a beast.

That is minimum requirements and that would more than likely work if you had just a cpu, 1 hard drive, one optical drive, one monitor etc. If you have a normal PC like most of us with multiple hard drives, optical drives, monitors, you may want to shoot for a minimum of 600 watt power supply. The 8800GTX is also PCI Express only.

Also to push the card, I'd recommend a Intel Duo Core, you can get by with a high end AMD64 like a AMD64 5000+ but the Core Duo is a better CPU all around performance wise."

That's likely a hardware issue. Fuzz is 100% correct. 530 watts doesn't mean a damn thing if the amps supplied by the 12v rail is low. The 8800GTX is a beast of a video card and depending on the specs of the rest of your computer (dual core cpu?) you may not have a sufficient power supply to use that video card.

I've built several machines for myself/friends each with a 8800GTX in them and have never experienced problems like this so I really doubt it's driver related. Brands include EVGA and XFX. In my dual core/8800GTX machines I use Seasonic M12 700 watt power supplies.

Post your PC specs and I'll do what I can to help you (or you can just RMA then post back when that doesn't work either). It's entirely possible that your power supply degraded due to strain -- this would explain why it worked fine for a while.

what are ur power supply specs? mainly the 12v amps

i have a 500w with 28a under 12v and I haven't ran into any problems with my new PC other than BSOD with nvidia firmwares (no BSOD since I've been using stock drivers only though)

I use a core 2 extreme x6800, 80gig hd, dvd/rw, 931c samsung lcd monitor, audigy 2 value, gskill 2gb ddr2 800, with the 8800gts 320mb

Nice system. If by "Targan" you mean "Tagan" then you will definitely need a more beefy power supply for that rig. You didn't mention if you're overclocking or not either -- which would make matters even worse. :P

Power supply purchases are getting tricky lately as systems are becoming even more power hungry. Remember to pay attention to the 12v amps and combined wattage. The generalized "wattage" on most power supplies isn't even close to correct.

I generally recommend Seasonic and PC Power & Cooling PSUs for high end systems these days. A 600 watt Seasonic could easily push your system without problems. It has 3 12v rails @ 18 amps each listed in it's specs.

If you go the cheaper route then you may end up banging your head on the desk a lot but these are not the only good brands of PSUs. Do some research and see what works well with a system comparable to yours. Good luck.

Do keep in mind the GTS is not nearly as power hungry as the GTX. ;)

Thanks for the tips man. Ordered a phat: Thermaltake Toughpower 750W, 6xSATA, ATX/EPS, 2xPCI-E, 20/24pin. A friend of mine using this one aswell. Has the same specs except he's using an Extreme Quad 6700.

Well, I probably wouldn't buy one new for that system. It's one of those 50/50 power supplies where it might work flawlessly or you might experience problems. It's also one that overrates what it can actually do.

Examples:

-Tagan 530 watt PSU delivers 396 watts MAX on 12v. (combined 12v wattage)
-Hiper 580 watt PSU delivers 360 watts MAX on 12v. (combined 12v wattage)
-Thermaltake Toughpower 750 watt PSU can theoretically deliver up to 864 watts MAX on 12v. (They don't list combined wattage on the PSU itself for some reason and I'm too lazy to do further research, but I know the hardware inside it can support way more than this)

The 12v rail is the one most used for power by nearly everything so that's why it's so important. The peak load on PSUs (the wattage they advertise) is usually a combined wattage of all rails (3.3v, 5v, 12v, -v, etc). In the Hiper 580 watt's case, almost half (280 watts) is supplied by the 3.3v and 5v rails, which is nearly completely useless to your setup.

Of course, if you're already using that setup with that power supply or know someone that is and you/they aren't having any problems then I wouldn't worry about it. Otherwise, I'd recommend staying away from this one.

I got a evga 8800gts and it BSODd a couple times in q4 and I did what you did, started checking everything.. I then uninstall the drivers for the graphics card and just installed the ones that came with it and not the firmwares on the nvidia website and I haven't got a BSOD since.

I was just about to install the firmware again because i thought it was a dif problem until I saw this thread, I guess I'll wait.

I had similar problems with a 7900gt.
In My case White stripes would appear on the screen.
I got so worried because the same thing happened to my old 9700Pro from 2003.
Anyway, after a couple of sleepless nights, I experimented with another monitor and the problem was off.

Sorry, I haven't had any experience with the 8 - series

But it is very disturbing, your card is one of the best things on the market (Brand, Chipset etc.). Is it like what happened to the FX Series? (not exactly but something similar as nVidia screwed up).
