You understand the point, the grand scheme behind every question. I knew what you were trying to prove so I was biased in my answers. Not to say what I answered doesn't reflect reality, but I don't think anyone online, a hardcore gamer, is going to tell you "yeah games ruin my life..."

I have to agree. All the questions trying to check if games steal our lives or something.

You're doing it wrong, OP. We play Quake here, we absolutely hate this game and want to stop playing right after we join a server and something stupid happens ;) And many of us do just that - quit instantly without any remorse! :)

So you're going to get some conflicting answers there - we actually invest time into this game because it's a sport and because we're building a nice community around it, but we rather have to force ourselves into playing, not stopping playing, haha :)

prepare for 10+ people telling how dumb your questions are and how they know more about your subject than you do

I'm not telling her/him that the questions are dumb, just that the results are going to be biased because they touch a very private subject. As gamers, we thrive to make our hobby more accepted...

Do you think that a PhD student and his supervisor would have missed a confounding factor that you thought of in 10 mins? Designing surveys isn't just thinking up questions at random, there are methods for accounting for bias.

I guess then your answer is yes, you have found a flaw in the 10 mins or whatever it took you complete it.

There is no fix, however brilliant, to the bias this questionnaire will have.

university mainly teaches critical thinking. either you never went to one, or missed the point completely.

i'm studying at a top100 university and have been surprised and disillusioned sometimes by the level of teaching. we are all human and make mistakes, so being a phd student doesn't make anyone "above the law".

and more ofthen than not the adjustment for bias is more emphasized on meta-level with mathematical equations when analyzing the statistics, rather than during question creation.

My argument is not "hes a PhD student, therefore correct". My point was these threads always attract people who come in and start pontificating on why the study is flawed, like this guy who reckons he "knew what [they] were trying to prove" just from answering the questions and has decided the "survey isn't going anywhere". Its pure ego wanking. Think about that: he doesn't know what the research question is, how the survey answers will be used, how the questions were chosen, how the survey fits in with the overall research etc. but still thinks he can discredit the whole thing in 10 minutes.

i guess we can only find out if this "survey is going somewhere" if we get the conclusions they end up with. maybe they wanted the participants to be defensive about this subject, so i guess you're right.

although i'm a competitive gaming junkie, i burn out easily by playing a lot (4h straight is the limit for me). i spend way more time watching streams, reading about gaming, interacting with other players than actually playing.

if something is bothering me on a personal level, playing a game is the least of my concerns. can barely get the motivation to crawl through my Steam backlog when everything is fine.

Why won't you spend moar time with your .ro fellow quakers?

After taking that survey, I feel I might need Gamers Anonymous.

Really though, I felt this survey will make me look like I have a problem while in fact I just have a hobby I enjoy :/. If you asked these questions to someone who really likes working out or some shit, you'd get similar answers, but when they do it, it's a hobby, when gamers do it, it's addiction.

Questions were weird but I answered them truthfully and I don't think my results are bad. In general I don't play games very often.

There is a goddamn huge difference between thinking about gaming and gaming being the 'dominant activity in my daily life'. You can't put this in the same question -- well, unless you want a very specific answer. I also feel like the second and third part of the survey were the same questions.

This was an iffy experience.

edit: Okay, thinking about it a second time, maybe the reason the questions went from being "I don't often" to "I often" to "I always" and back to "I don't", was so that the reader wouldn't feel any bias compared to all the questions being "I always" which could seem negative.

I say 'one more game' when I'm playing, but that's irrelevant when taken out of context. I also say 'aaah, one more try' when skating, or 'sure let's just watch one more show' when watching something..

i think they founded youtube on this mentality. i dont think its very common tho heheheheh
