Romero already released a new map in those last years (maybe last year, even) and it wasn't bad at all. He might not be able to make a full game, but he still has some mapping talent.

if you really think about it, its very rare to see artists (of any kind) to achieve that level of success in their career at that early of an age. Most people dont do that in their entire lifetime. Most people neither slay the dragon, nor build an empire in their lifetimes and idsoftware did both at a relatively young age. They were basically young adults. It also shows that its basically impossible or really difficult to replicate that kind of innovation again.

I thought megawad meant something else

technically a megawad contains a whole new set of 32-36 maps for either DOOM or DOOM 2. this one doesnt feel like a fully fledge megawad and just feels like one of those wads where it's just one episode.

Romero announced the game's title as Blackroom, on April 25, 2016, and started a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign with an aim of $700,000 to be reached in 32 days.[1][2] The project features John Romero as lead designer and programmer,[2] Adrian Carmack as game artist[2] and Dokken's George Lynch as composer;[1] about Blackroom, Romero said "We're developing exactly the type of game we think a lot of shooter fans want. It's the type of shooter we're known for, and the type of game we love to play ourselves. It's a skillful shooter, from movement to weapon and map mastery".

The game is set to be a first-person shooter in the same vein as classic shooters that Romero and Carmack first formulated in their early game development years. The game is described as "a return to fast, violent and masterful play on the PC."[1] The game will also feature various multiplayer modes along with its single player campaign, including co-operative play, deathmatch, and more. The controls are described as "fast, skillful movement with rocket jumping, strafe jumping and circle strafing," similar to the controls featured in a previous Id Software title, Quake.

He should still be working on this as this was confirmed in 2016, 2+ years game development should be a fair time for a small team for a modern game, just like diabotical. In the FAQ on the sigil page he hints he is working on something else, and he seem to be keeping contact with many if his coding friends. The game doesn't sound just as dead yet atleast but there hans't been much noise about it since the kickstarter.

this is the real treasure. imagine someone saying he did not put anything into it he could. this is true art. also he talks about what he wanted the people to feel.

today, everybody puts as much as possible into anything to create the biggest attention possible and nobody talks about how another one should feel. everybody just talks about how much money it should make and how great this feeling should be for oneself. look at this tim guy who obviously wanted to create a monument for himself talking about that he having invented stuff and grinding fame he did not even create. guys like him overpopulate this world and they are never any good for creating things people really care about.

This kind of convince me that he probably didn't develop at all through all these years and he stuck with skills that can only be utilized with old technology. It looks like in the Romero-Carmac conflict John was the one who was right.

Of course John was right. Romero wants to fuck off, that’s his ultimate goal. The real problem was, why can’t John just do all the work (already pretty much was) while Romero provides a silly innocent gaming face for the company. Shoulda been fine but John is angry and has zero tolerance for fuck offs.

Those games weren't only Carmack tech.

Remember it was Carmack who wanted to kill strafe jumping in Quake.

They should have been best friends considering their exceptional game development.

I guess they are just too different.

Romero seems to be a big fan of the gameplay we see in those old games while Carmack's focus has been the tech, and he seems like he has always wanted to achieve immersion through realism, which would explain why he has moved on to VR.

Honestly, I think Romero would fit in on this site a lot more. :D

Quake 2 SP was nice but mostly because of tech reasons. That time i wanted to see the nice colored lights. But apart from that the game felt like a hull which is missing something inside. Quake 1 SP was kind if cool but not as cool as Doom. Little bit similar to Q2 with the hull. But more inside than Q2.

But they did create Q3 without Romero. Maybe this would not have been if he would have still been there.

For me personally, I would agree Doom had the most soul.

But I guess soul isn't as important for a multiplayer-only game like Q3, which was really helped a lot by its ability to be modded.

The box art is pretty awesome though
