This is an informative "documentary" video about what id software was doing in between 1999 and 2017 in regards to the quake franchise. Specifically with a focus on the design decisions made with Quake Live during its later (more recent) years. Most of what Id has been doing with Quake up until the announcement of Quake Champions has been "under the radar" unless you keep up with the scene, so this should explain how and why Quake Live failed.
