I still cant see why people love this mode, at least some of them. Its fun with like 5-6 people or so, but most Servers seem to go up to 16 slots...which is just annoying to play on.

But i have no clue what the ideal size is for an ffa game anyway. this mode makes me rage more than duel...and thats something.

with the ql spawn system I think 4-6 people on small to medium sized maps is ideal for FFA honestly.

I always thought it would be interesting to have larger FFA maps divided into 3 discrete interconnected 'duel' style areas each with a mega, red and a yellow. Where dying in a particular area would cause you to spawn back in that same area, to have some semblance of continuity in FFA. If you were having trouble winning an area, you could try to move to another one. There could be a center room that spawns the powerup as well.

But loads of people thing more players = more fun, it's certainly more social.

With Classic it's just about bearable with 12+ for a while, it's pretty chaotic, with loadouts it's just way too chaotic even for those that liked 16 on thunderstruck.

Have you played on 50 player servers in CoD4? Or 64 player lockers/metro in BF3/4? People love their spamfests.

I guess i see both sides. Personally I quite like the loadout system in FFA to some extent, you can mess around with whatever weapon you want and I guess that's because we both like aiming at things! That said, getting shot by things you wouldn't normally expect from holding a specific area, could become increasingly annoying in a server full of top players! :D It feels like those FFA spawned servers that had all weapons on spawn.

Played like 6,000+ FFAs so far, main account's elo is 2748 with 70% win-ratio (2377 games), so I kinda think I have a bit of knack for this game mode and have a pretty good understanding about it. I'm not pro or anything though, just wanted to tell you beforehand that I'm not a clueless sub-20 acc lamer inventing rocket science.

This update just ruined the whole mode. It's just a random spamfest and map (/item) control (which was a key part so far) has prolly lost its meaning. You won't get rewarded if you control an area (mostly a certain weapon or armor) by playing good, because everybody spawns with whatever they want. Spawn-rape (which IS a definite part of Quake) is almost non-existent if you are playing with capable guys.
You don't have to fight to get a weapon, you don't need a solid plan to win. Just position yourself well and that's it. Sad.

Played 60 FFA with the new ruleset, won 55. From the 5 loss, 2 games had 1 frag difference and 1 game where I joined 1 minute later. trololo

It is saddening that I choose rg-sg on most maps and I don't have to go anywhere if I don't want to, just playing instagib-like, hitting 30-40 impressives per game and win. This is not FFA.

Also, unified ammo packs? Let's play a map, where there's a BFG and I'll show you how fun this new update is.
I was a BFG-whore before (like 6000 kills on combined accounts, with 65+% accuracy, so you can guess), love it with Quad / BS. Because it's fun :>, and the whine you get is priceless.
Now I'll become even a bigger whore, lol. But you can replace BFG with any other weapon; lg, rg, rl, whatever, you name it.
Now, you don't have to go to certain places on a map to refill your armanent. Just grab the nearest ammo pack and you are good to go. And every weapon of yours will profit from it. lol.
If this is not enough to make whoring easier than ever, these ammo packs respawns in every 10 s instead of the old 40. Even less effort needed. Just sad.

Also, mg is an optional secondary weapon? lol. Who will pick it EVER, if you can choose shotgun for close quarters as secondary? Any other distance will be covered by the primary weapon.

So far, you used pretty much every weapon, at least to a certain degree. You could make fragstreaks even with mg - despite the popular belief, it's a good weapon.
Now, you use 1-2 guns most of the time. You don't have to use more. Sad again.

I didn't mention hmg yet. Ridiculous. Overpowered. For example, played a few DM17 and I didn't even have to switch away. There was no point to do so. Hitting 40-44% with it doing the job on any distance (except VERY long range). But you can't start with a rail there, but you can with hmg. Figures. lmao

There used to be some FFA competitions sometimes, not big ones at all, but still.
I think there is ZERO chance of there being any with this mode, as this mode absolutely fulfils all the old dueller complaints about it being pure random luck.

I played those FFA tournaments, a few years back the -FFA- clans tourneys, and a while ago syas tourney. They were great fun. Not relaxed at all :D

I agree that the new standard mode for FFA would make a bad competition mode. But if there were such a competition, i don't think there would be many upsets. Perhaps some players with a more methodical style of play would be overrun by hyperaggressive rocket players, but those i consider to be the best, like med1xza or tony, would still win because they are just so damn fast.

I'd finally just got happy with a mouse setup that seemed great in both CA and FFA, but now I think it's just not fast enough for FFA any more, I keep losing out by a tiny number of frags to comparatively very inexperienced players.
It's very frustrating as 80% of my skill set has basically been entirely removed from the game.

There is zero progression now, you can't build up any kind of stack, you can't spend any time being stealthy as it's all spawn and lol backrocket.
You can't manage powerups, not because of the lack of stack, but purely because of spawn lol backrocket.
Without any innate sense of progression the game is just BORING.
Every map and every round is the same.

What are you saying? That default loadout is not on CTF? As I am sure there was no modification "wrench" to that server. Is there a way to check in your stats to see what "state" / mod it was?

Was playing with danstar on skyward 3 days ago (Thursday 9th Sept) link, I am sure it wasn't "wrenched" as it was "ranked".

Just join any unmodified ranked server.
You'll immediately see "Loadouts Disabled" and the weapons on the menu greyed out.
They're not 'Classic' though only Duel default stayed classic.
Default CTF servers do have unified ammo and the item timers.

Must have been a custom server then, unless you were on SpaceCTF, that map automatically gives an SG on spawn it is still working the way it has for the last couple of years. I don't think any other CTF map does that.

Well it was ranked and not custom, and said "Loadouts Disabled" - should say Loudouts "Partially" Disabled, as spawning with MG and DBSG is very effective. I just watched the demo to be sure.

Being shot in the back is not a problem itself.
Being shot in the back by someone that either worked hard to get some decent kit, or just very lucky shouldn't depress anyone.

Being shot in the back by someone spawning with MG wasn't a problem, plenty of time to turn and start dealing with it.

that's the whole thing summed up pretty much, highpowered weapons off spawn. Why should it be beneficial to "die" and spawn with the best weapons, seems to go against the grain.

I suppose sort of okay in CTF you can do a cheat kill yourself to drop flag, but that's about the only time, I think its sort of acceptable as its a tactic, but you lose your stack and weapons, so there is a slight balance.

Its not the highpowered weaopons of spawn that is the problem. Loadout is fundamentally a good correction to a basic design problem of quake however the new design needs adjustment mapwise and server wise.

You cant have the same player cap as before. And allowing 16 player on any of the small and medium size maps currently just breaks the game. Also the servers cant seems to handle it at all making the situation even worse.

I think that 8 players should be a cap on all FFA servers and some should have even less. DM6 would probably work well with about 6 players now.

what was wrong with it? It's a different game, they just want it to be more popular, like CS-GO. This is "quake". "quakelive" should just be called "quakeloadedout" or just a different game altogether. Quake the FPS, is learn with basic weapons, master it.

If you just want to "jump onto" a server every now and again then maybe loadouts are for fun. But for "retention" I don't see how this is going to help, with the number of other "jump into" FPS games around.

I mean its not like its "not fun" to get a good weapon off spawn, in fact what a god send. However it seems wrong that you get high powered weapons. With the loadouts as it is, this in CTF does seem to make a huge amount more emphasis on "Powerups", but 3x quad is not enough, and is a spam fest, quad should then be 4x, so you might be able to survive long enough with it to manage to get to base.

Thanks. For the first 3 months an egg or two for breakfast, chicken and brocolli for lunch, and chicken and salad for dinner. It was a boring diet, low carbs and no dairy products, but it worked and seemed to kickstart metabolism... trick is different herbs and spices to keep it interesting to some extent. For drink it was water or green tea, occasionally a fruit smoothie but i tried to avoid fruit where possible. I allowed myself a cheat day every week to eat out with friends, or just to curb the craving, but i would not over eat or go for carbs/dairy if I could avoid it. Most of it was in the diet, but some cardio every Friday (football) helped. I also lifted free weights to retain some upper body but i wanted to drastically reduce body fat % so mostly HIT based. I do not look as thin as in the video, but I own like two t-shirts that fit right now so it doesn't help. I'm no expert but ddk and zsx offered some early advice for me.

Building up cardio stamina is v g for reducing weight. one of the most important. If your not a runner, long fast paced walks (at your fastest capacity) are great for burning off excess. I built up from 5-10 minutes a day, to being able to do 26miles in 7hous 30 mins, and the weight just flew off.

I can imagine that it's boring, eggs and chicken are always great though :). Curiosity, really. I try to diet, time-to-time and was just wondering what worked for you, as it clearly has. no gay, though, eh!

You do realize fruit won't make you fat. The reason is the fiber in fruit slows the release of the sugar thus not causing an insulin spike as opposed to drinking say coke which doesn't have fiber in it.

Plus fruit has a whole range of anti-oxidants and vitamins which protect your body from disease.

FFA does what it says on the tin FFA - Free For All, just so happens you spawn with weapons, similar to weapons stay servers.

So I did a test:-
I rebound all of my keys to different movement , jump and fire changed to different keys and 4 weapon binds, so I had no idea what I was doing other than forward, left and right, just map knowledge, like someone who would be new to the game. And it was a blast, I was near the top, so I am not sure what the problem is here? (This was v mid range 1800 - 2450 elo's.)

1800-2450 elo in FFA is low skill. 2450 might not, if the player purposefully go noobstomping all the time and get constant minuses for the wins.

Qlranks probably puts the lowest tier4 player at maybe about 1600 elo I think, I'd still say 1800 is very low.
If muckyman was still bouncing from t3 to t4 and back we'd be able to estimate that more accurately as when he was that would have meant he was one of the highest t3 players / lowest t4.
He's 2300 now just from dropping into mixed level servers a lot.

didn't realise that t4 was at that level range. It's a hard situation, to manage then, unless there are "masses of active or new players" at varying ranges of elo, otherwise if you reach t4 your up against it.

It is low, believe me. Unless a good player continously roflstomping noobs, or the player haven't played enough games to represent his "true" elo.

Well I did think that :) But it does balance it out imo. You try to change all your weapons and movement keys, and see if that messes you up or not?. I take it most "new" players will be trying it from another mod, where they will know forward back left and right and jump and fire Mix those up and try it... If they spawn with a weapon, and can fire a rocket before they die off spawn, then its a good start. Instead if shooting mg bullets aimlessly.. At least they have a better weapon or at least a chance to get a kill against, 6-20 year FPS experience players.

I'm sort of for it and against the loadouts. But anything, if not something, to keep the player base higher than it is currently.

Higher elo players are usually still doing the best in the games, but the games are closer.

I don't use accel because i'm always swapping between games, I would if Quake was my only game though. I'm currently at 21.5cm/360, when I was actively playing TDM it was closer to 19cm/360. I'd say my tracking is not as good as it used to be when I played 3+ hours of Quake only per day regularly, but it's still okay!

About dieting, chicken sux if its raised with fish ration full of heavy metals, hormones, etc. Being slimmer doesnt means your lipid profile is improving, you should have done a cholesterol test before and compare it now. Eggs are awesome.

More than 30 mins of cardio just serves to age faster, look at all the football and other high cardio athletes, they age pretty fast. A bit of cardio is good, lowers your free radicals, once you go past 30 min, you start to create more free radicals than if you dont exercise at all. As anything in life, balance is key.

FFA isn't ruined because of "loadouts." I still win 90% of FFA games just as before. it's only ruined for those who are one-dimensional and can't adapt to various ways of playing. I still get 50-0s several games in a row if I'm trying, and am able to completely dominate the map and control items, despite what others have claimed here.

that doesn't mean it's not more challenging or that it isn't more gay. it certainly is--particularly the latter. I'm not sure why people would complain, though. it's obvious id has never cared about actual players, and especially not those who are competitive / involved in the "esports scene." that was the whole point of introducing "loadouts," item timers, and auto-hop.

that was also the purpose of breaking the netcode with backward reconciliation, allowing people who are on wireless connections and just spam rockets at the ceiling to get free frags while walking into a full room and taking 0 damage. this is what has ruined FFA more than anything else, by far. it's quite amusing going 50-0 and then taking more damage than anyone else on the server the next map because some warper joins the game. and by amusing, I mean sad.

If you understand the basic (and "advanced") concepts of playing "classic" FFA effectively versus competent players, you do realize the fact that the public mode is ruined because of loadouts, item-timers and unified ammo packs + reduced respawn time.

well, my point was more that FFA was ruined well before. loadouts was icing on the cake, really. but it isn't, by itself, inherently the worst thing imaginable. of course it isn't ideal, either. I'm not making any particular argument for or against loadouts, but I'm saying it's possible to dominate the game even under present circumstances.
