Because commercials don't just cut it, so a lot of shows film in front of a "live studio audience" (and announced as such). Ironically, most aren't being transmitted live, which means all the hype is for no special addition apart from letting the TV viewer know that they can purchase tickets.

I haven't really heard anyone say SNL is the best thing ever. I wouldn't have a problem with Seinfeld if people just went "I like that show". That's fine. But when they start going off how it's the best thing that ever aired on TV and if you don't like it you're not smart enough it's as if I'm hearing them say all those things about The Big Bang Theory.

For some people it is not enough to enjoy something, it has to be connected to some aspect of their superiority (intellectual etc.) over other people. Also note how easy, meaning little cost in terms of effort or explanation, is needed to add such qualifiers, all you have to repeat is how very delicate your subject is and everyone who disagrees just doesn't get it.

It seems to me that this happens to an unusual extent with things people deem sophisticated or, as I said, intellectual of some sort or another, even more so when they're actually not very well read (usually the most vocal ones). Reminds me somewhat of the phenomena when people with only little knowledge of a specific subject argue the most ferociously and hyperbolic.

This brings an interesting point about broadcasting stations. When HBO took Ali G from CH4 under it's wing, the quality of the show increased tremendously. They threw away the canned laughter and really refined the gem. Seinfeld-writer Larry David's new show, Curb your enthusiasm, is a HBO-feature, laughtrack-free.

It is unfunny. I don't care what it was like when it was airing, it's not that time anymore, it's 2013. Unfunny may be too harsh considering everyone has different tastes, but it is overrated in 2013 for sure. I loved Friends when I was growing up but I'm not gonna pretend it can hold a candle to any modern show I follow, for the sake of nostalgia.

I realize this post is 3 years old, but Seinfeld takes pride in the fact that his shows are about nothing.

And after investing a lot of time into stand-up comedians, I can see why he's at the status he is, even if he's one of the lesser funny comedians out there.

Seinfeld was a very interesting show, but Seinfeld as a standup really wasnt. He had only two things going for him, his charisma and his connections

This. The live show intro-outro-bits are the cringe-worthiest "every comedian ever" stuff. All of his so-called jokes are lame observations starting with "what's the deal with..." and "have you ever noticed how..."

I watched the first episode. I kind of skipped on watching Seinfeld the TV show during its run, and now I am thankful I didn't watch it: I know Baldwin was supposed to be the guest, but literally all the story-telling and actual control of the conversation was behind Baldwin. Not a good premise for a first season of a talk show (also he grins a lot, which makes him look like a bit of a monkey). Seems an OK show and worthy of watching if the guest is interesting, but out of lesser than mainstream US comedies on a nightly or talk show format, there are many better produced and funnier alternatives: Late Late with Craig Ferguson, Dave's Old Porn and that H. Jon Benjamin sketch show.

Seinfeld was better than this.

Oh, all right. Was a bit dickish for me to judge an entire person's career and past wprk over a show that might have been produced exclusively for an internet audience, rather than a netowrk TV one where the production values are much higher.

I've actually watched the Ricky Gervais one, and the same thing: the guest totally takes over the narrative, but at least Jerry induces some laughs with driving faust, but once again that is only through gauging Ricky's reaction.

I'm definitely watching more, I wish to check out the Letterman interview for the reason I stated above, also Larry David (his show I watched [+] ) and the Carl Reiner/Mel Brooks duo interview has the ingridients to be legendary.

I wasn't offended on his behalf or anything - really I'm not a big fan of Jerry Seinfeld at all, but I think Seinfeld (the show) definitely had something, whereas the 1 1/2 episodes I watched of this web series left me cold. It all felt quite smug and lazy to me.
