tbh, I read it wrong. I read "LETTER+NUMBER", and I got the Qpad MK50 on my mind. Didn't click the link or bother to "double check" until you said it had rubber domes, which I'm 90% certain the MK50 doesn't have.

Anyways, I got the 7G some year or two ago, and I'm perfectly happy with it. The WSAD keys feels just as fresh as the other keys you rarely use (like pause, scroll lock, print, etc).

Yes the MK50 doesn't have any rubberdome keys. The Corsair does.

If he is fine with linear keys and doesn't want a tactile feedback then I strongly recommend red switches over blacks (7G uses blacks) blacks are way too stiff imo.

I do play tdm and stuff, but with the advent of teamspeak the need for shortcuts went down a lot. Still, back in the day I had a very flexible pinky for red, mega etc.

My settings are pretty basic and can be moved to wasd pretty easily.

1 = gauntlet
2 = shotgun
3 = plasma
4 = left
5 = back
6 = right
7 = lg
8 = forward
9 = rl
+ = mg
enter = jump
del = gl
ins = crouch
uparrow = walk

HPE-87 Mech Keyboard here from qtan's store. Build like a tank, has n-kro with PS2 adapter, else 6-kro, has no num-pad (positive for me not so positive for you if you want to continue using it), using cherry MX-Blacks and love it. Cost was something like 65$ plus 22$ shipping for me so ~87$ (~67€) total. Has some funny gimmicks shipping with it like purple arrow-keys and shit.

Looks cool, but yeah, would want a numpad. Not sure if I will be able to stop using it after playing on it for 10 years.

The only real advantage to using numpad and arrows is that you can push your kb further to the left. But not having a numpad achieves that too and you have more buttons(with WASD opposed to numpad).

I still play wasd in other games (Hell I started playing quake there), so I can probably switch back, but I'm just so used to playing on numpad now (last 10 years), quake doesn't feel natural on the other side any more.

The main issue I have though is that the bottom buttons aren't that great on the wasd side. With my thumb I have space and alt, whereas on the numpad side I have enter, del and ins. Also keep hitting windows key by accident, so forced to remove the button.

The lesser amount of keys doesn't really bother me as I literally use every key on that side, even the arrow keys next to the numpad.

Jumping on the enter is better than jumping on space too, but that will probably vary from keyboard to keyboard.

Always been jealous of not being able to play russian style, and taking up a shit load of space at lans.

You have a whole row of keys under your WASD for your thumb dude.

I use my upper fingers for those keys, and it is basically the same on the numpad, having everything evenly spaced is better for me.

Like all products, it depends on your budget.

Also, avoid gaming products if you can.

Zalman K500 - I don't know if it's good among mechanical keyboards because I've only tried this one but I like it more than any non-mechanical ones. Small as fuck, which to me is important.

I'm currently using quickfire pro, I guess the HPE and other ducky spinoffs are out of the equation because you want 104 layout -

If possible try different switches before buying one - there are no real benefits in using black/red/blue/brown if you don't like the actual feel of the keyboard.

I loved blues but I wouldn't recommend them - used browns which are always recommended but didn't like typing on it - now I'm on reds which are quite ok I guess.

I have very limited choice unfortunately, it was basically down to the quickfire pro and the K70. I decided to get the quickfire pro (red) over the K70 as it was $100 cheaper, if I had money to burn I may have even go as far as importing something, but a premium gets added down here.

However the responses on the thread are very informative and I have been looking at all the suggestions.

K70 is not fully mechanical so you've made a wise choice.

I don't see the negative side of some non-mechanical media-keys (play, stop, volume, ...)

The only negative side is the price range - rubber dome keyboards are rather cheap, that's why they don't cost 80+€

If you're going to spend that much money on a board, at least pay for its actual value.

I just think it's a dick move to release it with a pricetag of an ordinary mech.

Deskthority is a very helpful resource on keyboards too, have a browse over there - or even ask the oracle for help.

One key thing worth mentioning is that mechanical switches aren't always better. I've tried every switch type out there pretty much and in the end I found I liked scissor switches the better than everything but Cherry MX Blues, it's all personal preference. Also, if I had to recommend you a mechanical keyboard manufacturer, go Filco. Overpriced for what it is but the quality is better than the rest out there.

I find the apple keyboard is great for work and typing, and silent, but it's not that great for gaming. It will be fine for casual gaming, but not something like quake.
