It's either that or theory #2:

If you don't do as good as expected versus your opponent, your skillrating drops.

Your skill rating only drops (if you win) when you play against players who are way below your skill level, regardless of how well you play against them. And it only happens in CA and TDM, in duel it's impossible to lose ELO by playing against someone vastly noobier than you, it's capped at 0.

Therefore there is only one explanation: cypher quit his matches.

i guess "logarithmical curve" -> "exponential response...".
imo, it makes no sense to fit ELOvsTime with an exponential function (you don't have ELO ceiling).

or .. did you mean logistic curve/function?
In that case, Carlsens' ELO curve is just a single ELO plot over time, while logistic distribution is just a fit of ELO ratings in a given population (=players) and it has nothing to do with time.
