I sure hope you aren't confusing Ireland with Scotland... UK is pretty dead, my area (Dundee/Scotland) only has 2 internet cafe coffee shops with bopter pc's not capable to run quakeworld :(

I live in Nottingham and have 11-14 ping to uk and like 30 to de, 40 to swe and could probably play elsewhere.. so you cna play in all of europe from the uk with the right net. same as any country.

Warwick's probably the best university/social atmosphere. I know a German dude who spent his year abroad there and loved the experience.

most people I know really dont like Warwick because its completely isolated and not that great. So if he's looking for LANs or whatever (can't imagine he's moving here for awesome internet) then Warwick's closest place is Coventry which I can't imagine being that large of a community.

London / Manchester.

I was with bethere internet, staying in London. Got 15 to 20 ping on UK servers, western europe was like 30 to 40, moscow was 80 to 90.

Depends entirely what your location selection criteria is based upon.

If you want the best ping for quake; then London it is. Also, make sure to avoid the infamous virgin isp at all costs. It's terrible for quake.

I imagine most of the gaming centers wont have a group of quakers amongst them, let alone 120hz screens.

As for lans, is the i-series still going? If so, that would probably be a fun day out for a lan-goer such as yourself :)

Unfortunately, you have missed the festival here in Edinburgh by a good few months; if you were coming over to the UK then I would definitely recommend checking it out; must see really.

Also, if your into motorsport/enginering like myself by any chance then the Autosport Show is a good day out.

Have only spent a couple of days in London visiting family; I only got to look around the Museum of Science; seeing a decommissioned Cray supercomputer and various other wonders was most enjoyable.

There is nothing in the highlands. Only sheep and wind. Don't go there.

From my experience:

Cool museums? Awesome QL ping? London.

Lots of awesome comedy and shows? Danny Macaskill? Edinburgh (during Fringe time). Big Castle also.

Want to get lost? Make sure to drive around the Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham or the Magic Roundabout in Swindon (only done the prior, and heard about the latter).

Want to get in a fight? Or stabbed? Glasgow.

Yep, i-Series are still going, they run pretty big events.

About ping, yep London is definitely the place to be, servers are in Maidenhead which is ~50km from London.
I have Sky broadband and usually get 30-35 on UK servs, 40-45 on DE/Italy, and a good 60/70 on polish.

Generally speaking (I heard there's life outside of ql :o), I think it's a pretty awesome city for a stay abroad, loads of different cultures, good cultural amenities (shows, concerts, parties).
Only downside I'd see is that it's pretty expensive.

are you gonna be studying there or what? either way, london is the most interesting place to be based really and i guess they have the best connections (according to others in the thread). haven't lived in the uk for two years now but every time i go back im surprised at how shit the internet is, but then again i guess its hard to compare it to scandinavian net.

i wouldn't base my 'year abroad' on where i can play ql, especially in the uk. everybody seems to be playing fifa xbox live threehundred60 and all those cool new fps games where you aim down the scope. if you wanna play ql on your year abroad go poland or moldova top#3 europ

besides you should be having too much of an interesting time on your year abroad to be sitting inside playing ql :)

I live between manchester and liverpool. Nothing is going on over there. Using BTWifi and ping to DEU/NLD is 45/50, to uk its 32. Its alright. Been to one of insomnia44 gaming events in Telford to enjoy sc2. Didn't expect to see ql there, but to my surprise there was one stand with 4 pc and guys(dignitas?) were playing QuakeLive. Even got a chance to play with them for a while :) Maybe we can arrange a decent Quake lan at insomnia44 festival? They do BYOC too :)

Didn't know you were there I was there too haha! Just to see a few of the cod noobs though :P I don't see why it isn't possible for another quake LAN to happen there, someone should look into it!

Yeah it seems pretty weird to pick the UK for the QL scene or broadband quality.

In my experience, most of the people from the US who studied at Edinburgh University went there either because they wanted to drink loads. (which culturally is fine in Scotland and less so in the US) Or secondly, they were probably not bright enough or rich enough to go somewhere good in the US.

European people who study at Edinburgh, usually do it for sex. Everyone knows that apart from America we have the most sluts. Or if you are a girl, you will certainly get a shag in the UK regardless of how ugly you are. And there is no danger of being called a slut because we all are sluts here.

I hope this clears up why the UK is a great place to study. :)
