What the big deal with a farewell to arms, I thought it was kind of bland.

The only thing I like is that he doesn't talk about war at all and suddenly realizes he lost everything because of it.

Because Hemingway wrote novels which were key to capturing the spirit of the early 20th century, the old man and the sea was brilliant but too short and dealing with less issues that farewell to arms (and a lot less to talk about character and what sort of conclusion they made at the end of story, and rather concentrated on the emotional journey itself and what it meant to them), but was too short, and "And Justice for All" seemed a bit too long and had turbo-slow development at the start (also, it makes me think of Metallica c: )

VERY decent book. Didn't describe sex like Bells' did though. This may sound like drunk rambling, but Hemingway made me understand sex and what it was all about. That part was so good. SO GOOD.

Try "Fabian" by Erich Kästner. Brilliant book that captures the spirit of Berlin a couple of years before the downfall.

used to like all of strugatskies stuff, own and re-read the entire collection multiple times. 'burdened by evil' was my favorite book. then i realized how much of it was shallow jabbing against ussr, probably just from Boris, knowing what he says nowdays. Arkadii always seemed like the level headed one, and he's been more grounded by the ww2 experience. so now I don't even have a favorite book, maybe by genre... i still like 'burdened by evil' and 'monday begins on saterday' a lot, deeply sad and funny, both.

I enjoyed burdened by evil, despite the heavy political undertones. Well, enjoyed is a strong word since I absolutely loved the manuscript part, and found the "real-time" diary a bit tedious although necessary to the narrative of the entire story.

And I enjoyed "Fairytale about the Trio" as much as "Monday begins on a Saturday", and in my opinion, the sequel was probably had one of the heaviest use of open sarcasm against the Soviet governmental system of the 30s-70s. The shock element made it get a cult following as it was very ahead of its time.

I've also read and re-read the entire collection multiple times (the 10+2-volume collection on hardback, a two-tome best of which is printed on $$$ paper, an some incredibly rare books and manuscripts I've got off the internet few years ago) and City of the Damned just appeals to me on so many levels, and every time I re-read it, it just opens more details in the narrative.

try reading polish writer Stanislaw Lem. If you like smart sci-fi it will blow your mind. Also: Catch 22 ftw.

not that much more, the 'cyberniad' is pretty childish. i know maybe only 2-3 other serious sci-fi books by him. what did you have in mind?

The Star Diaries, Solaris, The Invincible, Return from the Stars, Tales of Pirx the Pilot are just a few examples that come to mind. Not all of his work is what I would call a 'serious sci fi' though. Some of it is very light hearted (he even wrote some fun, simple tales for children on which I grew up) and those books I think have dated the most, but the solid social commentary core in his most prominent work and the vision of the future is still very strong and as I said earlier almost mind blowingly accurate and disturbing even. Bare in mind that I know Lem's work in it's original form, so I'm not sure about how the traslations hold up, but there's got to be a lot of good stuff in them.

polish to russian is much better than to english. ok, I'm not trying to be a snob, but I don't think it goes beyond what's been mentioned, so it's not 'few example', it's pretty much all I would read, and there if there actually more books by him like fiasco, I would be pleasantly surprised.

I actually have all of his books stacked nicely on my shelve and also know and can safely recommend them all, but only mentioned those which can be most recognizable and easiest to get for the foreign reader. so yeah, I still maintain, that there is much more. some of his books are hit or miss (especially in translation I imagine) and I can perfectly understand personal taste, but I'm a huge fan myself.

Can I ask what the general consensus is on pukka3t2 and nodm9(a) as cpm maps? That is, are they considered good maps?

pukka3tourney2 works just fine, nodm9a might be more familiar for players from other mods and games.

Yeah, pukka is played for quite a while and much more fun than on QL.

For nodm9a, I never played it (not (a) ), but with RG on it, it might be less +back than usual, then that's perfect for CPM. =)

I consider nodm9a an absolute shit map, pukka3t2 works ok but is a bit messy with all the tiny details in the brushwork. I consider it a good layout but with some technical misses...

Pukka3tourney2 is too flat (not vertical enough) for good CPM.

pukka3tourney2 has totally shity architecture which doesnt fit cpm. So it isnt a good map.
nodm9 is narrow and cornery, so should be as fine as cpm15

it's good to have different maps inside the mappool that provide different gamestyles, so players can get to pick/drop a map depending their preferences. Cups should give attention to diversity.

I'm not sure if everybody feels the same way about this map, I'm gonna ask signed up players about it and if i get more complaining i'll talk to shadyak and negotiate, maybe +cpm1a -pukka3tourney3, but then again, some people won't like 1a... we will see what happens till sunday

As Memphis wrote just above me, should there be a large amount of complaints/negativity then we are happy with altering the map list to satisfy the player base, as this is a cup primarily for them.

However, pukka3t2 is widely played on duel servers already and was in CPMDUEL #11 cup and fairly popular in #cpmduel (albeit not with everybody, some good duelers don't like it), and I was not even putting a second thought about pukka3t2, and was slightly cautious about nodm9/19 instead, as they are quite underplayed lately, and I wondered what the feedback would be, and it has been primarily positive on the 2 gaming portals this cup has been announced in (esreality and a Russian quake community website) + they are versions of known quake duel classics adapted for cpm gameplay (dm13 will be completely different) and before choosing them in the map list, they were checked out not only by me, but additionally by memphis/ahxnxa/several other good duellers to test for gameplay fluidity and the feedback was positive.

Also: remember that this is just the first edition of a series of cups, and since this cups is on a q3 platform, an insane amount of maps are available, some of them quite good, and maplist will vary on a cup basis (with the core maps present all the time), and we already have had ideas for other maps + suggestions for interesting duel maps people would like to see in a duel cup.

I understand why you would add it and why it makes sense for you to add it. I just really _really_ dislike the map and don't think it should be played. It's just my opinion and I thought I'd share it. :P

Any form of feedback is appreciated, and by looking at the maps played/picked during the tournament, we'd make a decision what to keep and what to remove in the following cup (although still heavily biased towards 3a/15/22/24 nonetheless)

Just a few words.
A map pool can't satisfy every player, that's why it is better to have a larger map pool and let the players pick during the tourney. That's my opinion.
And we can't always play 3a, 22 and 24.

Anyway, this is fun to play on new maps and that helps maps makers to promote their job.

it must be pretty frustrating to spend time in a map for nobody... It's hard to beat the standard maps which have been playing for ages, but we must give more credit to map makers including their maps in cups and so on... but the most popular maps are really good already and people would be like wtf if we remove any of those.

out of the "standard" maps, those are the ones I enjoy the most.

I don't so much dislike 3a as much as others, I think it's just boring and too figured out from being played so much. much prefer newer maps where you can be so much more creative with your play.

The biggest thanks goes to Memphis for co-creating this concept with me and making the most populated cpm duel cup for years, and to Ziggypoptastic/Zack for streaming for hours and staying an extra hour despite having to get up at 5am.

It's been an amazing experience, and a learning one with some minus points (some dropout by big names in LB, the final being 2 maps short, nobody wanting to go for the fucking twitter competition for beta keys (1 still available) but apart from that, shit went smooth and it was a really fun thing to do (albeit a draining one)

Next fightclub cup will be a simplified QuakeWorld Duel one-map tourney, followed by another CPMduel one a week after that.

If you want to take it to the next level, you should build something like the guy from fraglove (stahlaal) did. I thought about that for a while, but the main problem is to retrieve these xml files. They are only on the servers for the moment, and only if the servers admins save them. Then, stats are spread over all the servers, and need to have a special access on these servers to download the files.
For QL, that's not a problem for them since they own all the servers, so they can retrieve stats from their servers, all the more everything works with a browser.

But we are thinking about a way to gather all the stats for the next update of CPMA (v 1.49), but nothing has been decided yet. :/
