I'll be interested to hear some more opinions on the future of quake. of course, Slasher already has apparently decided it's dead with a tweet he put out yesterday, but nonetheless, should be fun.

I'm just going by what the tournament organizers/community is doing. I wish it had more events, but I'll keep covering it as long as things keep happening. I did have a quite interesting conversation with id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead at E3...

bottom line being: those north american dudes need to realize that europe, specifically eastern europe, is the centre of quake gaming right now, and that their loudmouthing ways are not well borne over here

Nope. For all those reasons (at least for the ones that are true), they might be angry at quake. Slasher isn't though, and Wheat doesn't care THAT much anymore.

You may want to fix your perspective. Just because it can't be easily exploited commercially doesn't mean a game is dead. Quake is alive as long as the community wants it to be.

You only view this thing from the point of a frustrated Quaker.

Claim all you want about the "community" being alive, but there were 70k people watching DotA. If i go to QLranks, i see just under 81k duellers, that including all the fake profiles. The player pool of Quake is dwarfed in comparison to the other games.

Almost everyone immediately recognizes the skill Quake requires, and loves watching it when exposed to it. Quake has great potential in that way. But don't try to claim that the community is worth taking into consideration by the big companies that gets to decide which game is more lucrative in regard of their sponsor money.

What Quake needs is a good game to come around that we can play that's new (Shootmania looks like it sucks from what I have seen).

He's been doing the same since day 1 and still continues to do so. He makes a living out of casting games he has no idea about (quake/sf4/sc2) purely based on screaming, and then moves to the next big thing saying he had experience on the prior ones.

Slasher is a good dueler actually.

If he loves it he shouldn't throw shit at it every time he has the opportunity. I'm not demanding he promotes the game (would be nice if he joins casting on LAN events like 2gd does) or that he can't have an opinion, but I've heard him say that at least 5 times.

There are lots of online tournaments going on all the time yet I haven't seen him casting a single zotac cup for example. This year there's been 2 lans so far but he's nowhere near quake, and there are at least 2 more this year (maybe 3 with ugc?) and I'd beat you he won't cast it.
Furthermore, I'd beat you that in those he'll mention his non existent quake skills to promote himself when casting other games. Djwheat is the fatal1ty of casting.

Would be nice if he casted some sort of quake tournament for it may bring in new users/viewers to quake. But most likely it would just be in vain for in his point of view it doesn't necessarily bring him any new users to his show and there could even be back lash saying ooo your so bad at casting quake stop doing it... furthermore say if he does cast there isn't any momentum for quake at the moment so his efforts wouldn't really do much. Djwheat can bring hype to things but by himself I doubt he could start a quake revolution lol

I get he could attract some people into the game if he casts some games and overall promotes it, which isn't an obligation, but lately he's doing more bad than good to quake. You really should watch his stream sometime.
That's why my personal opinion is that I hope wheat (not slasher) stays out of it and stops talking about quake completely.

Actually even slasher's statement is misleading when he says there's not much to cast or do nowadays, whereas there are tournaments going on every single day. If he were to say that on the show it would mean people not trying the game because they'll think it's dead.

Also he and his team aren't as big as you think. Theoddone draws 10x more viewers by his own streaming regular gameplay (right now 1.6k against 18k), and QL at least 3 times in group stage (2 days ago). A pokemon marathon has more influence.


edit: don't know why I thought slasher was better than he is. He's only 1400s elo in qlranks but he plays more or less continuously. Maybe 1600s material with dedication.

Actually, in some sense, he could help a ton more. 2GD showed he can do a lot even when the game is in a terrible condition.

It's not our right to ask for anybody in power to sacrifice everything for quake though lol.

of course, i think there are a lot of people that could do a ton more (or something, at all), but that wouldn't be the most profitable thing for them (or him) to do, or the least risky. and there is nothing wrong with that, but it's certainly annoying when they're just piling on with hyperbolic shit.

this is not really that accurate. There are tournaments that he can cast (at least there has been lately). Truth is that he moved on from quake. And he only wants to do "big" events nowadays. Nothing wrong with that but lets not claim he isnt casting quake because theres no quake events.

Anyway i dont see why wheat claiming quake is dead is such a horrible thing to do. It's pretty clear he means that there arent that many big quake events. Simple truth. We shouldnt really get so butthurt over it.

its an entirely different question whether he couldve done more for quake now that hes more of an esports personality. thats my main problem with him. he keeps repeating that he loves quake but at the end of the day he doesnt do anything much thats positive for it, when hes in a position to actually get something done.

really i think we should stop raging at individuals who have moved on. its not their fault that quake is in its current state. and i dont think them leaving is a major contributor. as much as id love to believe in the fantasy that if people started taking more initiative and doing more events for quake, it would somehow make a miraculous come back into the mainstream esports scene. (this is not to say we shouldnt do it, it would help keep the game alive at its current activity levels at least which is a good thing).

Nobody hates Quakelive more than ESR.

Mid-level q2 dueler at best. Adrenal1ne can speak much more about this in great detail with tons more experience than me, but that's not his style; slasher was good for practice among the 'pros' but that's about it.

I like it when Rapha wins and goes on the air for an interview. He is very well spoken, doesn't stutter, and his opinion on the game is always interesting from every perspective. If DaHanG won he'll just be talking about hardware and advertising his sponsors and his confidence in what he's talking about don't exactly shine as good as raphas.

If Cooller, Cypher or Av3k wins, their English interview has very limited information since it's their second language that they don't really practice. I would much like their interview in Russian but with English subtitles so they can go deeper and explain their opinion on the various topic in more detail.

There's so many likeable characteristics about Rapha. It's very hard not to like the guy. He has everything you'd want in a champion.

It's just a damn shame there isn't more tournaments. I really miss the IEM days.

Rapha is actually a fantastic champion. I hate his style because it is less spectacular than Cyphers aim rapes. It is less nerve wracking than coollers traps. It is less astonishing than k1llsens rails.

But I can't find any fault in Shane as a person or a champion. He's just great. Really, he is the crowning achievement that has been produced by the North American Quake3/QL scene.

yup, this is primarily why i like rapha, his character. if i'm honest, he's probably the only person i'd like to befriend among all of the pros. to provide an example, i liked rapha's speech at the end of the dreamhack final.

regarding his play style, i find his methodical approach reasonably entertaining to watch, and his aim is often understated. when he's on fire, his aim is up there with the best of them.

To be honest, that's almost the main reason why I started to really like rapha.
Esports needs to have this kind of figure, he is a decent looking dude, he is calm and collected on stage and during interviews, as you said his diction is perfect, rarely looking for words or anything.
That's the kind of guy that could promote esports on a famous tv show without being cringe worthy.

Plus he is probably the ony drama-free pro quake player, never bad mouthing, never raging, always being respectful with his opponents, it's really nice to see this kind of unsual behaviour, and it's also the right attitude to have if you want esports to grow.

I loved raphas idea for future ql tournaments, where each player and every spectator would kick in a dollar or however much more and then this would be used for the prize pool.

this idea is old as fuck... local internet cafe tournaments used to be sponsored by every player putting it money and then winner takes it all. would like to see that happen again, but for this to work we would need some kind of player divisions, elo limits etc.

djWHEAT isn't a Quake person, he's an esports person. He always go where the big shit is...when CGS was around he was all CGS, when Quake was all big back in the day CPL and shit he was all over it, when Quake Live was just beginning he casted Quakecon. And I dont know what he did with CS but I'm pretty sure he's fvcked around with that (prob during the CGS days) too.

Nowadays he jerks around with LOL, DOTA 2, HON, SC2 and all these strategy games cause every bum and his mother plays it. But us FPS players don't give two craps about sitting around watching teletubbies move around in LoL, we need some fast paced shooting. MANLY GAMES, NO PUSSY SHIT.
