linux has always been usable. people are just too lazy to fuck with it

there is a lot of literature out there that defines usability from a GUI point of view...
it is also other stuff like automatic hardware detection, or at least that there drivers available for your hardware ...
usability commonly is defined as easy to use ... that means few steps to reach your goal and intuitively realizing what to do in few time without having to read documentation ...
before you had to read like 3 man pages and several tutorials on the net to install something ... tbh. I still face errors and have to change function calls in c code from packages, because on my system-libs these function have different parameters ... maybe you can solve these problems with some application layer similar to .NET or JVM ...

tbh. I don't have any experience with running quake on linux ...
I tried once long ago to get it running on FreeBSD with some mesa-libs and stuff, but it was so slow that I have must done something wrong ...
afaik the hardware manufacturers don't support linux as well as windows, besides some faulty execution with graphical errors that happens sometimes on ati cards, the performance is probably not as good as on windows systems ...
I guess right now linux has become the perfect os for the academic and everyday user, that is not interested privately/professionaly in gaming or in multimedia ... multimedia only for listening music or watching films :-) ...

but linux might have a quite good future ahead,
if it gets the base of the users ... it will eventually also get the high quality production tools ... I guess to compete with linux, microsoft has to drop its prices for its os, because its os does not stand out anymore so much ... maybe they eventually have to go some route similar to free2play ... get money through support for companys, etc.
