For some reason, most programs don't recognize my iPod. I got the iPod manager for foobar, but nothing shows up. The same applies to a bunch of other programs. I reformatted it, because I thought the jailbreak might have done something wrong, but nothing changed.

Thought I'd let it be known that I ended up getting this to work, and it's what I'm using. I still have to actually have iTunes installed, which sucks, but I don't need to run it or anything. I just hate having an extra 2/3 processes in my task manager all the time, even if they don't really do much or take up any noticeable amounts of memory/processor cycles.

iTunes is terrible on windows. It's really good on OSX though. I only used it to copy music across to my ipod when I was using windows. I remember I tried ephpod, which was ok. For music playing I used Winamp though.

I guess I wasn't quite as clear as I could be in the OP.

I just got an iTouch 1G (I didn't pay for it; I would never buy from Apple), and I tried to copy my 7.6gb of music onto it. I can't select what music to copy, and what not to copy, because it loads everything from "My Documents", not just "My Music", and it duplicates anything where there's a single track in an album that has bad metadata. What this means is that it turned 7.6gb into 12.4, and fucked it all up. The album art is 80% missing, the metadata isn't even right, and it changed the names of a lot of tracks. It also grabbed a bunch of music that I purposely didn't put into my actual music folder because I didn't want to listen to it.

Anyway, I need an alternative OS for my iTouch. When I get back from Montreal, I'll give some of these suggestions a try. Except p0rts, just because he's p0rt and nobody can fucking understand him due to retarded sentence structure.

I would almost be fine with iPod + iOS, if I could properly transfer tracks manually (ie. access the iPod like it were a memory stick or something, which I almost can via iExplorer, but it only lets me browse some folders, and I can't transfer files).

most mobile devices need id3v2.3 ISO-8859-1 type tags, if you use mp3tag you can set it in options and rewrite your tags, and then they work in php tag readers too

only really need to use the ISO format, newer versions of just for nerds and you wont know the difference they just save a few bytes and have a cleaner structure, and they wont work on all players or dedicated hardware players

On windows I prefer Winamp to manage my ipod classic. However, it seems you just mismanaged iTunes. First of all, you can tell where to load music from and where not to scan for music in the options. It's not going to somehow disobey that list of directories. Next, there is the option to copy a file into the 'my music' or just to reference it, you simply needed to check that not to copy the file. Still, when it did this 'copy', the point of that was precisely not to 'fuck it all up' with the original files, so they should be fine, as long as they are not in the 'iTunes Music' directory. Lastly, no, there is no alternative to iOS. If you don't like iOS, you need to just get rid of your iPod Touch.

I checked options, and set the directories, but it still didn't load from there. I could probably figure something out with iTunes if I gave it a chance, which I won't, because it's shit.

Like I mentioned in the OP, iDroid is one of the many alternative OS's for iTouch. There are dozens, and I used to have a couple bookmarked on my old harddrive, but I lost them.

You can straight-up install whatever OS you want on the thing, but there are also some that are specifically designed for iTouch, most of which are based on ubuntu/Linux.

if you have an ipod you should use itunes. It really isnt that hard to get working, and it isnt shit, it is actually one of the best music players out there. I actually use it exclusively. Whenever i download music, i just drag it to the "automatically add to itunes" folder, and it organises it into folders by artist/album, and syncs it to my ipod, all automatically. It also has good sorting, playlist management and searches, so it is very easy to browse your collection.

There isnt going to be better firmware than iOS for the ipod touch.
Apple has billions of dollars to spend on it, and they also have a very detailed knowledge of the hardware that noone else can come close to.

I'm not really an apple fan at all, always kinda hated macs. Nevertheless I got an ipod classic today since its the best storage (160GB) for an mp3 player of a reasonable cost. Had no problems with hardware or software (itunes) at all. Also I use Beyerdynamic DT770s for my PC, I'm not a true audiophile but I'm quite picky with the quality and the ipod (with sennheiser earphones) performs perfectly for me. itunes is pretty awesome actually since its easy to use, and it finds the album covers automatically even though I downloaded most of my music.

Anyway, I actually did get iTunes semi-working, but it was still stupid because it didn't let me choose to only copy MY MUSIC, and instead decided to search half of my whole fucking harddrive for ANY music file, which ended up being a ton of shit that I didn't want (almost 5gb more than my actual music folder).

But, after a little bit of fiddling, I got Foobar2000's iPod manager working, and have been using that. It works perfectly, with no complaints. If anyone hates iTunes enough to have to use something else for their iPod touch, then this seems the best option, aside from a whole new OS. Which I do still want to try.
