American English is not rough - Americans have a variety of accents of which some are more rough than others but in total you cannot compare German or English AT ALL.

I do dislike the N.Y. accent though - All I hear is people rolling arses. (the letter r :P)

Rougher than German might be overreacting, but I do agree that American English sounds terrible in comparison to British English.

yeah and that too :D It always reminds me off how Dr. House aka. Hugh Laurie can fake an American Accent whereas when most actors do the opposite they usually fail pretty badly.

I, for one, used to have an American accent but now it is more British/Australian/American/German mix. :D And I tried really hard to get rid off my American Accent.

*Also note that some people have it easier to fake an accent whereas some people will never be able to change theirs. -> See Hugh Laurie - you might even know some people who are really good in imitating other people's accents.

I wonder if adapting the accent might be connected to Brits probably hearing more American accents in movies/television than Americans hearing British accents.

I just think it is easier to pull of the American accent for a Brit than vice versa. The same applies to Europeans learning English whereas Americans have trouble learning, say, for instance Danish/German or Swedish.

they fail, cos the british dont have accents, the upperclass sound all english and pompus, londoners/manchester/nottingham/yorkshire/bristol have accents. nowhere else

There are loads more than that though. Pretty much every large town or city has their own accent here, which is why I hate it when people say "British accent", because it just doesn't exist.

The only accents I find rough on the ears are :

Southern
Texan
New York (and Irish)

But saying that, I also find Scottish, Welsh, Brum, Scouse, Mank, and Southern, rough.

i'm from london and studying in sheffield and find the northern accent (generalisng here) HORRID. Only british accent I hate more is the welsh accent. Having said that I prefer the manc accent to the sheffield accent. Few people from the midlands I have just have 'null' accents, dull.

Mancs are so whiney really horrible accent, Yorkshire speak proper English (though Sheffield is different to Donny / Leeds / Wakey / Ponte / Barnsley / Bradford etc)

Actually, I can live with an America accent when they talk English, but the thing I really dislike about it is how they manage to butcher pretty much every foreign word or name they come across.

Sounds like they don't even try to mimick the actual pronounciation.

Imho american english is the opposite of rough in the ears, if u consider it together with german as a rough language.
I'd say scottish english is roughest and goes softer to the south, where american english sounds even softer.

Agaub depends on the region o/ got family in Fort William which can be hard to follow when in full throttle quite harsh. Whereas the softer southern Scottish accent on a woman can be amazing. You're probably thinking the more Edinburgh style movie accent ^^
