well for surfing and listening to some music ubuntu will do just fine, games on the other hand are probably going to be a problem...
but why dont you just flip in the ubuntu cd and try it out? you can do the partioning (if necessary) from the installer and it will create a dual boot setup where you can easily use both os.

i preferred ubuntu over windows but it always annoyed me that i had to switch to win xp for gaming. when i got win 7 i decided to get rid of the switching and just stay with it. still i am glad that i spent some time with ubuntu cause i discovered a lot of things, like the fact that i dont need to pirate ms office when open office is more than sufficiant for my personal and university work and so on

you might aswell go back to vista, if you're going to play games on it the chances are you will have less headaches, even if vista is nasty.

Love win7 or not, it does not represent 10 years of progress from XP and its expensive. Ubuntu usrs and linux ppl like imply their stuff is holier than shit (most of them are 21st century hangers), but in 6 months time you'll probably be asking for help locating a file or driver.

At least with vista it'll probably "just work".

use a live cd and boot from it, if you really like it and everything works, trying migrating then. Also consider Mint/linux.

I use Windows on my gaming computer and Linux everywhere else.
I find Ubuntu very nice for laptops, but if you're using it for gaming you should consider any of the windows versions.

If you're ONLY playing quake, which I doubt, you can safely switch to Linux

Win 7, it works really well imo, best OS ever.

if it was JUST internet, music and odd game id go with ubuntu or linux mint. i did try them and both ran so much nicer, the games i did try were easy enough to get working some with a little fiddling. the only reason i then went to windows 7 was because i was having trouble getting HD video to play properly so if thats not important i would go for linux. if you go for a distro like ubuntu you dont need to do much fiddling, although i did like it when i neeeded to, learning some basic commands and how to use the computer.

however as i said i went back to windows 7 as i needed hd video, and then kept everything to a minimum.
why anyone would recommend vista over windows 7 is beyond me, uses far more system resources.

Less hassle with refresh rates and mouse hz.
Personally had no trouble with the first but second one takes a lot more steps compared to vista.

ubuntu/mint etc is free :D

main one: mint debian is a rolling release, which means that you're always up to date with your system. there are no release cycles or anything like that like there are with regular mint/ubuntu.

mint 10 on the other hand is based on ubuntu. which, among other things, means you can use canonicals repos which can be quite useful. there are repos for regular debian as well though, so you should be able to use the same applications either way. the canonical repos might just be a little more convenient.


if you're newish to GNU/Linux I'd say you should start with Mint 10. since it works about the same as ubuntu you have a community which is more catered towards new users.

I've installed ubuntu 10.10 on my machine and I'm amazed. The performance and the look really is exceptional. I will definitely be switching over once I get a work laptop. In contrast my windows 7 system is starting to feel very very bloated. I should probably do a spring clean, it takes FOREVER to start up and I'm getting random freezes every now and again.
