They actually haven't drawn seeds yet, and this is simply an indication of which players will be in which seed pools. Each group will have 1 player from pool 1, 1 player from pool 2, and 2 players from pool 3.

Systems which feature dropping before picking are much more "stupid".

It's not enjoyable to watch people playing the maps they are less good at nearly all of the time. These are the best players in the world so let's have them playing their best maps in their best form and have the best games. Best system = pick pick drop drop (for Bo3 and with a 5 map pool).

The player can pick one of his best maps, knowing his opponent may drop it next, or he can pick one of his opponents' worst maps. That way there is both strategy involved and a risk/reward element depending on which way the player goes.

You say it favours one map wonders. Firstly what is wrong with being really good at one map and wanting to play it? Do you somehow not deserve to win a map because you're not really good at the others? If you're the better player and more well rounded then you should be able to beat him on his best map also. Secondly you're completely ignoring that it in fact leads to the opposite of teams/players becoming well rounded: they just throw out their worst map and never learn to play on it.

See Na`Vi throwing out nuke at every tournament after IEM European Finals. Then at GameGune they have to play it twice and two losses is the result. That's the best team in the world being the opposite of well rounded and directly thanks to the map selection system you're supporting as the less-"stupid" one.

Nobody wants to see Federer playing Nadal in a grand slam final on a car park because one threw out grass and the other clay. The point of elite international competition is not to play the maps you're worst at all the time in every round. That's just garbage. Two players playing a mixture of their worst maps does not make for great matches.

For the sake of the example: Thorin beats Carmac 6 times out of 10 on all maps in the map pool except for Aerowalk, which Carmac wins 8 times out of 10.

In a best of 7, Carmac's chances to win are 40,04%.

In a best of 3 with dropping, Carmac's chances to win are 0,352.

In a best of 3 with picking (where Carmac picks Aerowalk), Carmac's chances to win are 0,544.

Of course you can use math to pretty much show any kind of extreme, but I just wanted to point the main thought behind the dropping thing.

Drop drop has been used for years in many and we did see players playing their best maps, even in best of 3's. The difference is that we saw good matches, where both players were comfortable with the map. Not foregone conclusion blowouts.

As far as well-roundedness goes: it does win you tournaments. Look at rapha. He's definitely a good example that it's good to be good on all maps ;-)

Here's an idea that I think works really well, and is inspired from American football:

0) In case of equivalent seeds (such as two #3 seeds in this particular tourney), a cointoss is used to determine who will call the cointoss for step 1. Alphabetical order will be used to decide who is Heads and who is Tails. This concept is similar to the method used in poker when determining who the button is at a brand-new cash game table.

1) The higher seed (or, if step 0 was necessary, the player chosen in that process) will call the next cointoss. If the seeds are equal, only one cointoss is necessary in any circumstance. Otherwise, the lower seed must win two cointosses, whereas the higher only needs to win one. Probability theory says that the lower seed wins in this case about 25% of the time. Fair enough?

2) The winner of the cointoss or cointosses in step 1 can either choose to pick the first map or drop one (much like receiving vs. kicking). (From here on, that player will be designated as W, and the other will be designated as L).

3) Map selection will go in either one of the following orders depending on the outcome of step 2:


Feel free to nitpick at this idea, but the fact that the lower seed can get first choice and that this system can make for some pregame mindgames can easily make things interesting.
