It's not the same a user made map than a map included with a game, no matter how free or amateur the game itself is. A user made map is something (most) companies consider not worth to sue, although I've seen some cases of "cease and desist" from Epic Games. Anyway, you shouldn't be worried. They can't include those maps in the game, but nothing stops server admins or users to put them on the servers.
Yeah, it just failed horribly for BMX. Think of a better name and perhaps we'll use it, PMX seems fine so far, you don't pronounce it, you say the letters.
difficult to think of a name for something I've no clue about (maybe my bad, havn't much followed news about it)
what about "cheese n'skate" ? see, not working
I'll presume pmx is a quake clone, what about "boing-boing-boom-arg" ?
or at least make it pronoucable
pmx goes for promod x I guess, ok call it POMOX. hell, what. a. good. name. well at least it's funny, easy to pronouce and easy to remember, and has a little radioactive potatoes flavor
"experimental". the EVOO version, endorsed by rachel ray, comes later. :P
pmx was stonewalled for months by a specific core piece of the gameplay that i consistently rejected because imo it simply wasn't good enough. that's finally making progress, and afaik there are no more major roadblocks ahead there.
i have no idea when there'll be a public release, and like ix says, there's no point hyping it up until that's ready to happen - but yeah, there's Much Stuff happening with it quietly.
screens?
description? (quake clone? for example same weapons)
links?
netcode working properly? (otherwise it will be a new pk)
I don't have any hopes on new "fast" fps games really, because qlive has a big advantage that they won't get even if they are done properly: people are playing it, and you meet again with old school guys because it's incredible easy to start playing it.
For example wsw 0.2 was a great game but it was not played massively and it had no big tournaments, coverage (in which qlive is awesome), etc. Then it turned worse and worse and worse to the point that it's considered dead by the remaining community (just look http://clanbase.ggl.com/news_league.php?lid=9701, or closed topics on their forum). This happened because qlive turned open beta, wsw 0.5 delayed for lots of months (I think it was more than a year actually, or were it two?) and gameplay-wise you have to hit 5 rockets to get 1 kill (or a million railgun shots) because jal likes low-scoring games. Even if most people don't dig cyberpunk theme, terrible sounds and wheat's announcer voice all that was on 0.2 and there were people playing it.
(whine complain groan meh)

Well, that depends how different is it from the old dm games. If it's gonna be yet another variation of Quake, as the rest are, then I'm with you. A waste of time. Ix has said they want to do something different with PMX, tho, and that's why I'm still interested in seeing it.
Obviously you're aware of the similarities between the first person shooter gameplay known as "VQ3" and the turn based strategy game known as "chess". Anyway, PMX is basically like "Go" by which I mean "it has more strategy" because I read somewhere that Go has more strategy than chess actually?
Well it's sorta like go mixed with tennis and you now how in go the horsie moves in a luh shape? well they don't do that in PMX but the rocket launcher is kinda like a tennis 'bat' (as they're professionally known) and when you're shooting rockets back and forth that's a bit like tennis vote BNP
screenies or gtfo.
being serious tho, the community doesnt actually have an idea of what PMX is, how is the gameplay, what are the improvements compared to CPMA, and in what way we could help you.
it would be much better if u took the path that cspromod is taking now, by having a website with news about the mod with screenshots, videos etc, developer logs, a twitter for quick updates of ur work and a forum for people to discuss/brainstorm/suggest anything related to the mod, like gametypes or new features.
A new iteration of Promode gameplay with standalone assets. It wont blow your socks off but it will be good and it's not ready for hype or feedback, when it is we will be inviting people to help test it.
Dev blog: discussed methods of non-linear deceleration and how to improve some movement corner cases we don't like.
Not very exciting. :P
Edit: awesome new texture artist joined the team, that is a little more exciting.
I'd rather have them pretty much finish the game before the nutjobs from the community get to spam the idiot suggestion posts and get everyone worked up and raged (note: ix aboard). :>
devs with clue + testers with clue > raged devs + random nuts spamming forums with useless/half-done ideas
That's up to id, I have no objection to them including CPM gameplay as long as they do it properly, which includes things like stepup rules etc, not just the weapon damage values.
i would guess he did 90% and maybe supervised a few others doing bits. But he did say it was just a fun project at first (think this is right).. nothing majorly serious.. speak with ix he knows more.
Indie games take several years to be made. They can't really be compared with DNF in any shape or form with a straight face, plus it's only been less than three years so far.
In any case and since you are comparing the two, Reborn is only a few months older than Reflex is (June 2012 to December 2012), so if criticized it can be said that both are almost equally delayed, and -most importantly- Reflex as a concept is what, over 10 years old by now? Same developers, third exact same project worked on by them without a definitive release as of yet (CPMA, PMX, Reflex); the same that happened with DNF.
Reborn is taking some months longer than Reflex in the planning phase precisely to not make its mistakes, which is a better approach on the long run. Unlike Reflex, what 2GD wants is to have a comprehensive Kickstarter page from the very beginning of it, that shows the concept, the project as a whole, videos and a developed product, plus have a cult following himself and the project in order to have donations since day one. He also has been building the experience and connections in esports in order for the game to be at tournaments that matter, since without those then might as well stay with Q3 for another 10 years.
That way the Reborn devs think they will get more than $0 from the campaign, that finishing the project won't take three tries (and counting) and ensure that the game will be more than a footnote in some lost website.
The Kickstarter will begin in May, soon enough not to complain for it taking too long.
edit: Come to think about it there was no need to make a defense here (for the 99th time), since Reborn will be financed by dota players and certainly not by ESR users. At best 20 ESR users have ever donated anything meaningful to tournaments and others, which is not enough to fund a game, and there's only 30 people playing Reflex right now at this peak hour, according to steamcharts (peak of the day was 35). Lots of talk here but no substance.
The same can be said about the genre as a whole even: people interested in the FPS genre don't really speak with their wallet nowhere near as much as fans of other genres do, including donations to Kickstarters, access to paid pre-alphas, paying for microtransactions and so on.
>Reflex as a concept is what, over 10 years old by now? Same developers, third exact same project worked on by them without a definitive release as of yet (CPMA, PMX, Reflex); the same that happened with DNF.
Yes, because it has always been hidden by Q3, it looks like q3, it has the weapons q3 has, the models, the maps, etc... But now it is a completely different thing, Reflex is a title of its own, not a mod. As a concept it plays quite well in my opinion... You don't have to hate a gameplay you don't understand, just say it's not for you.
reflex coder works full time on this and has shown incredible skills and problem solving. Thanks to this things will materialize slowly. They have a solid team despite being 3 guys + random freelancers... do you have any idea of what that means?
However, i indeed think kickstarter was shit for reflex but also nobody expected them to reach 80k AUD. Your words would be different if their limit was 80k and they were preparing a better Early Access. Did not happen, too bad, one month later you could install reflex in steam (What warsow promised for like quite a while). Does anyone know the total number of sold copies? I think we'd be surprised.
Besides, being a quake lover, you must be really stupid to hate a game like this one. I know it's biased because if it wasn't linked to cpm anyhow you'd be in love with it. Do you think Reborn is going to be VQ3? The spiritual successor if anything like 2GD loves to call his game...
I just hope both projects go ahead because quakelive, warsow, qw, cpm, xonotic, etc... are outdated games with hardcore communities leaving no room for new blood, this is the only mindset anyone in this forum should get. I dont care newborn or 2gd get to make their game, i just want a new game for this genre because it deserves to be on the esport scene, there's just so much history behind it to just dissapear with bethesda's quake. So sad.
The good thing about having two similar projects is that there's gonna be competition between the two, want it or not. It creates will power to make things better and eventually both products gonna be more polished from pushing each other; ronaldo and messi wouldn't score more than 50 goals each season if one of them did not exist. Competition makes humans get better at things.
In the end my rant is about that most people here don't see reflex in perspective, including long development times (reflex will at least take from 2012 to 2018 to be in a state that can be considered a complete game), that those three devs failed to complete two previous projects very much related to this one (over a decade so far), that cpm gameplay is not appealing to the masses so reflex will be just a niche within a niche (no official presence in a single major lan and will be hard to find public matches with players of the same skill level) and that there's many other upcoming games. The same support from a vocal minority happened with warsow and I think the same reflex will end up with the same result: nothing worth even mentioning.
About the alleged support from the community, steamcharts doesn't lie when it comes to steam exclusive games. Yes it doesn't say the total amount of purchases, but it does say the peak amount of players it gets a day is around 30, which is nothing, and the graph shows a steady decline.
What I like about reborn are the focus on planning before acting, with the lack of planning being the reason why reflex struggles with funding, and that it will not be another quake clone, since every single one has failed so it's rather naive to think another attempt will succeed and also that to me a "new" game has to have new gameplay instead of copying something existing. If the final version of reflex still has its current 100% cpm gameplay then it won't be a new game.
try and play the game,
I played some duels already and had a lot of fun,
so far I have not experienced any bugs and the game REALLY IS WHAT QUAKE WAS MEANT TO BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For me after Quakeworld and Quake 2, Quake was always a deception it still had the flair, but it lacked here and there the right ingredients to make the game really cool ... Reflex has it all! Reflex is the true successor of Quake and brings deathmatch to its finest ...
Thumbs up to the Reflex Developers!!!
I hope many people will catch on the Reflex train, because it is the only game that is really hardcore and not dumbed down ... there is so much joy in it, there is a reason chess is regarded much higher than checkers for example, its just the depth and complexity, the possibility to develop real skill, to expand your mind in so many ways!
I dont care what the current market wants, I mean isnt a fps not already too complex for most people, they need some scripted movie with some dumbed down 3rd person shooting action scenes in between like in GTA or just look at all these scripted dumbed down shitgames out there for mobile or the wow/diablo clones out there ... if this is what the youth wants, i.e. grinding/buying fakeskills in F2P games and lose many IQ points on the way ... let them do so ... I prefer to develop real skill facing opponents on equal grounds, because this is the real thing!
EDIT: And the game is fully playable already, there are many different maps, you can play duel, ffa, arena already ... maybe the community features around it and a better GUI still lack but the core is there, you can fully play the game
I will have to agree with this except for the Reborn support, I don't know anything about it.
I don't see any future in Reflex, at least not from what I've seen so far. I don't see any future for the genre to be honest. I don't see anything that could truly revitalize the scene.
Reflex basically has players hyped over a couple of fancy features, shinier graphics, old game-play which is still fundamentally outdated for the average consumer out there. The Reflex train came and it will also go away if it is not going to show some serious innovations, otherwise it's not even going to be able to compete with the rest of clones. Alpha stage or not, optimism is not enough to produce success, nor I think it's wise to put so much faith in such a long shot.
PMX will be the best game, that nobody plays :(
