Wide open spaces. That's what I personally don't like =/
And new gameplay elements? If you mean racing, I don't want any new gameplay element. I want Quake1-like singleplayer.

It's a repetitive totally linear duck shoot vs zero AI enemies.

You fight crap soldiers from beginning to end with the odd helicopter or tank thrown in as if it's something special, not even attempting to give you something as simple as making you fight other special forces (ie enemies that aren't thick).

You also use pretty much the same guns from beginning to end and the combination of it's pacing and tying you to a squad leaves you very little room to play around with each encounter, in the same way HL2 EP2 is fecking annoying by giving you Alyx to look after 24/7.

It also re-spawns enemies unless you play the scenario how it wants you to play it.

It's one of the worst FPS games I've played in recent years, but it's got so much gloss and everyone seems to have forgotten what a good FPS is like...

and this too : if you don't go at the intended pace but rush, chances are you'll pop up in a respawn room (which seemed empty 2 sec before) with 5 freshly respawned enemies, and die
cod4 isn't a bad game, but isn't very good neither ; kind of average gameplay if you like to play with your style rather than being infinity ward string puppet

i mean if you dont like fps where you have ai support characters and you dont like fighting a lot of enemies and you dont like linear gameplay, then its obviously not going to please you.
for me, all this is fine. every cod game has tons of easy enemies and i can enjoy both linear and non linear shooter cause both have their pros and cons. the atmosphere that cod4 creates would be impossible to do in free environment. maybe you should just go with the flow of the game or leave it at all and play something like stalker

pk overdose was an amateur mod that People Can Fly bought to then sell it as a regular game, so I'm confident about the next pk since it should be made by PCF and not just bought from an amateur mod team

Overdose was made by Mindware Studios which was first intended as a free mod..

PK:R is made by Homegrown games, a studio mixed with some amateurs from the PK Scene and some professionals. Some say that they got some guys from the old PCF-Team.

Doesn't mean the game needs to be handicapped.

All they are saying is that they are making sure it is playable and fun with a controller. This doesn't imply that it will be unplayable and boring with a keyboard and mouse.

quake wars or quake 4 did not look awesome(and were not really made by id, to be honest, although they did have the logo on the packaging and did quite a bit of decision making).

Doom 3 was fun and awesome for two hours, then repetition set in.

I think they could do a lot better on this if they learn their lesson.

Heh..I like the little info box on the last page, where they brag about how they are one of the few developers in the world, that has complete flexibility when it comes do deadlines, and this in turn allows them to polish their games.
Quake 3 polished? Nah..
Quake 4? Not really
ET:QW? Nope..
Doom 3? lol..

Polished should mean they have time to add extra things, that other developers don't have the time to focus on. It should be a luxury but instead we rely on third party moders to come up with 95% of the stuff that we need for competitive play. Quake 3 would have been dead without OSP in the early years, and CPMA in the last. GTV was and still is a joke, MVD support didn't come from ID, the netcode isn't more smooth than EPIC or Valves titles. Even in UT from 1999 we could change the hud in more ways out of the box than in any ID title and so on.

I think polish in most developers sense is making the game mod friendly to begin with, which only a handful of developers do.

Does the article mention anything about how mod-friendly Rage will be?

idTech 5 (in some form) would be really interesting to see on the iPhone, but I wonder if they would be able to do a project with it and keep the $10 price point. Doom Resurrection seems to be doing alright, but who knows if it meets their expectations.

Here's hoping Carmack will do it either way.

Yeah.

I like it when developers actually create an interesting mechanic like that, even if it was just because Carmack was worried about FPS issues.

I recall Carmack writing on his rocket engineering-blogg (after the $35,000 rocket unexpectedly blew up) that "It’s a good thing Doom 3 is selling very well.."

Not really, the PC audience seems to be far stricter than the console audience.

On consoles all sorts of shit FPS games are considered good and sell quite well. On the PC they don't even get pirated.

Yes:
- More people have consoles than games worthy PCs
- More people on consoles don't know what a good game is
- Console games are more expensive
- Console gamers are more easily led by magazine(s) and hype

Thus consoles have a bigger market of people who have no idea what makes a good game who are willing to splash more cash on them.

The piracy levels aren't actually that big for PC games (There are exceptions of course but that's usually due to the lack of demos), it's just that you can't get away with releasing a sub-standard product as much as you can on consoles.

evidence ?
imo it's huge, and that's the n°1 factor why video game industry went to consoles market
anyway, whatever, all that is just opinions tennis, useless blabling when lacking facts

just for the sake of it : it's just that you can't get away with releasing a sub-standard pc product since we-the-leet-pc-gamers-not-these-stupid
-consoles-monkeys-bastards gonna easily pirate it without any remorse

It's not the number one factor that's for sure, the market is just much bigger and forgiving on consoles.

Piracy is just as easy on consoles to be honest. It's not about being "leet PC gamers", just look at all the games that sell on consoles that are terrible by any standards.

AFAIK only for ps3 no exploit was released until today, so on every other console you can pirate games as you would with a pc. Also, don't most new games come with a licence key for online play like q3? That's a pretty good solution I would think...

it's easier to pirate on pc ; first, in order to pirate on console you have to have a pc (and not be a total newbie at it too) to get the iso, etc. more work, less easy (and for some consoles cracking them means put a hardware mod, which means your garanty will be dead -something you would not do with a xbox360)

licence keys for online play : I've played cod4 on cracked servers with a cracked key (the only thing that prevented me continuing was that PB at some point has been removed of these servers and a tsunami of cheaters flowed in and ruined the game -smart move) ; every mp game is nowaday cracked to be played online either be on a kind of vpn stuff or cracked dedicated servers

It's true that pirating is a lot easier nowadays. I guess it's time for some new marketing ideas for the gaming industry.

Quake Live seems promising in terms of a new strategy, also Blizzard with their battlenet and Valve with steam are selling pretty good aren't they?

I think piracy will never be so "mainstream" that game developers go out of business. Musicians still make money, piracy didn't kill the music business, and I think nowadays everyone has a few (illigal) downloaded mp3 somewhere saved....

Actually I would like to see bittorrent die, because then it would at least take some effort again to get warez.

Also, do not underestimate the power of marketing and hype. Those gamers who look pedantic for every info and detail of a game before buying it are not the majority

pirating is too mainstream now. there is just too much of it, that's why graduated repression laws are poping out there and there ; warez needs to be back to the few power users

I guess big marketing and hype for hollywoodstyle blockbusters games is made for the youngers and/or the stupids, those who arn't really able -yet- or willing to pirate (editors arn't afraid of puting big money in it)

quake live could be so much better (and furthermore, easily for the most part, imo), could be (have been ?) successful

one thing for sure, the "I've found a software/hardware way to prevent pirating" will never work, it would just be another game for crack teams

valve seems to be going good, partly because of the steam platform, selling other companies games ; otherwise they get their share of pirating. hl² must be top ten pirated game or something ; maybe hence why they concentrate on mp games (tf2, l4d, l4d2)

Sony did an amazing thing with the ps3, they build in the ability to run linux on it (a bit crippled, without the graphic acceleration or smth., but still)! They eliminated the main drive for hackers, the challenge.

That's why counter-measures for preventing piracy or cheating are bound to fail. It's like an endless game between hackers and developers, but the hackers prove to be more skilled, innovative, and almost always persevere time and time again, because that's what they love to do.

Piracy is the #1 excuse for moving to the console market. The truth is that PC gamers are much more selective than console gamers. A lot of the PC gamers I know primarily plays online games. It ranges from Quake to WoW, but few of them play a lot of single player. The people I know who are primarily console gamers, play primarily single player or offline games. After seeing some of the shit they buy, I can understand why game developers like the console market so much. The console market has a lot more people willing to buy bad or mediocre games than the PC market and most of the games coming out today are not even worth the bandwidth to pirate them, much less the amount they charge for them in the stores. The game companies see that they sell more of their crap on consoles, so they decide to focus on that. However they don't want to burn bridges so they use piracy as their excuse for moving to console.

a) see call of duty 4 (there has been some debate on the 'bonus round' at gametrailers.com about sp vs mp vs coop etc - i suggest you watch that)
b) not doing ql (as in they changed jackshit in the 12+ months since the beta started so basically their effort is close to 0 and its just another way to make money off ads)
c) not giving it away for free (see the ads bit)

A) One example isn't enough to change the basic fact the majority of games need to be single player.
Secondly COD has a big MP base, quake has small player base in comparison, so it needs something to attract people who don't quake.

B) That's a pretty childish perspective. The game is still being developed and better than most the crap you get on consoles.
The changelog has been updated in that time.

C) Almost everything is ad based. Even this website.

Its free in the sense that you don't have to pay for it.
So its free in the deepest sense.
