I sucked becasue my keyboard was broke. I could not move left most of the time, which made it fun when it came to moving about the level and dodging!

As a result I did shite and does not represent my real skill, but if you want to take single performance and skewer it for your own biased views, then here's a link to me taking redemz (one of europes top players) into overtime.

if I just ignore myself, mice/mats/settings just sink in within a few games

the keyboard thing is understanable tho, my mouse is fucked in a similar way and would prove impossible at a lan event.

I'm not saying that his keyboard wasn't screwed, just wondering what would drive a man to butcher a mouse so senslessly for really no real reason!!

Hell when I got my Copperhead it felt wierd because I had been used to an Intellimouse Explorer V.3. I had to get used to a much higher sensitivity and adjust my hold on the mouse because if I held it like I did the old one i was holding it with the side buttons, however after about 2 weeks I had adjusted and I am now fine. Surely it would have made more sense to adjust to the equipment that you are going to be using? Things like mice and keyboards do tend to go wrong, and if you have adjusted to a stock model of a mouse/keyboard you shouldn't have too many problems swapping in a new one when the old one goes kaput.

The reason I drilled holes in the mouse was nothing to do with being nutty. Before it I used an intellimouse which seriously weighed about 3 times less than the Logitech's.
I used a mouse at work most of the day and wanted as little strain as possible on the wrist as the mx510 was heavy. The holes made a huge difference. It made it about 40% lighter, whilst keeping the exact same shape.

Guess what, i have a 22" monitor at home my desk is approx 1m by 2m and i play with my kb and mouse next to each other about 1m accross the diagonal of my chair, i also have a huge leather chair with a strong high back support. I have a x850 XT and a 3800+, oh and a XFI-Elite Pro. Making out you were 'hard done to' by not being used to the circumstances is such a joke, it's LAN get used to it.

It's not a joke when I had less than 30 minutes to get used to it. You were already setup and playing when I arrived at about 10:40. So you had a good 3 hours of warmup, assuming you did not arrive the day before.
The monitor size was not really the issue, just the fact that it was so close it made it feel totally different. Also you had plenty of room to play. PErhaps not as much as you had wanted, but at lest your keyboard was not wobbling and you cold put your arm out.

The other bits of hardware were not an issue cuz the sound cards were X-fi's and the CPU/GPU were just about good enough to run the game at a solidish 63 FPS.

Yes it's a LAN, my whole point was I did not have enough time to get used to it. Partly my fault for not arriving a day early, but mostly due to having to spend time fixing my keyboad instead of playing and getting used to the conditions.
No big deal. Won't happen again.

It's an excuse is it not? and you're right it is your own fault. If you wanted to seriously compete (as it seems you did) you needed a lot more 1v1 practise than you've currently had and more time to get used to the conditions at the event. The thing which bugs me is, you've written an essay basically saying 'i had the same conditions as everyone else but i couldn't adapt to them and my kb broke' next time

1) arrive ealier
2) buy another kb or ask to borrow one.

I had about 6 next to me at my desk just sat doing nothing........

I did not arrive the day before because I felt 2-3 hours was enough time.
However, I did not get that time because of circumstances beyond my control.
I already said I could not use a dif keyboard because mine was customised and too different to get used to in the short amount of time I had left. So far so simple.

Also not everyone had the same conditions. Firstly, many players play with the keyboard close to them, so the lack of room that was a problem to me would not have affected them. For peeps like me who play with their whole arm rested on the desk it was. It's like telling a russain player they are not allowed to play with the board on their lap. It's not a problem so long as they had the time to adapt.
Secondly players like yourself had more room than others because no one was sitting to your left, so you could at least place the keyboard where you wanted it.

I could not buy anothe board like the one I had. Keyboards are a pretty important instrument and not something you really want to swap for hours before a big tourney.

So i'm not whining that there was not x amount of room. My point is I did not get the time to get used to it because of unfortunate circumstances.
Anyway it's over now.

Well when people are asking me to explain why I sucked then I'm simply giving the reasons that I believed contributed to it.

I did crap because of my keyboard and I did not have enough time to get used to the LAN conditions. It's that simple. Otherwise why bother allocating players warmup time in the first place. Anyone know's how important it is to warmup and get used to it.

IF my keyboard had not broken then I would have had sufficient time to get used o the LAN, and I would not have even mentioned the points.

Look on the front page. CPL are now using TFT's. O if someone like Cooler goes to a CPL and has been training with crt then does badly because he had to play on a tft and was not used to it is he a whiner?

No he'ssimply listing genuine reasons which affected his play.
Real excuses which justify your levlel ofscritiny would be stuff like, I did not get enough sleep the night before.
I can't help the fact that my board broke down and my warmup time was lost trying to fix it. no excuse. Just the facts.

But low and behold it's different when I do so.
I already said I sucked because my keyboard was dodgy and I did not have enough time to get comfortable with the setup and the difference the LAN conditions made to the game.

Yeh it was just in my head that my keyboard was fucked and half the time I could not strafe left. (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/luke1995/jamerio/kboard.mov) Or when it stuck and I got dragged into the Lava.
Or when I had to increase the FOV to 120 from 110 cuz I was getting a headache because the monitor was too close, or when my keyboard was wobbling because it was resting on Zac's moue mat. Or that I had 30 mins to warmup.

It's not up for discussion. People asked me to write what happened and that's what happend. I know that some things are psychological, stuff like crosshairs and so forth. I can assure you the things I mentioned were real things which all added up to things that made me suck.
On top of that I was totally inexperienced with LAN conditions and due to trying to fix my keyboard I simply wasted my warmup time trying to fix it.
I know there's a few people on this who's lives blow and make themselves feel better by trying to be continously negative, but things will get better for you in time.

BTW, Fox and tox can beat most people blind folded and have a ton of experience at attending tourneys.
They could look good playing on a gameboy.

i'm talking about not getting a new keyboard mate, and the headache stuff is because the game is crap lol. i've tried most sets of keyboards and mice and i say to myself that i like them, but then i get "bored" and change, but after changing a few times i realize that it doesnt matter and i stay with the same. hardware DOES NOT MATTER if it works, it's all in our heads. i've read that you were able to borrow keyboards but instead you were bullheaded and thought that you wouldnt do good at all with a regular keyboard which is kinda smart in your POV since you can whine about not doing good now -_-. anyways my english isnt that good so you will probably get my point wrong, as most discussions do here at esr, TT.

I was offered a dif keyboard, but mine was so different to the ones on offer it was useless. Though Zacabus's would have been perfect :)
Plus I believed I could fix the keyboard at the time.
Go and ask Hell and Dozo about my board because they were laughing at it on the way down to the event. It really was that customised so I could use the arrows and also reach other weapon keys. Including some keys being glued on top of the other to make it easier for me to reach. Total rapage.
I know you've all seen what I did to my mouse to get it lighter so I know you'll take my word for it:)

So again, nothing to do with being bull headed or ignorant.
If F1 teams bring second cars to te event in case of failure I think I can be forgiven for having a failed keyboard. Shit happens.

I thought I could fix the board, which is why I did not switch.
I use arrows which means I have trouble reaching weapon binds. The only way I could use arrows and still be remotly capable at Quake was to make sure I use a mouse with enough buttons on it so that I can bind weapons to it.
So in your desperate attempt to somehow tell me it's in my head you sir are wrong.I use the equipment I do for a certain reason. I don' even like the mouse I use, but I use it PURELY because it has extra buttons and the 500hs USB thing seems nice too. I suppose that's in my head too? Try using arrows for movement and see what buttons are available for weapon binds which allow you to keep movement/strafe etc. Not many.
Using arrows is not the best solution for FPS games, but I cannot get used to a different setup so that's why I cannot be as flexible and do simple things like jump onto a dif keyboard or use some random mouse.
I have tried and tried but it just don't work out. Deus also uses arrows and does ok. I would imagine he has a similiar issue with weapon binds.
Unless he has NEXT/PREV weapon on a wheel.

Dude.....it's LAN. You're NEVER going to get a LAN setup that will feel exactly like home, so don't even bother hoping or trying to get it. I had my keyboard at ESRI hanging half off the edge of the desk, with about 1/3 of the arm room i'd normally have. I had about 1/2 the mouse space I normally have at home meaning, with my low sens, i couldn't even do a 180 with the space I had. Like you, I only plugged in and got set up with less than 30 minutes till we played our first matches. There were others in very similar positions. It's all in your head. Don't let it get to you and it won't get to your game - that's probably one of the most important things that i've learned about playing on LAN in the past year. Obviously the whole keyboard thing is a slightly different matter, but i'm talking about all the other "excuses".

The reason why I commented to you was because I wondered why so many of the ESRI players have come here to 'correct' Jamerio and tell him none of it is a problem/they all had to too (Or some varient). No it broke about 12 months ago, but when I superglued it had been fine ever since. By dodgy I meant it was one it's last life, but I thought so long as I dont drop it then it would be fine.
Sadly it got damaged in transit/rucksack because it was not as stong as durable as it should have been. MMuch like someone who breaks a leg. It's never as strong as when it was functioning properly.

I had actually bought one as close to the original as possible as I wanted to replace it months ago.

believe me I would not buy two almost identical Packard Bell Keyboards for no reason:/

Really really long post, but i agree on the "not enough space" stuff (i thought it only happened here, not on first world sponsored tourneys). I play with a light (40longx60wide cm) table over my legs where i have the pad glued at right bottom position and left up i put the keyboard. I take it wherever i play, we are one and we cant play without each other. Playing comfortable is key to success.

(The keyboard / "3 hours is enough for me" thing is your problem, and ONLY yours)

Yeh I remember that game and was not what I was referring too.

It was on a 4kings server and I was also aliasing.
The PW began with R and when I got back to IRC someone told me it was you. I'll not name names, but I'm pretty confident it was you because this guy only wanted to play Phrantic and I know how you like the map and it's your best.
I may have been wrong but I don't think so because his level of play seemed almost identical to yours and you're in 4 kings.

People who alias on our server get booted unless your playing a 4k member, either way get a new keyboard and we can play a map till the cows come home. Moo.

Ofc they do. Many were there a day or so before and at the very least had a few hours in the morning. How can you possibly say that's not enough time?

I don't know about the CPL events. I was just saying for someone as fussy about the setup as I am I really needed a bit more than 30 mins warmup as I was still struggling to get comfortable.

I'm also not bothered what people on this or any site think, so long as there is my version to read vs theirs then I really don't care. I have no intention of playing in a clan, or being a pro-gamer. Too many people with problems/chip on their shoulders/head in the gaming world for me to care enough about offending some angry/socially deprived teenager who needs therapy, which is often what it's made up of.
I havea few people I get on with and that's fine with me. I like being an aquired taste an I treat peeps how they treat me. I'm a simple guy.
If I see some dork at a lan who gives me the evil eye cuz something on a forum he did not like then those are not the sort of people I get on with anyway. So it's cool.

Jamerio, you should take it as a lesson learned mate. Go home and play with the same setup you had at esri, that way next time you go to a lan with a limited amount of space.. you will feel right at home. I mean, If the monitors at esri were 50% closer than you have at home.. You have way too much desk space anyway :)

Yeh I do play a long way back compared to a lot of people, but tbh I only play a full arms length (5'10) away from the screen. More for eye strain than anything else.
The setup was fine, I just did not have the time to adapt to it becaue I had to sort other stuff out. Better luck next time:)

The real reason was not enough practise and experiance. From tourny experiance I learnt to simplify all my settings so they are flexible. I wouldn't know why having the monitor closer or bigger would make any difference, in fact in my experiance my aim improved playing on bigger monitors. You're thinking too much of this and you're putting the blame on other things, when it is generally just, practise and experiance.

Yeh I admit it was due to inexpeirne at LAN but the settings were also an issue.
Have you ever jumped into someone elses car and thought "WTF are these seat settings?"
Too close to the windscreen, to near too far etc?
That's exactly the same problem I had. Except I could not do anything about it. They affected me a lot.

If I reach out now, I am still 12 inches short of touching my monitor at home.
At the LAN if I had done that then I would been halfway through the screen.
As a result my whole perception of the game felt different and I simply had no time to re-callibrate. I had counted on 3 hours. I had about 30 minutes. At one point I could not even do basic 180 flick shots and hit a rocket where I wanted to. That had nothing to do with lan experience. It was a setup thing.

I'm pretty sure if professional gaming contrinues then I have no doubt some sort of standard will be set. Some sort of rules that ensure consistency. That's a way down the line though:)

Well there are standards that are mostly used, like 17" monitors. But come on, there is no way you could of thought you would have the same amount of space at the lan? A tip I could give you though is what pele used to do, you shrink the screen size :) (although I have not looked into whether this is possible or not, but it should be. Then you could just shrink the size of the screen until it was the same perspective of that at home.

The worst experiance I had at a tourny that I had to travel to the other side of the country for, my pc broke (it was byoc), my mouse broke, I didn't sleep because my "host" didn't go home and I didn't have a bed and it was -1 (no central heating) I got food poisoning and finally my mouse broke. My god that was crap.

I know which I would choose and the combination of an aggressive player who has given up is bound to give heavy lop-sided results. If you had listened to the cast the non Lost Fleet maps all started off sort of close then Jay/Vorv ran away with the frags during the second half.

Not really, played a lot of tournaments at arcades, but that was a long time ago.
At the next online eurocup you play imagine your strafe key works 50% of the time. Then imagine the impact of that on your movement and confidence in battle. Then the pissy anger at it sticking and being dragged into the lava on Phratic while being stacked.
Play 50% closer to the screen than normal. Place half your keyboard on a mouse mat so that when you do press (like a few times every second) it will wobbly slightly and before you do this imagine how you would do with 30 mins to get used to this.
Then add lost fleet into the equation and the result is 21st century torture :)
Subway sandwiches got me through that day.

stop using the arrow keys and start using wasd, esdf, rdfg etc etc, then it doesnt matter what keyboard you use. Keyboards are one of the least important aspects of gaming, it shouldnt matter what keyboard u have to play on really.

Also LAN != playing on net at home, even if u had the perfect setup at the lan u would have got toasted, lan is diff ballgame to net, it'll take a while to get used to.

I wondering what or whom this excuse is for? People don't give a damn if you've lost, because it was clearly known from the day, your name was on the invite list. The real good thing however is, that you lost so hard and we might finally get some less narcissim from you and how you rock.

You might had a broken setup, but honestly, would you do any better with a working one? I don't think so. You were outplayed.

everyone sucks at their first lan - yes, but if you're gonna play at another lan with the same opponents you'll suck again and again. You don't have the thing to beat them, neither do I. You can't even adopt to different setups/places/table hights/chairs... well guess what everyone goes through the same shit at a lan, either you got what it takes or not.

Just play pubs and have fun.

Nah got nothing to do with what it takes. I just had no time to adjust and because this was my first lan it was a big thing.
Secondly I never bragged about my skills. I just said before the game came out if I trained hard then I believed I could make top 16 at CPL with a bit of luck. As I assumed q4 would be amazing and I would want to play it 24/7. The truth is before the tourney I played like 10 games in about 2 weeks.
I'm just lacking motivation because q4 is basically a poor game only played by people chasing the CPL tourneys.

At the end of the day I have plenty of demos recorded of me playing some good players and winning or losing by a handful of frags. I lost by a shit load becasue I DID NOT Care. I was pissed off. Jay getting 50+ frags on me. Go watch my demo. Half the time I was just running into him trying to get used to the shaft etc. I adopted zero strat.
If you take the scores as an indication of the difference in skill then that's your bad judgement.
Try playing against some of europes top players with a non working strafe key. It screws your movement. Messes up your dodging and just deflates your motivation to play.
At the end of the day my I used my gaming skills to get a job/career which has since netted me over 1/4 million £ in gaming royalties alone and the opportunity to work on some big games.
Imo that's my idea of a pro-gamer:)

If you think its unreasonable that 6 months later one of the keys snapped off in transit on a 4 hour journey in the back of a rucksack and due to the obvious custom nature of the board I was unable to use a different one then its up to you :).

Try finding this keyboard anywhere in the world which is why I could not get a replacement or use a different one.

A video was also posted from the event of the board not working, so, broken keyboard, plus no warmup, plus first lan tourney when I could remotely play, plus first opponent = overall winner = fail :)

Since then I decided to redeem myself. I pushed the2009 world champ Super Turbo player to his limits.
