Name: bogOtac
Notable Work(s): bogOtac II, bogOtac

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your background, interests, etc.?
Hi I'm bogOtac, 23 years old Quake Live no lifer from Serbia. I'm a photographer currently trying to get into programming, although my biggest interest is music. I've been playing guitar for more than ten years and I spend most of my free time listening to music and trying to find at least one new good album that I've never heard before every day. Some of my other hobbies are Kendo, shitposting on ESR, and trying to be annoying in Twitch chat. I used to play only Warcraft III and CS 1.6 until I discovered Quake Live and I've been playing it to this day while waiting for Diabotical.

Are you self-taught or have you taken formal classes on editing?
Never taken any video editing classes which is probably obvious after watching my movies.

What software do you use?
I'm using a free version of Lightworks software and of course Wolfcam.

When starting a project, what is your approach like? Do you have a specific workflow?
I don't really think about it. It's usually just playing the game, recording demos, and if the frags are good I'll play around with them in Wolfcam when I'm bored and adding music without much concern if it's synchronized with frags or not. I usually do it when I'm really bored and too lazy to play games or do anything else and since my movies are so simple with minimum editing. Sometimes it takes an hour or two to make a movie and sometimes it takes months because I'm too lazy to work on it.

What has inspired you in your work? Are there specific movies or moviemakers that changed the way you approach your own work?
What inspired me the most to make a fragmovie was my pc getting filled up with QL demos. I couldn't just delete all those amazing games with sick frags so I had to make a movie. I rarely watch frag movies although I really enjoy oldschool ones like 'Quake 3 fragged by evil' or 'manJu' and amazing videos by ulbe and ika.

What is it about the "Fragged by Evil" and "ManJu" movies that you like? Is there a specific element of those movies that makes them special?
Fragged by evil had hilarious soundtrack and ugly q3 config it was 100% about frags. Manju was more epic movie. I especially liked the 3rd person cam that shows good dodging.

So I guess you enjoyed those for different reasons.
Yes, but both of them had agreat frags on pro players which is the most important thing about them.

Ulbe and Ika are known for their weird/strange editing and humor. Ulbe's movies are very trippy, too. I don't know any movies quite like his... Do you think that's something moviemakers should try to do? Find their own style?
Yes, absolutely. Especially if they are trying to make funny movies, they need to have unique sense of humor like ika or ulbe. Best thing about ika's videos is reading comments from people who think he's being serious.

:) Feedback for movies is always enjoyable. Especially on ESR. You never know how the site will react. Well... mostly.
Thats what makes it worth posting your movie on ESR. I probably wouldn't post movies on ESR if I expected a bunch of "Good work, keep it up" comments.

Which of your own projects are you most proud of? Which do you think were most instrumental in your development as a moviemaker?
I'm not very proud of any of my movies. I am aware that they could be so much better if i wasn't so lazy but I'm glad that some people liked them and some people got very angry because of them. Also, it's amazing how it turned into a meme and people started uploading their BOGOTAC fragmovies. I guess I'm kind of proud of that. It made me laugh a lot for sure. If I had to pick one, I guess my first movie is my favorite because of the Strenx clip at the end of the movie. What an absolute legend he is!

There is a range of game movies in terms of editing styles and structure. Some you could call some "old school" (minimal editing) and then there are very elaborate projects with significant amounts of editing. Where do you think your movies fall? In your opinion, is there an ideal balance between editing and content?
I guess you could say that my movies fall into the "oldschool" category since they are 100% about frags and I don't really care about editing.

We talked about how unique Ulbe's and Ika's movies are. And also how you liked ManJu's 3rd person cameras. I was wondering if there are other movies that you've seen that impressed you with the creativity? I'm thinking primarily about the presentation or editing.
I really liked some of the editing on Quake is Potat's (aka "Melechesh") last movie. The compositon on some of the 3rd person views was very good although overall I didn't enjoy the movie that much since I don't remember a single frag from it.

So it really is all about the frags for you!
Yes! I am quake player first of all so I really want to see the frags. Good editing and music is always a plus but without great frags the movie becomes kinda pointless. The worst thing that can happen is ruining the great frags with too much editing and slow motion. Especially if it's an Arena FPS game where you want to show the viewers the fast pace of the game.

What do you think the future holds for game movies? Are there new styles/techniques possible?
There is definitely a bright future for skilled movie makers since gaming and esports are getting more and more main stream. Some of them are already making a living from making movies and similar content of popular games. There are always styles and techniques still waiting to be explored although it's rare to see these days in Arena FPS community someone with original style.

What advice do you have for new moviemakers?
I think Arena FPS community lacks new content creators so new movie makers are welcome. I dont feel like I should be giving any advice about making movies since I'm terrible at it but just don't be afraid of negative comments and low ratings. If you are new to making movies like myself maybe try to keep it simple and oldschool and don't try to copy others. Also, never go full Lotzy!
