Not so much of an announcement or a recent release, but more of a reminder that there is actually a lively community playing the game that invented Overwatch. It is, of course, Team Fortress mod from the oldest instalment of Quake, now available as a standalone game that requires you do nothing but slap the download link.

Most notable features of the modernised game client are multi platform support (Win, Linux) and support for potat pcs that is bound to make our friends behind the modern day Iron Curtain happy (they even got #russia on discord!). Other than that, it's all down to the community which is hosting 2v2 & 4v4 TF leagues, ladders and overall keeps the game alive either through constant development or daily pickup games.

If you're interested in pugging, first step would be to hop on to the website and grab the client and optional files. Next up, sign in to the website via discord and grab your token. Run the game client and paste the line in to console. Congrats, you're ready to play! Hop on to the discord server and sign yourself up for a few games. And in true quaker fashion, don't watch the tutorials on how to play (because you're the best player!) and simply annoy the rest of your team mates for the day.

Foul play behind GT Quake Live Duel Cups (5 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 08:40 CDT, 7 July 2019 - iMsg
As the state of the game dwindles and the player base decreases, it seems that the money cows and power hungry admins have ditched all ethics regarding fair competition. With the recent Russia base drama, where admins said that proven players can cheat*, behind us everyone thought and hoped that it will be the last of such kind in our scene. Unfortunately, a new scandal is unraveling behind the scenes of GT Quake Live Duel Cups. Current situation shows that professional players and community favourites have gained privileges compared to their competitors.

Let Them Eat Quake Awards 2019 (242 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 12:41 CST, 27 January 2019 - iMsg
Welcome to the first edition of Let Them Eat Quake awards. The awards have been established in order to honor the people who entertained us casual folk the most over the span of last year with their undying fakethusiasm and never ending shilling for Quake Champions. Some of them got paid to do it, others just did it out of their love for everything Quake related (i.e. zealots).

The nominees:

And this is the beautiful trophy our competitors will be fighting for. Credits for designing this beauty go entirely to Calderone.

Check out the brackets and vote for semifinal 1 and semifinal 2. Semifinal voting closes on Thursday, January 31st.

bullshit qc apologists say (439 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 09:57 CST, 18 December 2018 - iMsg
I've witnessed a stream or two filled with qc cultists and shit that's being said there is surreal.

so apparently, qc having 1,3k avg players is not bad because "we're aware that quake won't be a mainstream game, we don't want it to be mainstream, these are good numbers for a quake game".

also when confronted with tech issues qc has the common reply is "oh so you think you can do it better? why don't you get a job there then? why don't you fix it for them?".

and probably my favorite "you crying about qc cause your pussy cant handle being fucked by big black dick".

what's the best you've heard?

let's make a greatest shits list.

Quake Champions of Bug Abuse (39 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 13:24 CST, 1 December 2018 - iMsg
Rapha and DaHang of Team Liquid reign supreme on DreamHack Winter! They've overcome team AMD featuring Cooller and Toxjq with superior teamplay, aim, insanely poor tactics by AMD during last 5 minutes of 2nd map and heavy Eisen turret bug abuse across all the maps.

Even though intentional abuse of bugs is forbidden by DreamHack rules, they blocked the shit out of item and powerup pickups for team AMD each time they could.

In the end, the best team won.

American genes prove to be superior (62 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 07:00 CDT, 12 August 2018 - iMsg
... Again!

Over and over again, the United States of America TeamLiquid duo, rapha and DaHang remind us of how superior the North American gene pool is compared to the one of continent that discovered them, Canada excluded.

In a very uninspiring and uninteresting best of 7, rapha and DaHang dispatched of young Belarus clawz and Sweden Toxjq. As in all Hollywood movies, Americans never fail to deliver when pitted against Soviets (and pretty much all Communists), even ex-ones like Clawz. It's safe to say that Toxjq was just a collateral damage of American patriotism this QuakeCon.

Until next year, stay great America!

a quake tutorial by baSe (87 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 05:42 CST, 7 February 2018 - iMsg
So, recently I was thinking "hey, maybe I dismissed QC too early" since I'm seeing all these people having fun in game, and streaming and what not.

Now for all of you who know me, you know I'm a ctf god and played maybe 50 duels and 100 tdms over my 8-9 years of playing quake. So when you take that in to account, on the first look qc doesn't have much to offer.

but then, I watched some duels, and couldn't stop watching. there's a lot of good players I watched, clawz, xron, spart1e, rapha, dahang, etc, but one guy stood out. it's Russia baSe. I've always known him as a great player (winning 125fps etc), a legit player ( never no controversies ) and a guy with a great sense of humour (the preparing for 125 fps cup videos).

So I've watched more and more, I've soaked up the knowledge and I felt blown away by this feeling of massive skill that is building up in me. I felt compelled to share this knowledge to the world. Unfortunately, someone compiled some of his gretest and brainest moves way before me, but I haven't seen it posted anywhere yet, so here it is.

Is QC racist? (337 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 15:49 CDT, 14 June 2017 - iMsg
First of all, take a look at the following trailer. Take a good look.

What is wrong you say? There's a girl, there's asians, there's whites... But where are African Americans? First of all, we're all from Africa. Second of all, black lives matter. It is beyond me that id would ignore a whole race like this.

What kind of a message does this send to African American communities? Does id see them only as drug dealers and crack fiends? There's not even a black champion in the game!!!

Afro American community provided us with numerous great players and this is a direct insult to them. Think of Lost_cause, he's probably still in Africa (mostly due to his team not paying for his flight back), imagine how he feels now that he got ignored by the game he dedicated a lot of his life to.

Think of br1ck, the QuakeCon champion. Pretty sure he feels like shit now that id released a video in which a black man is reduced to gangbanging and drive-bys, since apparently they're not capable of wielding a mouse and keyboard instead of Mag-7 and uzi.

Quake Battles QC Sacrifice Draft (17 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 09:23 CDT, 11 June 2017 - iMsg
The Quake Champions pickup, Quake Battles, organised their first draft cup this Sunday.

The mode being played is Sacrifice, the e-sports mode in Quake Champions. It's a smaller sized draft, mostly due to beta still not being persistently online so it could've easily happened for the draft to not finish if it had a bigger size.

There are 4 teams participating and most notable signups are United States of America carnage, Poland syndrom and Estonia SHUGH. The lack of spectator mode means you'll have to be happy with one pov per stream.

Quake Champions Pickup (72 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 14:08 CDT, 1 June 2017 - iMsg
With Quake Champions NDA being lifted for good, I figure this is the right time to announce that a Discord pickup community has been created.

The pickup is featuring both team modes currently in the game, Sacrifice and TDM along with the 1v1 mode, Duel. I can confirm the games were pretty much frequent throughout the closed beta tests and there's players of all skill levels there, from one of the worst to one of the best ones in the game so far.

The pickup is mostly Euro-dominated, but there is also an NA channel available for Murica to have fun in.

So now that you know pretty much everything, only thing left to do is to join the server and start adding. For all other questions you might have, feel free to pm the admins.

After a long hiatus from the Quake scene, the community sweetheart Axel "Draxen" Masson returns to his roots. The french widowmaker was a force to be reckoned with in Overwatch scene, demolishing all competition with his team unKnights and earning $56 in the process. The hype is real and everyone is impatient to see if playing Overwatch left a dent in Draxen's Quake skill. Only 4 more days to go until we find out!

In the meantime, you can check out the trailer where Draxen is seen stomping 1200 elo CA servers without breaking a sweat.

ASL Season 2 Ro8 Day 4 (4 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 08:12 CST, 8 January 2017 - iMsg
The last day of Afreeca Starleague Season 2 Ro8 is ahead of us. The semifinalists so far are sc2_protoss BeSt, sc2_terran sea and sc2_terran Flash. The last couple to decide who's completing the semis is sc2_zerg Jaedong vs sc2_protoss Stork.

What can be said about Stork and Jaedong that hasn't been written at least hundreds of times now? It's a rivalry that started way back, in 2007, during EVER Starleague and kept going till this very day. Jaedong walked the royal road during that starleague and it was Stork who faced him in the finals. Dong took the starleague and Stork started his very own Kong line.

What can we expect ten years later? Both of these guys are playing good Brood War, Stork being surprisingly good while JD's zvP ain't quite there yet. All there's left for us to do is to tune in @ 04:30 CST, 10 January 2017 and hope for good games. Who knows, maybe we'll get to see another Lee-Ssang Rok in the semis.

Update: Stork vs Jaedong vod

KT Giga Legends Match (24 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 14:51 CST, 16 November 2016 - iMsg
It's safe to say that SC2 ain't doing that well in Korea after almost every player in the scene (aside from JAGW ones) got teamless. On the other hand, the game that got killed so SC2 could grow roots (ty Blizzard) is thriving once again.

The headline of the month is "TYRANT IS BACK". With sc2_zerg Jaedong back, the 4 pillars of Starcraft (Flash, Bisu, Jaedong, Stork) are back in the game that made them. With that in mind, it's only appropriate to have a tournament where those player go at each other and that's what this tournament's all about.

Without further ado, the TaekBangLeeSsang tournament is taking place on November 19th @ 04:00 CDT.

Get hyped.

Another weekend and another round of Afreeca Starleague is here. If you're just interested in the result, check the spoiler below.

Second semifinal is sc2_protoss Shuttle vs sc2_terran Last. Last is coming off of last week's trashing of Flash in his best matchup and is expected to repeat the same thing against Shuttle tomorrow. It should be an upset even if Shuttle manages to take more than 1 map off of him. The games are scheduled for Monday, Aug 29th, 12:00 CEST and will be casted by Tasteless and Artosis over at twitch Afreeca twitch channel.

Having had a lengthy summer vacation, I wasn't able to update y'all about 2016 Afreeca Starleague. Time to rectify that then.

Let's start off with quick recap of scores of the RO8 games played so far. sc2_terran sSak faced off against sc2_terran sharp and sc2_terran sea went head to head with sc2_zerg hero. Presuming you haven't watched the games yet, you can watch the vod of both sc2_terran sSak vs sc2_terran sharp and sc2_terran sea vs sc2_zerg hero. Unfortunately, The Casting Archon wasn't casting any of the games (Wolf & RAPiD were the casters). For spoilers check below.

Today's game will be sc2_protoss Eyewater (Shuttle) vs sc2_protoss Jaehoon and it starts at 23:00 CDT. The real treat however is the game on Monday. In what seems to be the hottest game of the season, sc2_terran Flash goes up against sc2_terran Last in a BO5. Their game starts at 05:00 CDT, 22 August 2024.

Normally that'd be it, but seeing how there's El Classico of e-sports going on on the same days as ASL RO8 I just HAVE TO announce that as well. SK Telecom vs KT Rolster is happening today at 11:00 CEST and on Monday @ 12:00 CEST.

Against all odds, Brood War is still standing strong. Matter of fact, it's almost like SC2 never got released (one can dream). Another testimony to longevity of Korean BW is Afreeca Starleague 2016. The qualifiers are over and all of the 16 participating players are known. Starleague starts tomorrow, 05:30 CDT, 17 July 2024 and lasts until September 4th.

The Starleague is loaded with good players, most notable ones being sc2_terran Flash and sc2_zerg EffOrt. Total prizepool is cca ~ USD $21000. All games will be streamed on Afreeca's twitch channel. The English commentary will be provided by Tasteless & Artosis.

Quick 5v5 CTF Draft Cup part 2 (10 comments)

Therefore tonight, in 1 hour, Nov 11, 2015 @ 21:00 CET, the draft continues from WB semis and R3 LB. It's possible that we will need some subs so if you want to play, join #qldrafts and pm esdf.

The mousepad is still in play and by unanymous decision we've decided to award South Africa fny with a 1 month QL pro token for his immeasurable contribution to the last draft which made him an undisputed mvp.

Quick 5v5 CTF Draft Cup (28 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 11:28 CST, 6 November 2015 - iMsg
Holas a todos! Here's a quick announcement for y'all. Tonight, October 6th, 2015 @ 21:00 CET a quick 5x5 ctf draft cup will be held. We've already reached minimum of 4 teams needed to run this cup, so now we'd like to extend invitation for everyone else.

Rules are fairly simple, so simple that they fit in this simple little link: rules. As far as map pool goes, it's still being voted on. If you want to play then make sure you vote for your favorite maps as well. You can vote here.

In case you wondered, yes, there are also prizes. Netherlands Gohann decided to donate a brand new QCK mousepad to the winning team. We still have no idea how the winning team will split the prize, perhaps 20% of cloth to each member? In this sea of ridiculously good prizes there's one that tops them all. The MVP of the cup will win a 1 month Quake Live PRO token!

All you need to do to participate is go to mIRC #qldrafts @ irc.quakenet.org and pm one of the admins with your Steam / QL nick. The sign ups are open until 20:30 CET and picking phase starts the moment sign ups close.

Update: Due to a lot of people PM-ing me on irc, the picking starts at 17:00 CEST and games start as soon as picking is over.

Now that the league has finished it is time yet again for some CTF action. This time around it's a one day cup instead of a month long league.

The signups are already open and you can register yourself for the cup until Sunday, 14th @ 16:00 CEST. It is also mandatory to idle in #qldrafts channel on QuakeNet. Whoever's not there when picking starts (16:00 CEST) will be removed from the cup.

Another important thing to mention is that if there is not at least 32 signups (8 teams) the cup will be canceled.

pimp your firefox (102 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 06:52 CST, 26 February 2015 - iMsg
So, I've recently gone back to linux, this time a Fedora instead of arch.

First thing I've noticed is, of course, youtube not working due to no flash and being forced to use the crappy html5 container in firefox or install chrome if I want to watch videos.

So, for a few days I've used the html5 player and it's horrible. or beyond horrible, can't decide yet..

Long story short, finally set up my firefox more or less how I want to, so here's my config.

The extension I'm using is Open With (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-with/). I'm using this not only for youtube, but for anything with a video running in a flash container. Basically, go about:openwith once you install it and add

/usr/bin/mpv --force-window --ytdl

To make this work you will obviously need mpv and youtube-dl on your system. Set the options to display as menu item on view menu, main context menu and main context menu (links). You can now right-click youtube, twitch, etc links and open them directly in mpv. You can also browse to a twitch channel or youtube page or whatever ytdl supports and just click the mpv icon and it'll load the video.

Now on to embedding mpv instead of flash/html5 container. To do this I needed to install mozplugger and modify it a bit to use mpv instead of mplayer which is the default. think this is the only thing that needs to be changed:

/etc/mozpluggerrc
define(MP_CMD,[mpv -really-quiet --keep-open=yes $1 </dev/null])
define(MP_EMBED,[embed noisy ignore_errors: MP_CMD(--autofit=$width -wid $window $1)])
define(MP_NOEMBED,[noembed noisy ignore_errors maxaspect swallow(mpv): MP_CMD($1)])

Since I was editing mozpluggerrc I stumbled upon openoffice part and made it work with libre:

define([OO],[swallow(VCLSalFrame) fill: libreoffice --nologo --norestore --view $1 "$file"])

Next thing you need to embed your player of choice in firefox is to grab ViewTube (http://isebaro.com/viewtube/?ln=en). Note that you'll need greasemonkey for that. While viewtube is great it unfortunately doesn't support videos embeded on external sites, like ESR for example. That left me a bit disappointed, but I kept looking and seems the same author made the LinkTube extension which replaces all the embeded content on external sites with a link to the video. Unfortunately it makes for an ugly link, so I had to "trim" that script a bit. Here's the trimmed script which only displays the link and no other crap: http://pastie.org/9984555

This is where openwith extension comes in handy again, you can just right-click it and open in mpv and continue to browse with no hassle.

Anyway, hope you find it useful.

Story One

So, I got this problem. My friends always tell me I'm a hipster. At first I was like 'lol u guys funny', but now it's going on for quite some time (read: months) and it's starting to annoy me. Real friends shouldn't say mean things to each other, right? Is it time for me to break off some friendships or should I stick to that old saying, keep your friends close and enemies even closer? I normally wouldn't care about these "trolls", but I recently lost a lot of weight and even though I got a confidence boost, I still don't feel comfortable (comparison pic).

What's worse, people that pass me by on the street sometimes give me that disgusted look so now I'm starting to feel insecure. Maybe it really is my clothes and looks? Anyway, I will provide some pictures so you can form a good opinion and tell me what you really think.

Here's what I think. I like to dress nice, I like to take care of my looks, does that really make me a hipster? Do people that mock me deserve to be called my friends? Should I give them another chance and pass off their trolling for what it is or break off all contact?

As promised, below are some pics so you can make a good comment.

ctf draft league (11 comments)

so basically, already ran an intern poll and results were more than positive. still, i'd like this to be a public thing for a change so i'm interested in what the rest of you have to say.

question at hands is, would you play a ctf draft league? i'd do the biweekly schedules to avoid it lasting over a month and at the start/middle of march when my uni classes end. anyway, cast your votes here please: http://strawpoll.me/3619002

and yeah, i kind of gave up on the idea of duel draft league since duel's still the only active thing in ql in terms of events + the last 2 ctf drafts were successful so why not try.

edit: oh yeah, whoever voted in that #p-s poll, please don't vote here again since your votes are noted already. and please DON'T vote yes if you have no intention of actually playing.

UPDATE: so combining results with this poll, http://strawpoll.me/3545232/r the total amount of yes votes is 62. Let's say ~20 people voted on both polls, that's still leaves us with over 40 (8 teams with 5 players each). In the next few days I'll announce everything regarding signups, etc.

twitch buys eg (8 comments)

This isn’t going to be one of those post-acquisition blogs in which the fact that there’s money involved in the transaction is conveniently glossed over. There’s no doubt that being bought by Twitch means all of our employees will be taken care of very well. But at the same time, we’re talking about a group of people who’ve dedicated most - if not all - of their adult lives to esports and to growing this industry. It’s a deserving bunch. On top of that, we’ve reserved a portion of the transaction for a player pool, which means that every player currently contracted with GoodGame will receive a small portion of the company’s sale. And as an Amazon subsidiary, we’ll also be able to offer our players other additional benefits to which they didn’t previously have access.

TL;DR - it’s a good deal for everyone involved. And while I’d be lying to you guys if I said that the level of support didn’t factor into my decision, I’d be lying just as much if I told you that the support alone would’ve been enough. Don’t get me wrong, the financial security doesn’t hurt. But I didn’t put ten years of my life into this company - and this industry - only to sell my soul in public for a couple of bucks.

No word-mincing. No bullshit. That’s not what this is.

duel league in a proleague format (18 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 14:55 CDT, 5 October 2014 - iMsg
I've been thinking of making a duel league next year with a proleague format. That would basically mean teams of duelers with each player playing 1 map per bo5 match. Maps would be fixed for each play week. In case of tiebreaker map, a player that already played could play again.

That's the general idea. I need some feedback/opinions on this format, suggestions and similar stuff. Duel scene is pretty big and active (compared to other QL scenes) so it could work in theory.

drop powerup and /kill in ctf (39 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 10:59 CST, 25 February 2014 - iMsg
First of all, I don't agree with /kill bringing anything to the table regarding balance as some players would want you to think regardless of the mode being played 5v5 or 4v4.

Why I do think /kill is a necessity in ctf is due to powerup dropping being simply a bad option. Let me explain this on two most popular in ctf: japan & spider crossings. On japan it's a common thing for defs to hog the quad and extend it's duration by almost half the original one due to drop powerup availability. That simply kills the game flow when you have a quad def you need to attack against. As far as p9 goes there's a different issue. Teams often delay their home pu more than necessary due to negligence but suffer no penalty because once again you can drop the powerup and have it dropped for as long as 10s before it disappears which allows them to make up for their bad play in just two drops.

Those are the two biggest issues I have with drop powerup, but certainly not the only ones.

My suggestion is the following: disable drop powerups in competitive ctf and instead force kill as a default. It would be nice if an admin made a poll out of this so everyone can vote.

No, it's not SK Planet Proleague just adding an event, it's the first ever Brood War Proleague finals after the switch back in 2012, starting today at 07:00 CDT. Sponsored by SBENU and Sonic, the Proleague features all of your favorite teams, from Jaedong Hwaseung Oz to MBC Game. Keep in mind that this is just a form of pre-season and that the actual SBEN Proleague season has yet to start.

I'm pretty sure that you're wondering why do the teams have old names? Well, Sonic made sure that old teammates are gathered under same banner as they have been during Brood War. Unfortunately, the sponsors haven't returned along with the players, so that means KT, STX, etc are not actually sponsoring the teams. The two teams that have qualified to finals are MBC Game and STX Soul and are both filled with good players, so tune in and enjoy the games!

QL project: SUCK LESS (33 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 08:08 CST, 19 December 2013 - iMsg
I've finally decided to post about a project of mine. Took me only death of teamleagues for quake live and being unable to play QL anymore to do it. You can check out the preview on esdf.in/suck-less.

What is "Suck Less"?
It's a design for a league site worked on by myself (layout, css and overall idea) and Poland super_koziol (gfx). The idea is to have a tournament system that sucks less than (now dead) clan base, hoq, wga, etc. From the feedback I've got so far, the site's design is quite good, it's not a total clusterfuck and you don't need a map & a compass to get around it.

Features so far:
* First thing you'll notice is that the site doesn't have any news items and similar shit attached to it. There's 3 columns per row which represent the currently announced / ongoing tournaments and offer you only thing you need from a tournament site: to participate or watch. News should be on sites dedicated to news, e.g. ESR.

* Registration will be as painless as possible, requiring only username & password. I'm thinking of adding email verification just for the sake of preventing spam.

* You can also check out the dashboard, which is clean, simple & intuitive. I've included only profile settings I think that matter - username, nickname, password & contact.

* If you're a clan/team owner you'll get to edit all the stuff that's in there, if not you can just preview. If you want to make a team, only thing you need to input is team name, contact & password. Once the team is created you got a few more options to customize it, but nothing extra.

* The team overview section will also show what leagues your team is currently competing in, your upcoming clanwars, new challenges and results awaiting your confirmation. Oh yeah, the roster is there as well with simple options to kick someone out. Once someone enters your team password, he's automatically in - no need to confirm stuff by clan owner.

* The cup/league info page shows some general cup info, rules, participants, brackets & results. Speaking of brackets, they're missing, I'm struggling hard to design something nice when it comes to brackets and will probably use some default embed crap (unless I get an epiphany). The page is also missing a signup button for now. That's about it, all relevant info on one place.

* Team profile page includes contact info, roster overview and achievements. It's currently missing a join form, but will get added.

* All the pages mentioned here are linked somewhere on the site. Since it's not properly linked yet and I don't think that you should crawl through the tabs just to find 1 link, here they are: main page, cup info, login, team profile, dashboard.

What needs to be done:
* Design of the admin panel, footer, personal profile page and add missing details to existing pages

* Actual code to make the site work. So far I've talked to Poland PYTON and he said he could do it, but it'd take him time since he doesn't have time to work just on this, so if any of you want to contribute feel free to reply here, pm me here or join #suckless on irc. Skillset needed: php/mysql/jquery.

* My knowledge in those areas is lacking and with id killing off linux support my interest for QL and related stuff got totally deflated. That being said, I will finish the design on this mainly because I don't want to see all the progress so far go to waste. And I do hope there's guys out there willing to help out with actual code so we make the best tournament site out there.

NOTE!!! The site is not functional, this is only a design overview and how things are intended to work. No actual code has been written yet and this thread is more of a feedback thread. If you have any ideas on what to add, improve, remove, etc please reply here so we can take it in consideration before it's too late (i.e. before the work on actual code starts).

#CTFPICKUP Sunday Special (41 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 06:16 CDT, 20 October 2013 - iMsg
The mIRC #ctfpickup team is inviting everybody for the today's special CTF day. Each game today is played in 5on5 format.

This has different reasons. First of all we'd like to see whether 5on5 is working for Quake Live or not. CTF has always been played 5on5 back in Quake 3 and we'd like to look back on that. Another reason is, that we'd like to bring a bit more variety to CTF. We may have a few more special events for the upcoming Sundays.

We hope you'll enjoy the games and have fun grabbing the flag.

so while browsing esr i'm noticing that there's actually nothing to read or do on site, unless it's flaming on zhu threads.

it'd be nice if some people stepped up and did some regular coverage of at least one of the duel tournaments that we have going on, and maybe make some sort of power rank on the duelers (like team liquid have), etc...

just a suggestion for people willing to do stuff, i'm not one of them. i prefer to just complain and whine.

edit: i meant for power ranks to be written by people who watch duels and actually know about duelers.. i don't know shit aside from that there's evil & 2-3 more names :D specially bout how they fare on each map etc...

and as tournament coverage, just someone to recap how the action went throughout the tournament, similar like how there used to be an occasional lan coverage.

Why FACEIT CTF draft turned shit? (13 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 11:59 CDT, 6 July 2013 - iMsg
Let's start off with the most obvious. It's called a DRAFT, but it isn't one. One would think that taking part in draft means playing with a random team against other random teams similar in skill level. On the other hand this draft lets you register and play in a premade team which is no different then other cups & leagues. What is wrong with that is the fact that you can stack your team and defeat the whole purpose of the draft. Next point I'd like to make that this particular cup had skill limitation imposed on participants, basically - you had to be a shit/average player to take part. The initial level requirement was level 6 PER PLAYER, then 1-2 days before the cup it was changed to level 6 PER TEAM AVERAGE. This opened the door to 2-3 top players picking up 1-2 baddies just to drop their team level average. While talking about levels, it's important to say that level requirement to play in a CTF tournament is based off of duel & clan arena stats/match history. Pretty brilliant system, isn't it? :)

So, what happened? A couple of stacked teams signed up just because they had 1 bad player in their team that dropped the average level to 6 and plowed through the teams this cup was made for. When actual draft or low skilled teams played each other, it kind of produced fun games (score-wise, e.g. z1s vs CZA). I wouldn't want to blame it too much on the players tho, they obeyed all the cup rules and it's pretty obvious who is the real reason why this draft got fucked up.

How to make it better? First of all, if your website is not ready to host a tournament for a certain game mode, then don't host it. Learned that on ESA (that had real tech issues tho). Trying to skill restrict a CTF cup based on DUEL/CA stats, that's just a sad and halfassed effort. When you announce a DRAFT cup then make it draft, not a regular cup. I'm aware that making it a real draft might have required admins to do some actual job, like seeding the players and manually making the teams, but it had to be done. If nothing else, you could've asked some of the ops on #ctfpickup and I'm pretty sure they'd help you out. No excuses for being lazy just cause the site can't do it for you at the moment. Also, the rules. Once you make the rules - stick with 'em. It was supposed to be a lowskilled CTF draft and level 6 PER PLAYER fit in to that whereas level 6 PER TEAM AVERAGE totally broke it. Last and not the least - the casters. While ins and ddk work good together on duel/tdm, they're horrid on ctf and have no clue on how to cover the game mode. I've no idea why one of them wasn't paired up by zoot, at least the guy casted a ton of ctf before and still plays ctf. Ddk and ins are not ctf players, and don't even casually play it (aside from 2-3 pickups a month by ins). Can't expect them to contribute anything relevant to the tournament.

That's about it for my rant.

Posted by esdf @ 12:53 CDT, 28 June 2013 - iMsg
In the recent wake of events (i.e. Dota2 cup), where the site literally broke down under the load and with some bugs preventing people to actually sign up or check in for the cup, we at ESA have decided to postpone the cup.

The new date will be announced as soon as the site is fixed and bug free (at least from all the bugs that ruined the Dota2 tournament). Please stay tuned for the new date, everything will be announced here and on ESAGamer.

Sincere apologies on behalf of whole ESA team.

ESA TDM Open Cup #1 (60 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 17:07 CDT, 11 June 2013 - iMsg
Last time you heard from us, we announced the site going live. This time around we're happy to announce the TDM Open Cup #1 which is filled with prizes. Top 16 teams all get a part of the £1250 prize pool and thanks to our newest sponsors, Ozone Gaming, the best team gets awesome Ozone Blade keyboards as well.

The cup kicks off at 09:00 CDT on June 30th and features a double elimination bracket. The sign-ups are already open so feel free to start registering for the tournament. The check-in begins 1 hour before the tournament start. You can get all the information about the tournament (rules, schedule...) on the tournament page. Stream information will be added during the next few days. Also, please hop by our mIRC irc channel if you have any additional questions.

Last, but not the least, seeing how there was a lot of misunderstanding on what "free" means when it comes to ESA tournaments and how subscriptions are going to work, please check out the extensive interview that HolySh1t guys did with Didge (ESA director). You will find all the answers to your questions there.

ESA Welcomes Quakers (51 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 12:14 CDT, 6 June 2013 - iMsg
ELECTRONIC SPORTS ASSOCIATION (ESA) is starting it's operations today. To make things more interesting, one of the games it will feature is Quake Live.

EDIT: Due to accidentally having published the tournament before everything was sorted out (including map pool, schedules, etc), I'd just like to confirm that the game mode will be TDM. A more detailed post on the first tournament will greet you on Monday/Tuesday here on ESR, along with possibility to sign your teams up for it, etc. Sorry for the confusion!

Why Quake? Well, seeing how our dearest Q is the granddaddy of e-sports it just wouldn't be fair to leave it out. You'll get the chance to compete for points, cash and prestige in ESA's tournaments and to participate you only need to sign up on ESA's homepage.

During next week there will be extensive information about our first cup posted here, so watch out! It's time to start signing up because the cups start as early as July and you don't want to be doing everything on the last day now, do you? :P

Check out the links below for more info on what ESA is about and more details on it's tournaments. Also, you're welcome to idle/perform in mIRC #esa @ quakenet.

Site - vids, vods, guide (7 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 18:41 CDT, 19 May 2013 - iMsg
This started just as a page I could host my ctf guide on and ended being some sort of a hub for ql related stuff.

So, the relevant stuff:

url: http://ql.esdf.in/ and http://www.youtube.com/user/supesdf
content: ctf guide, frag movies, tournament vods, demos, configs, huds

the ctf guide is not really finished, latest update being may 10th, but it's 3/4 done, so I'm comfortable with posting here. The front page will get a redesign some time this year, depends when I get the time.

guide is basically all me until may 10th version, when it got heavily populated with raist's contributions (so I've just put the guy as co-author). i suggest you download the pdf or html, as the on-site version got quite bulky (wall-of-text bulky). might give that l2p page a redesign as well.

as far as fragvids go, uploaded a ton, mostly didn't check with authors if it's ok, so if for some reason you find your video being mirrored by me on site and youtube and don't like it, query on irc or leave a comment here, i'll remove it.

in the end, thanks to everyone who uploaded their demos, configs, etc. if there's more people interested in contributing in such a way, leave a comment here or query on irc.

edit: in case you missed it on site, here's a wallpaper contrib to quakelive scene by ahxnxa (nsfw).

EpicRewind (No comments)
Posted by esdf @ 09:52 CDT, 18 May 2013 - iMsg
http://www.reddit.com/r/esports/comments/1dle...ch_uses_a/

What is EpicRewind?

EpicRewind is PC software which provides "instant-replay" or DVR like video capture functionality to PC games. When running, your gameplay video is continuously buffered in fast System RAM, the contents of this buffer can be saved to a file with the press of a hotkey. Instead of pre-planning a gaming video you can selectively save the highlight moments after they happen. Ideal for MMOs and Multiplayer games where 99% of the gameplay isn't worth sharing and the interesting stuff can happen at unexpected times.
Awesome Performance

EpicRewind is different than other capture software you might be familiar with, video isn't being encoded and written to disk continuously. Instead, EpicRewind simply copies raw video frames into a rolling buffer in system RAM, writing to disk and encoding is deferred until you choose to save a video. This keeps your average system load to an absolute minimum and helps minimize the impact on your gameplay experience.

also, on linux version

Greetings! We would like to do Mac OSX and Linux ports eventually but first we are focusing on making the Windows version really solid/awesome. Would love to get that done eventually though

seems like a nice tool.

The topics also covered were the upcoming online ZOWIE sponsored tournament that is going to be hosted by Excello and of course, the inevitable ranking of the countries according to Quake skill and retardation level.

Tving Ongamenet Starleague Finals (56 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 16:08 CDT, 3 August 2012 - iMsg
Scheduled: 04:00 CDT, 4 August 2012 to 07:30 CDT, 4 August 2012
Schedule: Passed

This is it. The end of over a decade long professional eSports in Korea as we know it. With first OGN Starcraft 2 Starleague right behind the corner, we are left with one last look at professional Brood War at it's best.

This year's finals is a reprisal of last year's in which sc2_protossJangBi completed Legend of the Fall against sc2_terranFantasy to seal his first ever OSL title which left sc2_terranFantasy in the Kong Line.

Starting tomorrow from 04:00 CDT we will find out if sc2_protossJangBi becomes only protoss alongside sc2_protossGarimto to win two OSL titles and repeats a feat only matched by sc2_terranBoxeR and sc2_zergJaedong - to win a back-to-back OSL title. Also, this is the last chance for sc2_terranFantasy to break his Kong curse and become immortalized as the last Brood War OSL champion ever.

Update: sc2_protossJangBi takes home the last Brood War OSL ever in what proved to be a complete rape of sc2_terranFantasy! Well done \o/ GG NO RE. Fantasy remains King of Kong.

OSL KeSPA GROUPS ANNOUNCED (18 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 10:33 CDT, 25 July 2012 - iMsg
With all the OSL prelims over, and GSL groups already announced, the KeSPA groups are here too. The players have been divided in three groups over two play days, and only players missing from KeSPA are sc2_terranFantasy and sc2_protossJangBi, but don't worry, they are seeded directly in to the tournament due to reaching the finals of tving OSL 2012, the last Brood War OSL ever.

Six players will move on (top two from each group) and form the Round of 16 along with the 8 GSL players (sc2_protossOZ, sc2_terranMVP, sc2_zergNestea, sc2_protossPartinG, sc2_zergDRG, sc2_protossSan, sc2_protossMC, sc2_terranMarineKing) and 2 more seeded KeSPA players (the aforementioned sc2_terranFantasy and sc2_protossJangBi).

Here are the groups, along with their schedule.

ctf map pool (42 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 06:46 CDT, 25 July 2012 - iMsg
so with the new map (infinity) making it's way into quakelive, i think ctf map pool should be redone.

think it's finally time to let the old maps go, and also bring back c8 (siberia), since it got undeservedly dropped imo.

what i'm thinking of for csn's next ctf thing (league starting in september) is something along these lines:

japanesecastles, siberia/reflux, infinity, ironworks, spidercrossings

i'd even drop spiders tbh, think it's time to let the old maps finally die and possibly bring back c10 (courtyard). seeing how it was completely reworked and is nothing like the old bunk-in-base fest, maybe it should also be given a shot and have a pool of something like this:

p1, siberia/reflux, infinity, c7, c10.

i'd only keep p1 cause atm it's the only map in ql that most teams can evenly play on.

as far as my reflux vote, now that the map has been fixed and is free of fps drops, and with ra spawning every 60 seconds, i think that bs runner can't be ridiculously stacked anymore and that it's worth a try.

opinions?

edit: i'm aware that this forum is mostly filled with osptards, and that reasonable people are in minority, but look at where all this 3w crap got us, 12 years later, same maps, ctf totally dead.

csn looking for tdm admins (No comments)
Posted by esdf @ 09:56 CDT, 22 July 2012 - iMsg
hey guys, since I really don't feel like spamming the irc in hopes of someone getting the message in between qnet glining me for abuse, I've decided to post here.

Basically, we at CSN are planning to do something tdm starting from september, and we'd need a couple of people from tdm scene to come and help us organise/admin things for the tdm crowd.

I would like to add that this post is intended only for EU. our hq is on quakenet, channel #csn.ql, so you can come there and talk to me (esdf) or any other CSN admins (steve, pyton, etc). if that's too much of a bother, you can always leave me an imsg here on esr.

people we're interested in should be motivated and enthusiastic about quake. it'd also be nice if you have some experience with admining in the past.

QuakeCon 2012 BYOC Experience (48 comments)
Posted by esdf @ 08:04 CDT, 21 July 2012 - iMsg
Dear Quake fans and those that just love to game, the Cyber Sports Network is proud announce that we will be running events and raffles during QuakeCon 2012 BYOC. Much like last year, CSN will host tournaments, raffles, giveaways and show matches and hand out over $20,000 in cash and prizes. Along with plenty of BYOC Quake Live action of various mods, including PQL, FFA and Domination, CSN will host various events for some of the top RTS, MOBA and FPS game titles.

For this to all happen, CSN will need your help. For the last 2 years, CSN has been proud to be only major gaming organization to continue to support Quake and other FPS game titles in North America and the QuakeCon BYOC is the mecca of FPS LAN parties.

The Cyber Sports Network has started a kickstarter fundraising program to help organize this experience. All donations to this program will go directly to the BYOC! Even a single donation of $1 will help. For CSN to cover the cost of this experience, the entire project must be funded. CSN is asking for all of those Quakers that appreciate the contribution made to the community consider donating.
