As christmas approaches over here, Im considering upgrading my pc so i have something entertaining for the holiday break, and a venerable pc for next years gaming.

Heres what I got a quote for today -

4400+ Athlon 64 X2
DFI Lanparty UT nF4 SLI-DR
2x 512mb DDR3200 kingmax (pc400)
WD 74gb 10k RPM SATA HDD
XFX GeForce 7800GTX 256mb PCI-E (sli capable)
Pioneer 110DVKSW Dual Layer DVD/RW
ANTEC truepower 2.0 550w PSU
AUDIGY 2 ZS (base package)
(im supplying my lian-li PC70 for the build)

this all totals around $3000 AUD.... sorry if you have no idea what my currency is worth.

Anybody agree/disagree with the hardware choices? Im hoping it will last me around 2 years.

Another thing worth noting is the 7800GTX is out of production in early 06. So perhaps now isnt the right time to buy?

I think the 4400 is too much. It's currently the 3rd faster cpu of the normal AMD line and as such it's priced waaaaay higher than what it's worth. When a new cpu comes out (5000+?) it will drop by at least a 100 quid. Hell the 4200 costs 70 quid less right now! Plus the dual cores have yet to show any advantage in gaming. I think the sensible choice would be a single core 4000+ (almost �120 cheaper and similar/better performance in all current games).

i have adjusted the quote, gone with the 4200 X2 instead, which is suprisingly about $120AUD cheaper!

as a result we were able to change the sound card to a

X-Fi Music version
also

2x 1gb DDR400 Kingmax!

remember nforce4 chipset only supports DDR400 or lower, and I dont want to go intel!

as far as i know that "DDR550" or PC4400 ram is simply for people who are overclocking their front side bus.

Its simply memory rated at a higher bus speed.

I wont be overclocking because my system will be under warranty.

the lower the CAS latency the better for overclocking apparently.

(you might already know this stuff, but i found the last few lines applicable)

again, not exactly something everyone needs to consider, but i have heard that corsair memory is quite rock solid when overclocking.

if you are buying via the web then i'd guess you'd have no trouble (compatibility or performance wise) with any of the nice brands youve mentioned here.

No, usually high bandwidth modules which are good for overclocking have higher latency. Low latency comes from the memory timings that are used and is always desirable, o/c or not. However, high bandwidth modules sacrifice some of the more aggressive timings to achieve higher throughput. It's the classic trade-off of high perfomance memory.

i bought an original xbox, which to be honest off the shelf was very boring, but with a larger hard drive and a mod chip i dont think ive ever owned such a capable console!

Lifetime warranty means, it's stands until they take the product out of the production line e.g. they don't sell it anymore. It has nothing to do with you being able to replace the RAM in 40 years from now :).
