Given the state of the game and the amount of time players could realistically spend on it, in a motivated, fun manner, probably the most idiotic quake tournament format ever.

They weren't forced to do anything. Other than MD & AVG most teams focused on 1 gametype. Then 1 player in each team practiced a bit of 1v1

While a 5-2-1 breakdown might have been better you'd still have people moaning about chance walking away with $$

I liked the way the games played out as a spectator, but it was definitely hard on the teams. Given that they were only allowed to run one Quake tournament this year, it was a pretty good outcome.

Dude, what Latrommi writes there is basically an account of constant frustration, before the tournament had even started. And heroic yet desperate attempts at overcoming it. It makes me weep, and want to ask for forgiveness.

Just look at those pics. Those formerly noble features of our beloved cooller, there a shadow of his former self. Jetlagged. Frustrated. Desperately trying to stomach that crappy american food they had to buy out of their own pockets, at forbidding exchange rates.

It's devastating, my friend. And makes me deeply regret to have ever encouraged any of those admirably brave players - in the wake of another round of contrived qcon "hype" - to leave the nurturing soil of their home countries and submit themselves to a vast array of blatant abuse. I said it was hard on the teams. Jetlag and buying crappy food is just part of going overseas for a LAN at the last minute though, right? It's not like the format made that happen. I think I might be taking your post too seriously, but I honestly can't tell.

Anyway, the alternative was to have duel only. It's sad, but this is literally the best format we could have hoped for this year.

The format was bad, obviously. People going on barely scraped together donations and sponsorship can simply not afford to not practice for each discipline of a "triathlon". That's one point.

The next is that, with increasingly tighter budgets, even to be shared now among a whole team, conditions become increasingly tough. Shorter stay times. Running around to find cheap diners (see latrommi). Etcetera.

Then, with many of the high skill players having a job, some of them family, it's pretty pointless to have them prepare for games they don't usually play. It's counterproductive and stupid.

Prize money distribution we don't need to talk about I guess.

To me, even more so than the usual qcon wtf experience, this was more of a charade than an only halfway meaningful competition. Maybe good for the dumb shows, but otherwise rather depressing.

After reading this whole thread, i really feel bad for them, i would totally NOT mind if they took the money for them self, and stayed home. But that is stupid and its just a reaction to the shitty conditions they were subjected to (and its same every year)

The show is the BYOC LAN and the showcase of new Zenimax games and overall other products, but not Quake

In other words, 99.9% of people attending don't watch the Quake matches before the grand final. The Quake tournament is hosted at a different place than where the LAN and overall event is; making it practically a different event than Quakecon.

Actually no promo stand and almost no one at the BYOC is playing or showcasing Quake. The event for the Quakecon attendants is precisely those raffles, being half-naked around nerds and whatnot.

Well, if that's the "show" pray explain why they're spending like 40k on the tournament anyway. And spent a LOT more during the heydays of quake. And please don't tell me for altruistic purposes.

I would also say that the higher difference in a cold climate to a hot ambient is better tolerable than the one between a hot climate and a cold ambient. Feels like it to me, at least.

Also, I was in US on multiple occasions, and I can confirm, their AC policy is absurd, and it's not just texas, i went to our office in Boston, and got really cold every day in our office and in our AirBNB apt.

If you turn AC off, it gets hot in 15 minutes, but when you turn it on, it starts blowing ice cold air from giant holes in the wall, making the whole room cold in 2 min.
It was a hell to sleep. Btw, the building was brand new.
