Not clicking that.

LAN finals should be played with both players inside a boxing ring.

it's sad when a playerbase driven by autism (for what is essentialy a party game) is bigger than all Quakes combined x 100

SSBM is part of the holy trinity of competitive games (the other two being Brood War and Quake). The skill ceiling is beyond insane and it is the one and only game I ever found more fun to play at a high level than I do Quake.

What? Not at all. If there's such a thing as a golden trinity of nerd sports it has to be SCBW, Q3 and CS.

Melee doesn't belong in a list with competitive games of a different era altogether. Melee is a game from late 2001 that had very little competition until 2007, with its very first appearance at evo, so it completely missed the CPL, ESWC, WCG, EVO, etc. 'golden days'. Also its 'major' only began in 2009 and back then it was quite small, so really it missed everything.

Melee doesn't belong in a 'holy trinity' of fighting games either. In that there's only Marvel 2, Super Turbo and Third Strike.

Apples and oranges. You might as well ask: why is Minecraft more popular than QuakeLive. Or why do more people play chess than they play QuakeLive (or Smash) or whatever. Etc.

Or in other words: you could make the same (bad) argument about a ton of other games other than QuakeLive.

Just saying: the Smash community is positive, the QuakeLive community is negative is not a convincing argument at all to explain the so called "success" of Smash.

And btw, you claim that: "Everyone knows Smash."
I very highly doubt that.

Dunno how it's like where you are, but judging by casual conversations I've had with people here in Sweden more people know Smash than Quake. The Quake crowd is no longer young after all.

I would like to see a poll taken from a large enough sample of random gamers, else we're just pointlessly comparing anecdotal evidence.

If it were possible to play ql on lan at the same costs of smash (couple old tvs and gamecubes), there would be many more events, thus more competition, more face to face contact and more exposure, which perhaps would change the climate in the community. But with the current bureaucratic obstacles for a ql lan there's no chance for that.

Yes.

Also the article mentions Smash didn't get support from the developer, but they don't need support from the developer to run things.

In QuakeLive without support from the developer there isn't even a game to play (no game servers, game browser etc.) If the devs make a change in the game we have to accept it or just play another game. Even for lan events the developers need to give lan servers, which has caused problems in the past when they didn't come through and they had to play online at a lan event.
