Also you don't really need the "minutes" unless you're timing quad / mega with 2 mins and that addition is just too easy. :p

But people overcomplicate timing like mad.
During regular play (say around 2000 - 2200 elo) I can have fun matches while I'm not timing at all. And if I want to win I just remember the second of the time that I last took the items.
Aka if I take an item on X:43 I'll just remember the 3. (actually I remember the offset of the 3 as well like it was more towards 43 than towards 44 but still quite a bit after 43 (so the "real time" should be around 43.35).
That way the next time the item will be up at something which has the form of X:Y8.35.

The rest is just remembering (and or controling!) in which order they will respawn. <-- takes MUCH more skill.

Good timing has very little to do with the actual action of remembering times though.

Also you can have extremely accurate "guesses" of when items spawn if you just know how many actions you can do in between pickups.

Maybe I should start giving quake lessons hehe :p

imo timing to the second is important only when ur out of control, dunno how you see it.

It is as important out of control and in control...
Because the times at which items spawn usually heavily influences the opponents choices.

You as a player are interrested in which choices he has and which he will make and what the merrits and downfalls of those choices are. And you must then base your own decisions on what you expect the opponent actions to be.

The only games in which timing is of lesser importance is vs people who play more possition based (or just have crap timing themselves).

btw taking and timing an item are 2 completely different things.

Also it's a myth that you need to "see/hear an item pickup" in order to have timing on it. Because there are so many more ways to "get a timing" on an item if your overall sense of the game is good enough.

if it's important when you are out of control then it's important when you are in control to counter it.

I have a great idea for a Quake Live Item Practice game but I don't have the skills required to program it. We all know doing the mental math isn't hard, however remembering 2+ times while multitasking (dodging, predicting the opponent, setting up traps and choosing routes, etc) is where the real challenge lies.

How about a timing game where you have to do other stuff? I was thinking about making a 2d game with a sprite that moves around. You have to dodge bouncing bullets, and on the right of the game screen window you have arrows going up that you have to hit on the proper timing (google stepmania if you don't know what I'm talking about).

The scoring could be a combination of the delay between item spawn time and pick up times, the number of time the player sprite gets hit by the bouncing balls and the result of the "stepmania" game. To make the game complete, make it so you have to press spacebar on an item to pick it up, to allow the skilled players to delay the items and prevent simultaneous spawn times of armors and MH. Obviously, sitting on a spawned item while delaying it wouldn't count as a score penalty.

I'd play the shit out of such a game, and it would be 50x more useful than the current implementation of the "timing practice games".

dude it's not worth it. Doing those addictions while playing is very different from that by my experience, because you have to spread your focus on 100 more things (item cycle, enemy's stack, enemy's weaponery, enemy's positions, ammos, aiming, dodging, moving, position, being sneaky and so on)

.. which is all the more reason to try and make timing one less thing for your brain to become strained on, and instead have it as second nature, right?

it didn't worked like that for me.+25 and 35 addictions are eZ and immediate once you are in highschool lol, the point is: just train it ingame because it's different there.

getting better is evolution not revolution.

if u start doing all the things qwih mentioned, you will get overwhelmed.

start timing (1,2,3,4 items, then add hp bubbles). when ur able to time, start using this knowledge, to get best possible position. after that you should be able to make kills. when you make kills -> get better at weapon control. if u can control weapons, and do all the stuff mentioned earlier - go for crazy reads.


or, if u have good aim, play like cypher since the start

i got good aim but i lose every single match, what u mean with "playing like cypher"

taking positions from which you can deal easy outdamage your opponent, and doing a lot of micro pushes.


however its not easy to play like him, cause you need to read stacks perfectly to know when you have to back away, or push for the kill.

protip: good aim is worthless if u cant dodge
