I watched 480p last week and it was ok. I play @ 640x480 picmip 5. 480p stream looks beautiful.

yeah, and even on 640x480 picmip 5 the game looks better than the 720p over at faceit. i remember quite a few people would rather watch the russians stream only because faceit one was too laggy

I just want to say that I prefer picmip 0. Even when I rarely get lags and I'm forced to watch 480p - this is the price I'm willing to pay for picmip 0 720p stream for the rest of time.
480p Is good enough to see what's going on - just like 480p picmip 8.

yeah, but u dont need brightskin or forced enemy model to see whats going on either, or any of the numberous other commands everyone use to improve their game. its not about meeting minimum requirements. at least to me the game has never been about that, but instead adjusting it to get maximum quality.

I do. You can easily miss what happened in fast encounter without brightskin. Default skins are often dark, thin and blend in with the map.

I don't tweak my config to get "maximum quality" but to maximize my performance. picmip 5 makes estimating velocity and position easier in certain situations.

On the other hand when I watch stream I enjoy some eyecandy and whole spectacle while being perfectly able to see what's going on.

If you want to have the best analytical experience then demos are the way to go.

so brightskins are necessary for vision, but the environment blending in with itself is nothing? cmon now, if ur gonna use that as an argument, at least be fair. also, dont you get names over the opponents head while speccing?

doesnt have to be one or the other in most cases =) you can still use post process and even bloom while still getting full performance. when you're referring to eyecandy, u cant claim 480p look even so much as decent. we both know its a pixelated nightmare.

Environment isn't blending with current brightskins. There are good players playing with picmip 0 (ins comes to my mind). I'd try it too if it wasn't for my netbook's intel graphics card.

480p is good enough for following the game. It's the opposite of eyecandy just like r_picmip 8. If I was forced to watch 480p all the time I'd prefer high picmip but there aren't so many ppl with such problems anymore I believe.

240p is enough to follow the game, but it still looks like absolute dogshit. im able to watch it in 720p, and even 720p+ with low framerate but neither option looks good.

240p, 480p are fallback modes for ppl who have problems with twitch.tv. afaik there are not that many of them (way less than with own3d judging whine intensity on stream chats and esr). You don't require fallback mode to be eyecandy - you just want to be able to follow the game. 480p high picmip isn't beautiful too.

If 720p+ picmip 0 doesn't look good enough to you then probably anything but high picmip wont look good to you or you are video clarity perfectionist. If first case is true then be more flexible. Low picmip for sure looks better to newcomers and we need them. In second case - you are in minority.

I prefer low picmip stream. Many viewers prefer low picmip. They voiced their opinion on esr and other places - this is why streamers switched. Casual spectators @ lans and newcomers. I just don't ridicule like you do. I'm not saying that high picmip is unwatchable. 480p was a standard for analog tv few years ago.

just give it a rest, guy. making a 10 year old game appeal to new comers isnt gonna happen, and quake isnt ever gonna compete with other fps's with the casual crowd. anyone without major fps experience is never gonna get casually better at quake, not by todays standards. sure, the casual view might appriciate eyecandy stream more, but as it is a problem for a few and the current quakelive audience doesnt give a shit either way (except those with problems), i really dont see a good reason to continue using it.

have picmip 16 actually stopped you from watching a stream? i have chosen other options even when im shitbored, just because if i dont care about the outcome, i dont watch it. i dont find it amusing looking at a shit quality stream, and thats not to say im a "video clarity perfectionist" as you put it. just dont sacrifice image quality for some eyecandy that are rendered useless to anyone who cant maximize the settings.

They are not useless. I watched friday's faceit level 10 cup in 480p. No complains.
Many ppl had problems with own3d streaming including me and I use mplayer instead of their flash player.

Have you ever showed anyone high picmip quake? The first reaction always is: wtf is this ugly thing on my monitor? It's not about appealing, it's about not scarring away.

I had no fps experience before ql and yet I'm here. Dunno if I got "casually better" but I'm part of community and I started by watching streams. You need big community otherwise nothing is happening and it gets dead boring - I experienced this myself.
Part of current ql audience gives a shit about picmip as can be seen by many comments that eventually led to current situation.

Strenx plays Quake and SM at a professional level, but does not have a professional Attitude. Marketability is where the real $ is at and frankly I can't cheer for him because he reminds me of the kid that packs up his computer and leaves the lan party in the middle because he lost a couple games. (everyone remembers at least one of them) We're all watching closely! We all know when there is lag and the Casters always mention it for us, unbind your chat button and respawn!

I don't need to cheer for him. The scene can't only have nice guys - it would be fucking boring. If strenx wouldn't whine, what would distinguish him from evil? Personalities matter: they bring rivalries, ego wars and drama - believe it or not, but these things are important. Good luck trying to sell a stale community.

I don't find strenx's style the most interesting to watch, but I just watch him play to see him lose - he makes a good villain.

+ on the note of his own PR. He has the skills that allow him to do what he wants, in this case play a certain antagonist role.

Unless strenx starts meditating with tibetan monks, he will allways annoy people and whine to avoid the dented ego. His way is to bolster up his chances by kidology, keep his opponent and possibly himself out of the reality that he is quite out playable. He cant afford to give anything away. Guys ok just thinks he is and wants everyone else to think he is superman.

I'm pretty sure the monks would prefer self-immolation over having strenx in the vicinity of their abode.

Pavel defense and his prediction shots are so good. This guy has great skills and RIGHT NOW may be considered the best QL all arounder. He's not only a very very good dueler, he's one of the very best active TDMers too.

First things first:
7 users complained about lag in this thread.
1200 people were watching the stream.
That's 0.6 %.
We simply do not have enough objective data to make a meaningful statement on how many people were experiencing lag.

If it really is twitch I would think it should be lagging for everybody and it's not lagging for everybody, it works just fine for a lot of people.
Some people report it works fine if they switch browsers for example. Go figure!

More from reading around on the internet: some ISP's throttle certain traffic or sites. I have read that Comcast throttles twitch.tv for example.
Some providers simply have routing issues. (Unfortunately when calling an ISP help desk you can only get a random grunt who has no access to that sort of information and will just give you the "company line". Stuff like routing issues have to be escalated to higher levels of the ISP's hierarchy.)

How close you are to a twitch data center might also matter.

A big megabit number on your subscription does not necessarily mean it's also a good line (especially for adsl). And from personal experience with a cable provider: you can have fantastic speeds and pings but tons of packet loss for example (it's fine for me now).

Maybe IT IS twitch. At least I have given some argumentation on why it could also be something else.
