I think you're looking at the situation the wrong way. We don't care about NK. We care about NK attacking SK mainly, and the effects it would have on China and everyone else in the region. Not because we 'love' them but because our economies are intertwined (especially China).

I do hope they can find a peaceful solution though.

China/Japan/South Korea taking care of North Korea would probably be far better for the region than US vessels coming into Asian waters and destabilizing the already tense relations between China and the US.

On another note: I do believe that NK military power is far lesser than what some analysts say or their megalomaniac leader is trying to convince their people.

The west cares about conflict with NK for 3 reasons:

- If a conflict starts, Kim Jong-Il is just crazy enough to retaliate with nukes. That's bad for everyone.

- World economy is partly relying on SK's ability to stay afloat. If they're severely hampered in any respect economically or their economy collapses we're all going to be in a bigger world of hurt than we are now.

- We love playing referee anytime we can because we're retarded douchebags like that.

We're not trying to get everyone to "live happily ever after", we're trying to get everyone NOT killed. I'd love to go in and just wipe NK off the face of the earth or just remove Kim Jong-Il from his position of power along with his government and just reunite NK with SK so they can all be happy and shite, but that won't ever happen without serious repercussions that outweigh the pros. The US did it in Iraq and ended up hurting us more than we've helped (kinda saw that coming myself, but De Dee Dee dubya apparently thought it was a good idea) and honestly I'm not one for repeating bad history. Does the situation suck? Hell yeah. The outcome will effect quite a few people and that's why everyone is so interested.

I think what they've done lately is only going to hurt their ability to get food and oil. The real key here is what china does though.

the only reason nk still exists is china. they control everything that nk receives and if they pulled the plug millions would starve to death and their military would have no fuel, thus rendering them useless.
